My sister and her 2 years old, my 3 years old, and my mom were charged with tea/water and seating fee that we had questions on, which including 2 kids were charged too, we got nasty attitude in return and were told 1 seat per charge, 1 water per fee including kids. When we asked to speak to the manager, we were ignored by the manager and got no response. When we want their names, we were refused. So We refused to pay for service charges of 15 %, which was included in the bill,so we deducted the fee from the bill. As a result, we were followed outside of the restaurant and demanded by the manager and 2 waiters and threatened to collect the service charge or we could not leave the property. We ended up paying the balance for the service charges, because our husbands were not with us at that time, and we were trying to comfort and calm our kids down because they were frightened and wanted to stay away from those big persons. We told the manager we will never return for food, and the manager replied with hope you will never come back and dont want to see us again.
Yes Flexy2011, make sure never again!!
dining experience – This place ended one of the most horrendous dinners of my life (too bad no zero stars).
First, their food honestly pretty tasty. Their chicken soup is slow-cooked in the traditional Cantonese style and warms the soul. Their specialty whole chicken dish is juicy and flavorful, unlike other Chinese restaurants. Stir fried lobster is a bit dry but otherwise delicious. Snails (if you're into these) are cleaned thoroughly (no sand!) and savory. Peking style pork remains moist but unsoggy even if sitting on the table for the entire duration of the meal, which can't be said of many other Chinese places. If this review was solely based on food, I would rate East Manor 3/5 stars.
The service, however, is ridiculous.
Yes, most Chinese restaurants are notorious for bad service: the long wait for tables during busy hours, inattentive waiter, slow and overburdened kitchen, missed/incorrect orders, the million years it takes for the bill, ... and the list goes on. These levels of inadequacy I was entirely prepared for. These things are not the reason for this poor review, however.
After examining the bill that took 30 minutes to arrive, I discovered that East Manor TAXES THEIR INCLUDED 15% SERVICE CHARGE. I hoped this to be an honest mistake and politely inquired with one of the floor manager. To my surprise, the manager curtly states that this is and has been restaurant policy, and we have to report the tax to the state (as if i have never heard of taxes before). First time encountering this and pretty sure that this is highly illegal, I offered the manager another chance and once again asked if he was sure the bill was correct. The manager condesendingly responds that "it's like this everywhere, I would know." I promptly recalculated the subtotal and tax according to the bill and did not pay a dime of service fee, which I felt i was entitled due to the circumstances. This resulted in the manager insulting my entire party in front of other customers, calling us "cheap"and "never to come back again."
He doesn't have to tell me twice.
Discrimination? Refusal to serve non-Asian costumers?!? – Wanting to try something new, we decided to go to Flushing for Chinese. Having read a decent Zagat review of this restaurant, my friend suggested this place. When we walked into the restaurant, we noted that it must be very authentic, as we didn't see any non-Asian diners. Upon requesting a table, my friend was told, "No, no table. We're very busy tonight." Then, the hostess shot her fellow host a look & he mumbled something to her looking at us like we were aliens. I've never been to a restaurant that didn't even offer a time frame to get a table and the way we were treated was as if we were being refused service. I will never try to go back to this restaurant, as we truly felt like we were discriminated against.
