Do NOT get your cake at The Great Dane.
My wife and I ordered our wedding cake from The Great Dane and it was (quite literally) one of the worst experiences of my life. First, they inserted thin metal wires (into our cake) to attach edible sugar flowers - after we paid them $80 extra to have them individually hand dipped (and attached to the cake) with white chocolate.
Second, after 3 wedding guests choked on the metal wires that were left (without anyone knowing) in the wedding cake - including my bride who had a metal wire lodged in her throat and had to be rushed to the emergency room - The Great Dane denied using metal wires. When we told them that we still had some cake left, and could show them that they did use metal wires, they told us it was our fault for not taking them out before serving our guests - they didn't once say they were sorry.
Shockingly - just shockingly - the staff at The Great Dane was actually rude to my wife (and literally hung up on her) when she called to ask them why they used metal wires in our wedding cake after we paid them extra to attach all of the edible sugar flowers with white chocolate.
Accidents happen, and we're not unreasonable people, but when accidents happen you would at least expect an apology. But it's been one year since our wedding day, and now (adding insult to injury) they're refusing to take our order for our 1 year anniversary cake (which we pre-paid for along with our wedding cake and was part of our original contract.)
It's hard to believe, but they literally refused to take our order on the phone, and said that in order to take our order they would have to call us back - and, to date, (despite our repeated phone calls to try and place our order) they have refused to call us back. When I called to suggest that they could just refund that portion of the money we paid for the anniversary cake (since they have refused to take our order, or call us back) they hung up on me too.
Don't get me wrong, they're all sweet and smiles when they're taking your money, but once you've paid the customer service goes right out the window. In all honesty, it's shocking to me that this establishment has managed to stay in business, treating customers like they do. So please do yourself a favor and find a different bakery. The staff of The Great Dane are simply not nice people, and while their baked goods can actually be pretty darn tasty (as long as the metal wires don't kill you) the horrible way that they treat their customers makes this a place a truly horrible establishment to be avoided at all costs.
Fortunately, there are lots and lots of very fine bakeries in Southern California - take my advice and avoid The Great Dane.
I wouldn't have taken the time to write this review if I hadn't had a truly horrible experience at The Great Dane, and I only wish that someone had warned me before I used them to make our wedding cake. Hopefully this review will prevent you from making the same mistake I d
Spoiled Cake! (and they don't care....) – Finding a good bakery is a challenge. I tried the award winning bakeries in OC, and found they are nothing great.
searching for a wedding cake is also a challenge, so we came upon this bakery and made an appt to sample 'wedding' cakes. we were somewhat impressed and ordered a cake for our wedding, which was very good. (pricey, but wedding cakes generally are.)
thinking I finally found a good bakery, I went back a few years later to order a cake for my friends 40th bday party. the cake cost over $200. It was chocolate with an 80's theme & lots of fondant decorations. Though the cake looked 80's, the fondant was overwhelming. but, the real problem was, something tasted a bit off, and everyone noticed it, even the birthday person. we all thought it tasted spoiled, so no one ate the cake. We think the bakery used spoiled sour cream, it had that awful spoiled milk taste. Just to make it clear, the bday was in May, and it wasn't hot that day-the cake had been refrigerated as soon as we picked it up and we took it out just before serving! I paid $200 for a spoiled cake that no one wanted!
I called the bakery, told them what happened, and no one wanted to assist me. I called for days to try and resolve it, but no one returned my calls and clearly no one cared.
my husband ordered a chocolate cake for me a few months later, I guess he didn't know about the cake at my friends bday party..he paid about $50, which was expensive for the size. first of all, he said (and he never complains) that the flower decorations as well as the color of the flowers were completely differerent than what he ordered, but most of all, the cake itself was dry! I mean, completely dry, not moist at all. I decided at that point, and made it clear to my husband, that as much as we loved their wedding cake (a white cake) I would never go back, and he agreed. It's too bad it didn't work out..I would love to find a great bakery, esp one that cares about their quality and customers.
amazing pastries – The cakes here are literally world famous. They have baked cakes for presidents, royalty, and celebrities alike. Their wedding cakes are like a piece of art. Actually all their cakes are increadibly beautiful. I have never had a better cake than I have had from the Great Dane. I don't really consider this a coffee shop, although they have great Scandinavian coffee. There isn't a lots of seating, or really a place you would want to hang out for a long time. People definately go there for pastries and cakes above all else. If you do want a cake, I suggest calling ahead and ordering one because the cakes they have for sale daily sell out quickly.
Great Cakes – Ive tried just about everything in this Bakery.
Everything is outstanding. I get all my cakes here for any occasion. A very reasonable price as well.
Delicious Desserts – Princess cakes and Kringles, almond crescents and bear claws, chocolate decadence and white chocolate mousse cups topped with fresh berries, everything taste as good as they look.
