SAVE YOUR MONEY...and your hair!!!!!!! – I bought a Groupon for any hair service at Gro. I have never been disappointed at other salon Groupons, and this had more good reviews than bad, so I figured this would work out, and hopefully get a permanent colorist out of this. Boy, was I wrong in all levels!!!
1. When they called the day before to supposedly confirm my appointment, they asked me to come in an hour earlier b/c they double booked. I agreed, and went to my appointment an hour earlier. (It would have been nice to have been called earlier, instead of the night before)
2. I had to wait an HOUR until the receptionist sat me.
3. After seating me, the receptionist told me I have to wait another 30 minutes until I could be seen by a stylist. So I waited (only because they didn't have any other availability for another 2 weeks)
4. My colorist kept talking to me about salon gossip, including a stylist at Gro who is an alcoholic, and who gets drunk while styling people's hair. (Call me crazy, but isn't that unprofessional??)
5. My shampoo lady told me that she doesn't know how to style, so she can't style my hair after blow drying. (How do you not know how to style hair if you work at a salon??) She then asks me what products would be good for my hair that they offer at the salon. I didn't know that answer b/c I've never used their products before, and also b/c I'M NOT THE STYLIST. So then she guesses (I know she was guessing b/c she had a puzzled look at all of the products, and said, "ehh, this looks like it will work" at the products she choose for me).
6. My hair looks a lot lighter at the top, than at the bottom, but my colorist told me that it will look lighter once I'm outside in the sun and my hair completely dries. So, I didn't make a big fuss about it.
7. I had to wait AGAIN 20 minutes for the receptionist to come back to her desk, so I can pay. My colorist had to come to the front desk and check me out
8. I wake up the next day, and my hair has THREE DIFFERENT TONES (blonde at the top, ash brown in the middle, pitch black at the bottom). The bottom is darker than it was before I got it dyed.
I called days later complaining about my experience, and the receptionist hung up on me TWICE.
I finally got a hold of the owner (who was apparently my colorist...the gossip queen who gave me 3 tones) and she got upset with me because I couldn't go to the salon that day to fix it (sorry I have a full-time job). She then continues to argue with me about my complaints, then tells me, "We're busy this week, so do you want me to fix your hair today or not? Because if not, then I really don't have time for this". I told her No, b/c I'm working, so then she hangs up on me
Needless to say, nothing got resolved, and I am still 3-toned hair girl.
I wish I never got that Groupon...
*****She also told me that my blow dry experience was "complementary" b/c they usually charge people extra to get a blow dry and style if you're only coloring your hair. That was not mentioned at all the day I got my hair done...I don't know a single salon in Chicago that charges extra to get a blow dry after they color it. So, if you're cool with leaving the salon with wet hair, then this is the place for you!******
great haircut – Found Gro Salon on an apprentice site and decided to try them out. Ronnie did a fantastic job! I ended up seeing my stylist from NY when her was in and he loved my hair. I would let Ronnie do my hair anytime. Nice guy, spoke to me the night before, did some homework and looked up a few styles like we spoke about. This is also the first time my husband has ever kept saying "I lOVE YOUR HAIR" :)
Nightmare haircut – I received a haircut from Nikki. She shagged my very full, very wavy hair and it's a nightmare now with so many pieces and so many lengths. It looks huge and unruly. Now there is no hair weighing the wave down since she cut it about 3 inches. Then when I told her I was unhappy she explained that that's just my hair. My hair didn't look like that before I went in; it was long and not shaggy. I feel like crying and hiding the cut is so horrible. I've tried clips and all sorts of hair styles to no avail. I will be stuck wearing either a wig or an extension thanks to nikki. Not that this matters, but she seemed way more interested in talking to her fellow co-workers than paying attention to my hair needs.
Salon Review - February – I review salons in Chicago for a national fashion publication. February's assignment was GRO. I was able to book a last minute appointment for a cut with Michael Davis. I arrived about 10 minutes early and Michael was ready for me. After a comprehensive conversation regarding my preferrences, I walked out with one of the most remarkable cuts I have had in 2 years of being the Salon Snoop. This salon is THE place to go if you are in Chicago. Funky, fun, quirky atmosphere with the most talented group of stylists I have encountered yet!
Awesome People! Fantastic Hair! – I love this salon! Michael found me on the side of the street, asked me to do a hair show and I never looked back! Judith is the best at color and between the two of them, I always feel like family when I walk in!
I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new salon, after one visit you will walk away feeling like you belong in an episode of Cheers, where everyone knows your name! They never disappoint!
Amazing color by Shayna! – For years I have been going to the same stylist in Lincoln Park, but last month I wasn?t able to see my stylist due to major scheduling conflicts so I went to GRO, a cute trendy salon in Wicker Park. Never in my life have I received more compliments on my hair color then last month when I got it highlighted by Shayna The next day I felt like a super model as numerous people commented on how good it looked. Shayna didn?t do anything drastically different from my previous color job, but the consistency and natural balance of the colors was perfect. I returned to my original stylist for a cut only and even he raved about what a great job she did. Since then I have referred many of my friends to visit Shayna and all have thanked me profusely for introducing them to her. Personally I will continue coming to GRO to get my color done and returning to my regular salon for my cut. The prices are reasonable and the salon is super cute and has a very friendly and talented staff. So if you want an amazing color job in a comfortable environment by a kind, talented, funny colorist, go see Shayna at GRO!
Judith Knows Her Blondes!! – I stopped going to Salon Buzz (way, way overpriced, super snobby staff) and was referred to Gro from a friend is very happy with her haircuts from Nicky. However, I was looking for blonde highlights and was booked with one of their colorists, Judith.
I have long, fine light brown hair and Judith brought out beautiful multi-layers blonde highlights that literally garner regular compliments from stangers on the street.
I typically go in for a 1/2 head and have never been pushed to do the whole head.
She quickly applies MILLIONS of subtle foil layers (more than I've ever had) so I don't walk out with blonde chunks that look even worse as they grow out. When it gets a bit too light, she folds in some caramel. Judith is friendly, pleasantly low-key and takes my cue when I want to bow out of conversation and read or work on the computer.
The other staff members are friendly and relaxed.
The prices are decent. I think with tips for Judith and the shampooer, I think I typically walk out paying about $140 for the best blonde I've ever had that lasts about 10 weeks.
Gro Salon- gorgeous cuts and color with a little sass – I have been going to Gro Salon for sometime now and can't say enough about how awesome the salon is. Everyone I come into contact there from reception to shampoo is great. The attitude and decorum is rebellious and stylish. In contrast to usual punk rock condescension, the crew at Gro are way down to earth, approachable, and amicable.
I am always greeted by name from the minute I walk in the door. Both my colorist (Judith) and stylist are amazing and are able to translate my inarticulate hair -speak into a style and shade that is exactly what I wanted, but couldn't express. Judith pushes my limits to the perfect degree; I always leave feeling very comfortable with my hair and still very "me", but with a slight edginess. She's is super helpful with suggestions when I want a slight change & with talking me through each step of the cut and color.
And as an added bonus, Judith is one of the sunniest and happiest people that I know. She's always smiling, and laughing as she bustles about the salon mixing color, and weaving mysterious goop in between foils on my head. She' s also a fantastic story teller, making the time in the chair fly by.
And I love Esther who manages the salon; she has a fantastically dry sense of humor! And best of all, she's incredibly efficient and always gets me in when I need it most. Esther has helped me out of last minute hair emergencies on several occasions.
I could go on and on about how great the salon is; but bottom line - I love 'em at Gro. They serve up a little punk rock attitude with a genuine smile and refined skill-- a rariety in homogeonous Bucktown.
Expensive arrogance – I went in as a new client. I was referred by a friend, but could not get an appointment with Gro, herself, so went with the colorist and stylist who had the greatest number of positive reviews on this site.
I will give them credit for taking time to meet with me beforehand to discuss my preferences and needs. However, they only played lip-service to what I had to day. If I said it once, I said it at least five times ... "I do not want a brown football helmet haircut with blonde streaks like every other cookie cutter hair salon cranks out." My hair was half-wet, looked like $$%%, and the stylist was ready to send me out on the street looking like *&^% and then had the nerve to tell me he "doesn't use a blowdryer to straighten and smoothe hair," disappeared, and then sent the colorist to dry my hair.
Short story long ... I now have a brown helmet haircut with blonde streaks that make Hillary Clinton look stylish and attractive. There are brown stains on my pillow cases, collars, and bathtub (please note I have only wetted and conditioned since being there over a week ago). My hair looks like I bent over my garbage disposal and turned it on for ten minutes and the texture is totally shot.
They may talk a good game, but for that price point, be ready to spend an lot of money to let "professionals" wreak havoc on a trusting individual.
Just okay – I had my hair cut by Nikki in August of 2006, and I wasn't impressed. She was standing right behind the receptionist when I checked in and didn't say a word to me. I then sat for 10 minutes while she continued to talk to the receptionist. She wasn't rude once she started cutting my hair, but my first impression remained. My cut wasn't anything exceptional, and she didn't style it. She simply diffused it for a little and was done--she didn't finish with any product or fuss with it the way that all other stylists have. I do not recommend her for curly hair, of for someone looking for an engaging stylist.
