Great Place! – This is the best place in the whole wide world!
LOVED IT – to be totally honest. we just went in to go to the bathroom. but could not resist the aroma.... our favorite was the shrimp and red pepper soup bowl. AMAZING ! i have hunted the web since april 1st (the day we went ate here) to find a recipe that sounds similar. i doubt we will find or make anyrhing in comparison. i don't guess you could send me some??? can i order some???
great breakfast! – i can only speak for the breakfast here, but that alone did it for me. we had a delicious harty breakfast, but it was quite pricy. the decor is fun and the staff was friendly. we went fairly early so there was no wait. its in a great location, just steps from everything! will go back for more breakfast!
Disappointed – The chowder was good, but soup isn't a meal.
After completely blowing the entree, they tried to make up
by offering free dessert......nice try, but rather presumptuous.
The fish and chips were pretty bad. I knew we should
eaten across the street at the Italian place, Choppino's or something.
Average for the area – I used to work in the area it's touristy. With limitations on lunch and as a local, it's difficult to find a place to eat that's not over-priced, this place was the same. The Chowder is ok- particularly crab & corn. Garlic bread could use work and more garlic. The ahi tuna BLT was good, seared perfectly rare (as it should be), though the bread was a bit greasy. Overall, it's an ok place for being in Fisherman's Wharf but I don't think I'll be back in the area any time soon.
great chowder!!! – I can only speak for the chowder...which was phenomenal!! They have a list of eight different chowder..I stuck with the New England clam chowder which was deliciously creamy..not too thick..chock full of ingredients. Next time I will try their California chowder!!!
CHOWDA! – The crab and corn chowder was amazing. The staff wasn't shy about telling us how it won an award at a chowder cook off somewhere back east. They weren't lying. It's the best bowl of soup I've ever experienced. The calmari and popcorn shrimp come with a chunky tartar sauce that has capers in it. YUM!
I stumbled on the Blue Mermaid after wondering around the Wharf with my hungry family with kids. I can't tell you how warm and friendly the staff were. We were all told we had to try the "Award Winning Chowder" ...and it's no joke. It makes my mouth water thinking about it! The kids recieved their kids meal in the most creative way! They are given a "Blue Mermaid Bucket" with their food inside the bucket, and the ketchup for the fries in the sand shovle. They even gave us a clean bucket to take with us. When my friends and family are back in SF I will be sending them their way!!!
A modern take on quintessential waterfront fare tries hard to lure locals to Fisherman's Wharf. – The Scene
Original redwood beams and exposed-brick walls lend the airy dining room some rustic respectability. The otherwise kitschy nautical theme includes boating relics, brightly painted picnic tables and murals of old cannery labels. Waiters clad in sailor stripes are friendly yet inexperienced.
The innovative-sounding menu, with eight riffs on chowder, initially gives the impression that this Fisherman's Wharf restaurant is bravely veering off the beaten path. But the kitchen makes several missteps--less-than-fresh seafood, consistent underseasoning, even serving oysters not properly shucked. Flat California chowder proves watery, while crab-and-corn chowder is oddly sweet. Though the salmon and fennel spin on this classic soup has a rich saffron creaminess, it also exudes a fishy flavor. Even the fried fisherman's platter, though nicely battered, disappoints. Safer choices are the meaty, bacon-wrapped shrimp, which are moist and smoky, and a simple, home-style cioppino.
