There are two schools of modernism in America: hi-tech and naturalist. Their apexes, respectively, are Alinea and Manresa. Every chef that pays homage to nature with exquisitely composed tributes to natural flavors, composed in harmony, is to some extent drawing from the spring of David Kinch's seminal work at his remote Los Gatos restaurant.
Unique & Superb – If you dine at Manresa, you absolutely have to opt for the Chef's Tasting Menu. Sure, the prices are ridiculously expensive (for hubby and I, the total including tax & tip - WITH NO WINE - about $260) but I challenge you to find another restaurant south of San Francisco that offers the same ingenuity and creativity. As a major foodie, I'd thought I'd seen and tasted it all, but Manresa blew me away with their food pairings.
It's not one of those places you'd frequent regularly (dinner was longer than 3 hours), but it's definitely a restaurant you'd visit at least once a year just to experience the chef pushing his culinary genius even further.
Lacks the thrill for the prices. There's nothing california or french or spanish about this restaurant - more like oriental. Too many fried/deep fried items on the prix fixe menu - which is the only way to order food here. The fish was over-cooked and dry but the between course fillers were interesting such as:strawberry gazpacho, parmesan churro, egg shell something and petit fours.
The interior can use more lighting options.
I Really Like Manresa – I dont surf, but I always feel exhilarated after going to Manresa, like having just caught the best wave of the day and riding it in. I have been to Manresa three times, and it is always thrilling to eat there. When I go to Manresa, I put myself in the hands of Chef David Kinch and order his Chefs Tasting Menu with the wine pairing. The Chefs Tasting Menu is ten courses that Kinch cooks for you. I surrender myself to Kinchs creativity and skill, and I am always amazed at how good the food is. There is nothing pretentious about Manresa, just stellar service and delicious food. Plus, the town of Los Gatos is a great place to visit. As you can tell, I like this place a lot, and I can see why it was voted Worlds 50 Best Restaurants.
Unique – 3 hrs for dinner, is the only negative thing. Food is prepared upon ordering so expect to wait 45 min between items. Expect 80.00 - 100.00 per person w/ grat. Plenty of staff.
If they had a view or coastal location one would understand. Small portions so charish evey bite.
FANTASTIC – My husband and I went here for Valentine's day and it was great. Service is perfect- attentive without being obnoxious, each entree was presented and taken away at the perfect time. Food was delicious. Each dish had contrasting flavors, which made for a unique and memorable dinner. Ambiance was perfect- casual, but elegant. The restaurant was completely full, but still maintained a level of quiet; perfect for an intimate conversation. I recommend sitting near the fireplace.
Expensive, but great – I'd heard some bad things - particularly in the service and price arenas - but my husband was dying to go. We had a wonderful time. We opted for the chef's tasting menu, which brought us many "small bites," many of which were items we would never think to order. The waiter asked if there was anything we wouldn't eat, but otherwise just brought food out and then told us what we were tasting. All was wonderful, and the service was impeccable. All said, GREAT food and service, but very much on the pricey side... dinner for two was over $300. One of those special occasion restaurants.
South Bay Star – Arguably the best chef in the South Bay today, David Kinch is busy weaving a tapestry of tastes and textures at his slick and hip Los Gatos eatery. Totally remodeled from its Village House days, Manresa treats the adventuresome diner to an experience unparalled anywhere south of Yountville. Front of the house partner Aimee Hebert and staff work hard to welcome and pamper. Wine list is unique and a tad ecclectic...which matches chef Kinch's vision perfectly. Don't miss pastry chef Irit Ishai's fabulous desserts.
