Great chicken, everything else borderline – Only go to Malecon for the chicken. The tostones and rice beans were bad and didn't taste very fresh.
I've also heard from people that the service is bad so take out is probably the best option.
Now I Know. – I love Malecon. I moved to the Bronx because of it. There's the original in Yonkers, and I'm thinking of having my 40th birthday there, that's how much I love their Dominican roasted chicken, mojito (marinade) on the side, and plump, glazed sweet plaintains. (Though my dietician said I can't eat there more than once every two weeks.) But today, whilst looking up the number online to order, I saw a reveiw with only two stars. How can this be?!?! I clicked on it, and it was talking about how bad the service was. And there were a couple others talking about bad, unattentive, rude service. Huh? I don't get it. Maybe just a language barrier, that's all. Gentrifiers moving to the neighborhood not patient with English as a second language (heaven forbid). So whatever! I ordered! AND THE GUY WHO ANSWERED THE PHONE WAS NASTY. He was short with me, rude, sounded irritated, and this was after he tried telling me I was out of the delivery range ... before I told him he JUST delivered to me yesterday! This was no communicado thing. This was a guy with A LOT of attitude. Like ... "You seem to be in a bad mood, buddy. Everything okay?" That kind of attitude. (I still ordered though. I'm going to call and complain, but AFTER I get my food. And I'll call from the pay phone downstairs.) BE WARNED!
AVOID at any COST! – I've tried this restaurant on 3 separate occasions; hoping to have a different experience, but unfortunately not. The staff can be summed up in two words: ATTITUDE & NONATTENTIVE! That is until it's time to pay the bill when they literally hover over you to see what kind of tip their substandard service will receive. The food inevitably always arrives luke warm and don't expect a customary check to see if all is fine, until you're almost finished. At this juncture of the meal, what's the point? Keep your attitude, I'm going elsewhere.
Good food, bad service – I was recommended to El Malecon by a friend that raved about the food. The food was decent, but for other reasons I recommend you go with caution (if you go at all). First of all, EVERYTHING anyone in my party requested had to be requested over and over again (water, sides, coffee, packing up food, bill, etc.). Either the waitress could never hear us the first time or she had a bad memory. Nonetheless, we had to keep calling her over to remind her of our requests. And the restaurant was far from busy. The other reason I recommend you go with caution if at all is that after leaving the area, I realized we had been charged about 17% sales tax. This is unacceptable. Good food, but be weary of everything else.
FOR SO-SO FOOD & BAD SERVICE, THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO !!! – I wanted to try an authentic Cuban restaurant in the Bronx and found this place on the internet after reading some positive reviews. They didn't mention that parking was going to be a nightmare and that the food was anything but Cuban! The first negative was when we sat at our table and our waitress was rushing us to give her our orders; we didn't have a chance to look at our menus for more than a minute. After waiting almost an hour for our food, our waitress serves me without my wife's food for which she replies," I'm sorry, we ran out of what you ordered, can you order something else?" To avoid making a bad situation worse, we shared my meal which was mediocre at best and any good Cuban chef would be embarrassed to serve a meal like this. If you're in the area and are REALLY desperate to go here, order it to go.
Otherwise, avoid this place like the plague!
Simiply delicious! – El Malecon has become one of my favorite restaurant in NYC, especially this one. There chicken are fresh and tasty. There rice and beans are amazing. I also recommend there mofongo. Yummy!
