Horrific experience. – The place isn't kept up at all and managed very poorly. Was actually threatened by a trainer! And management did nothing!!!
The guy had become huge over a very short period of time and the obvious juicing had made him become VERY aggressive. He was doing a circuit on three of the machines in the upper weight room -which at the time only had three people in it -the trainer, myself and another member- but mostly he was regaling the other member about how big he had become in such a short time.
An old man came up and tried to use one of the machines and the trainer shouted out from across the room "Hey you! I'm on that machine." The old man was startled. "Don't work out there!" the trainer shouted again. The old man went back down to the lower weight room and the trainer went back to talking to the other member (about himself).
After about 5 more minutes (and the trainer is still talking), I needed to work out on one of the machines that he had laid claim to (the Smith machine of which there was only one). As soon as I went towards the machine, he shouted out at me that I couldn't work out on it. I replied, "I'll work in with you."
At that point he stormed across the room and said "That's one of the machines I'm working out on!" I replied, "You haven't worked out on it in over 10 minutes. We can work out on it together."
At which point he replied, "Man, do you know there are people in this gym who would kill a f**k like you for saying that? Do you want to go outside now? Do you want to take it outside now?"
I went to the manager on duty and told him that I had just been threatened by a trainer. He seemed very reluctant to do anything. I told him he needed to accompany me back to the upper weight room. We walked back to the room and the trainer came charging across the room again, this time shouting at the top of his lungs, "So! You don't want to settle this like a man? What are you? Some pussy? Let's take it outside! You PUSSY!"
The manager had to restrain him. I went back to working out. The trainer continued to scream out insults as the manager took him outside and sent him home.
I contacted corporate for NYSC the next day and no report had ever been made by the manager. They subsequently suspended the trainer for a month. When he came back, he had lost an amazing amount of muscle mass. Hopefully, something good came out of all this that the trainer stopped doing the steroids that were going to cause such damage to him.
I guess I should have sued. There were plenty of witnesses. I was shocked at the manager not doing anything. I was surprised that corporate's response was nothing more than an email saying that the trainer had been suspended.
Other than that, the place is filthy and crowded. One of the other trainers told me that this NYSC is the place where they send the management personnel they are phasing out. It shows.
not worth the money – I've been to a number of New york sports clubs in Brooklyn and Manhattan; this is by far the worst of them all. The club is not clean, the staff is not friendly, it is cramped, and over-crowded. I have been a member of NYSC for a couple of years but am currently looking for a new gym because I strongly feel that this club is far too expensive considering the services it overs.
horrible experience with them – Watch out for Town Sports clubs, including NYSC. I had a horrible experience. Member through my wife's employer, at a good monthly rate. When she left her job, my club manager told me my membership was cancelled and I was no longer allowed to work out at the club, unless I rejoined and paid an initiation fee and much higher monthly rate. Not very customer friendly, but fair enough. 16 months later, realized they had never stopped billing our CC (granted, should have been checking, CC was on auto-pay). I can only guess the club manager was trying to trick me into switching to a higher-priced membership, maybe one for which he would get a commission. After multiple conversations with customer service and CEO's office, they would not refund the 16 months of fees - despite the fact that they confirmed that i had not been to the club a single time in those 16 months - b/c I did not send a certified letter to cancel membership. This is the behavior they endorse from their managers?
Very poor gym! Poor Staff! – THe gym first of all is very dirty. The staff doesn't even speak to you unless you are in very good shape. Most of the time the staff are arrogant and are talking inappropriately around the gym members. I highly recommend that no one joins this gym.
Great Personal Trainer - Hassan Bailey – I've been a member of this gym since it opened and while I've been tempted to go to places closer to my home and office, I always come back to this location, mainly because I have used one of their trainers, Hassan Bailey, for years and he is the best there is. Funny, friendly and REALLY REALLY good at what he does and I have the results to prove it. If you are looking for a good neighborhood gym and a great trainer I highly recommend the Park Slope location and Hassan!
This go-to gym's red-and-white logo is widespread across all boroughs. – In Short
With expansion into the outer boroughs, Newark and Long Island, NYSC's locations have become so ubiquitous that New Yorkers are likely to have a location near work or home, if not both. This emphasis on convenience extends to its signature circuit training program, the 22-minute Xpressline--not to mention the range of equipment, from Cybex and Icarian machines to Hammer Strength free weights. Other offerings include classes that focus on core-strengthening, flexibility and kickboxing.
going down hill – I've been a member for about 4 years now. The club was pretty good for 1-2. Since then it's filthy - grimy machines, crud in bottle holders that makes me wince, dust clots, sitting dust everywhere and only fair bathroom cleanliness. Lots of minor repairs go undone - straps, grips, cables, multiple lockers. Some new equipment is welcome. The staff sometimes has a kind of attitude that the space belongs to them and not primarily to the members who pay for the service. It?s subtle but noticeable. I?m not an elitist but I pay a lot for membership and so I don?t want to accommodate the staff during my visits. Some are terrific, no mistake about that. I?ve seen staff taking a nap in the front lobby stretched out with at towel on their head. It's usual to see a trainer or housekeeping staff working out in uniform. a couple of times I saw housekeeping staff working out in plain clothes but then go to work in between sets. That wouldn't be a big deal except that there is a lot to be done there and I?m lying on a grimy mat - they used to get mopped regularly.
