Acme Apartment Mismanagement Corruption, Inc. – I have rented at a complex that is in

Alexandria, VA (Arlandria Chiralagua Housing Cooperative) and is managed by the above property management company. It is an small island amongst a mostly beautiful City, Alexandria in the suburbs of Washington, D,C. The complex is a supposedly a Cooperative, but also accepts about 15 section 8 tenants. The complex is a amalgam of poorly constructed three story garden style apartments that have the appearance of a small third world prison. The only good thing about this place is that it is near the better part of Alexandria, VA near Del Ray. When you think you will crack living there, you can escape from the place you can walk the next block over into civilization. The problem with this complex is the unprofessional, property mnagement company, who refuses to fix or maintain anything on the property The heating and cooling systems are woefully outdated, the appliances are old and often broken, etc. The City officials all know it by "That Place" before you even mention the name. The management could care less about the property or the tenants. The do not enforce any of the lease or Coop rules at all, but have no problem enforcing the rules regarding fees and rents due. Starting at $1034 per month plus water, heat and electric! Twenty people can live in a one bedroom and....We have Roaches, mice, rats, booming, subwoofer mostly Latin nightclub music on every floor, walls that listen. For example, I hear the guy under me coughing and snoring! No kidding! The floors and walls appear to be built of tin foil, the heating system is gerry rigged, garbage is always in the hallways and grounds, there is unsafe lighting around the complex, the walls are dirty and graffiti filled in the entrances, the maintenance is shoddy there is no security, no laundramat, no swimming Pool, no sanity, sex offender tenants, violent drug busts, rude, nasty and loud neighbors who wash their cars in the parking lot and blast music, so it shakes your entire apartment. I have had to call the cops over twenty times regarding music. When you come home, there is usually a couple of scraggly looking, cross eyed dudes drinking on the steps. Everthing is loud here! LOUD, the kids, the parents, the older people, even the rodents. My Cat sleeps in my bed and one night I awoke to this loud scratching sound and noticed her standing in front of the wall staring. She was waiting for a rat or mouse to enter. If you rent here or think of becoming a member, you must supply yourself with an unreasonable amount of patience, a large pair of noise blocking ear phones, a can of Mace, and the Police departments number on speed dial. It is also good to have have a couple of very thick, heavy rugs.. You will also need a lot of roach spray and a supply of rat poisen. If you do not already have one. If you have any manners and treat your neighbors with respect, you will not survive here. I am living one day at a time and trying to move. I have heard of slums, seen them in the movies, but never have I had a bad rental experience, until I moved here. As I decry this place, I will say a few good things. It does have a nice refrigerator and bathtub, in addition to being near buses and stores. The layout is ok, but my oven does not work, and the manager told me he would evict me for complaining. ( I refer to this as the dictator). There is a Board of Directors that appears to be secretive and operated by a branch of the Mob.

Discrimination – Peninsula has two independant living facilities for mentally ill adults known as Horizon House 1 and Horizon House 2, which are managed by American Apartment Rentals. On Thursday, May 8, my son?s Peninsula case manager informed me that my son had been accepted for admission to Peninsula?s Horizon House 2 in Blount County. An admission meeting was organized for the following morning and I was told that Joel could move in any time afterward. Later the same day, I was informed that my son had suddenly been rejected with no explanation. I phoned American Apartment Management and spoke with Patty Owenby, who was evasive but promised to get to the bottom of it and call me back. That was May 9th and I never heard back from her despite leaving two more phone messages. I also spoke with Dawn White, who manages the two houses for American Apartment Management, and received the same non-commital brush off.

On May 19, I wrote to Mr. Dave Nagel, Director of American Apartment Management, to learn why my son had been denied admission to the Horizon House. I never received an answer to my letter or a response to my telephone messages. I also spoke to the HUD director in Knoxville, to see if he could help since the Horizon Houses are HUD subsidized. He told me that HUD is not responsible for who is admitted or rejected for admission to the Horizon Houses and that it would do no good to hire an attorney. Meanwhile, my son is disabled and desperately needs this service which is being denied him with no explanation. Although by law I am entitled to a letter of explanation and a copy of any documentation regarding my son's rejection, I cannot even get a phone call returned.
