Lose the attitude... – I tried Public twice. The first time I had a great experience. The stylist totally got my hair and I was VERY happy with the end product. However, I did have to deal with the b*tchy male receptionist who gave me grief about showing up ten minutes late for my appointment. If I'm paying you for a service and you're a c*nt to me, then I'm not going to pay you for that service. Usually when I deal with b*tchy personnel at a place like, oh say, an AT&T store or a hair salon, I equate it to bad management. But, like I said, I liked my stylist and I was willing to give it another shot. The second time around is when the s*it splattered all over the fan. Of course, my stylist left or they fired her or whatever, so she wasn't there, so I was stuck with a space cadet who (god knows why) they ever let graduate from beauty school. I have curly hair and I asked if she knew how to cut curly hair. "Oh yes," she said, adding, "It's my specialty." Horse s*it. She kept on cutting more and more off, repeating, "I think your hair should go forward." The end product made me look like a poodle. I had to wear a hat for the next week until I had time to get it cut by someone else. If you don't know how to cut hair, then don't cut hair. But, I fault the establishment that allows inept people to cut hair when that's supposed to be what the establishment is there for. R.I.P. Public. I like your outside aesthetic, but the inside licks butt -- not in a good way. : (

Get your hair did right- by a hot, scissor wielding hair mistress – Jessica Corso is quite possibly the world's best hair stylist. No, I am not exaggerating. I am normally a bit skittish about people doing things to my hair, as I have had many "stylists" ignore my requests and decide what was "best" for me. Jessica listens to your wants/ needs and can execute them to perfection. And if you're not sure what you want, she is very good at gauging what would look best on you. She is a master in her field- she can layer and dye like the stealthiest of ninjas. You actually won't know it's happening until she's finished. That's just how good she is. Plus she's cute, funny and smart, so you won't be bored whilst your hair is being beautified. What more could you ask for?

"The customer is always wrong" – I was not satisfied with my experience at Public. I arrived and was turned away because of scheduling problems on their part. I would have been satisfied had they offered to squeeze me in but after a brief but heated argument w/ Alder, I decided never to return to Public.

Amazing Salon & Alder Rocks! – I've been going to the Public since the fall when I found it listed online. I was able to get an appointment for that day with Alder and he's AWESOME. I have really sucky hair, wavy/curly, dry, frizzy, changes moods every day, never looks good, etc. I've tried half a dozen salons in NYC and no one could give me a cut I liked. Alder listened to what I wanted, actually looked and and thought about my hair type and face shape, (I hate it when a stylist washes your hair before even noticing what it looks like dry), and gave me a great cut that suits me and that I can recreate at home. It's a little edgy, but not too extreme, and cut so well that it lasts for 6 weeks (I have long hair). And I agree with the other reviewers about the people/place being unpretentious but cool. Check it out.

Very friendly, young and cool. – I moved to NYC about 1 year ago and as a novice had my share of hair disappointments. Then I asked someone whose hair always looks stylish and she recommended Public. It does not look like one of upscale salons of Manhattan, but very much in the style of a trendy Williamsburg.

I got Thomas and he is a professional! It is not just words: he got his training at Vidal Sassoon in California and London and it says it all. To cut hair professionally you have to understand construction, not just be fashionable and trendy. On top of it all, he is sweet and unpretentious. Thank you, Thomas! (I hope I spelled his name right...)

'Rachel'? Doubt it. – I have been going to public for 2 years and am fiercely loyal.

Public is probably the most fashion forward yet non-pretentious salon you can find in NYC.

All the staff are amazing, kind and incredibly talented.

The last thing you will get is a 'Rachel'.

This Place Rocks! – I have never written a review but, I actually had to do this because I got the most amazing cut and experience at Public. I'm a guy who maybe cuts his hair once every six months and my ex-girlfriend always said this place was awesome so I went.

They booked me with Andy who only cuts men (but he later told me he cuts women who are referred) . He was covered in tattoos but was very friendly and made me feel comfortable right away. After washing my hair with some great smelling shampoo (Davines?) he sat me in a chair right by the window and proceeded to 'razor-cut' my hair. Right away I knew this was going to be good and it was.

I have never had so many compliments in my life!

Plus the music and the space is amazing. it's like hanging out in a really cool apartment with great music.

I highly recommend going here.

Don't listen to other reviews – The previous three reviews all seem suspiciously similar. Yeah yeah yeah. You got a 'Rachel' cut. Maybe you look so unhip that it suits you. This place IS friendly and knowledgable. You get what you pay for. As a guy, I hate paying so much for haircuts but it's better than walking around looking like someone put a bowl on my head and started snipping away. I got a fresh cut and was completely satisfied.

Don't worry about what the competition is saying about this great salon. It must be great if the competition is bad-mouthing it so much.

AVOID – I never write reviews, but if I can prevent someone from making the tragic, costly mistake that I made-- then this is neccessary. I have curly hair. It was the worst haircut I've ever had in my life, and I'm not even picky. It was so expensive. They didn't listen. They weren't nice. I, too, was victim of the bad 90's "Rachel" do. It was so awful that no one even lied about it to me -- even people I didn't know very well made a face and said, "yeah, that IS bad." I had to wear my hair up for 2 months before even somewhat recovering.
