It was a pleasure working with Mark! I never sold scrap gold before and decided it was time to clean out the jewerly box of items that hadn't been worn in decades.

I first went to another Saratoga gold buyer who weighed the gold and gave me a price. The person I worked with and everything about this business seemed shady.

I researched online and found Mark's name. After making an appointment, Mark spent time explaining how the process works and carefully evaluated my pieces. I felt comfortable asking any question I had - then was given a check. The amount was a little higher than the other Saratoga business, but that may have been due to a gold price fluctuation in my favor.

I walked out of Mark's office feeling that I was treated properly. His experience and time in the capital district speaks volumes.

Seller BEWARE!!!!!! I can deal with an attitude, if I feel that the appraisal is fair. I got three appraisals and Lawson's was the lowest by far. I ultimately sold my items for almost 50% more than Lawson's offer. Get multiple appraisals. It paid off well for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a thoughtful and honest experience in dealing with Mr. Lawson at Mark Lawson Antiques. There were a few old things collecting dust around the house that I wanted to clear out and hopefully sell for a fair price. A few years ago my daughter-in-law took two paintings to Mark Lawson Antiques and felt that Mr. Lawson provided a considerate evaluation and made a very reasonable offer. Upon this recommendation I arranged for an appointment to bring in a couple small bags of jewelry, silverware, and some other odds and ends that I was ready to part ways with. When I arrived, I didn’t know what to expect, but was put at ease by the friendly atmosphere and Mr. Lawson’s sincerity. He examined every piece of jewelry and the silver set and then explained how he arrived at the final values for each. I felt confident in Mr. Lawson’s appraisal and happily accepted his offer. He also gave me a recommendation for a reputable local business to contact about my record collection. I was pleased with Mr. Lawson’s honesty and helpful attitude and would definitely recommend Mark Lawson Antiques to others.

Comfortable experience with a pronounced level of honesty and integrity. Being relatively new to the antique world, the thought of having my things evaluated was initially very daunting. After reading the article in the Times Union and seeing that they sponsored the Roadshow, I decided Mark Lawson Antiques was worth a try, and boy am I glad I did. Not to say that I had overly valuable items, which I didn't, but when I left I felt better informed and at ease about tackling my mother's estate. Everything was comfortable, from the initial phone conversation to the inviting and friendly faces I met. Knowing that there are honest people out there gave me a renewed sense of confidence. I will definitely be back!

I sold some jewelry to Mark Lawson as one of the last steps in settling my grandmother's estate. Mr Lawson and his assistant were very helpful and very pleasant. I really appreciated that he took the time to talk about which of my grandmother's jewelry was worth more than scrap and what was just being sold for its metal value, he was also very helpful in directing me on where to take my grandmother's old books and things. When I asked if I could have a receipt because I wanted to be able to itemize everything for my brothers, Mr Lawson wrote one out for me (nice letterhead too, so I'm not sure what that previous review was talking about??) and didn't seem to think it was unusual or anything> I'd definitely go again if I find anything else I'd like him to look at.

Good experience and fair prices. My mom is in the process of downsizing and we took a variety of items in to Mark Lawson Antiques. We knew the vintage jewelry would be hit or miss since we weren't sure if it was real gold or just costume jewelry-- we had a mix of both and for several of the older fine pieces of jewelry Mr. Lawson paid us for above their scrap value. My mom also brought a lot of old Asian tourist souvenirs that my grandparents brought back from Japan and China. Unfortunately, they aren't worth much in terms of value, but we were referred to a local auction where we should get at least something for them.

Overall, it was a great experience. We thought Mr. Lawson and his assistant were very nice and polite, even though unfortunately we just didn't have anything that was worth that much. Oh well. Not everyone finds a priceless antique in their grandma's attic. :) We were happy with the prices we received, walked away with some money in our pockets and we were more than happy with the customer service.

Seller beware: "Pawn star" exactly. Don't leave the premises without a written receipt.

I had decided to sell an assortment of gold jewelry, an antique gold watch, silver bar, etc. and went to Mark Lawson first. He evaluated what I had, taking the time to carefully review each piece. He gave me a price. Since he was the first place I went to - which I explained to him - I took the items to three other places, including Old Saratoga Coin and Roman Jewels. Mark offered the best price for the items, and I went back to him in the end. I always tell people to check out at least three places, and I will tell you to skip Roman Jewels because they came in more than 20% less than everyone else. And, unlike Mark Lawson - who was gracious and charming - the people at Roman Jewels were not very nice at all.

Antique Roadshow? No. Pawn Star? Yes. – If you are looking to get an honest appraisal value of an item, collection, or estate, go to an ASA/ISA professional who has no vested interest in profiting from your belongings. If you're looking to unload some gold scrap or need some quick cash, Mark Lawson Antiques is a legitimate alternative.

Honestly, I think Mark is a good businessman who has grabbed the coattails of the Antiques Roadshow and held on for the ride. He is not the least bit interested in your antique or it's provenance, only how much cash he can make from it. And that's not what the Antiques Roadshow is about.

Sadly, I went to him for evaluation and advice, hoping he could point me in the direction of a local auction house that specialized in fine jewelry (or tell me if his business had one coming up). I had no intention of selling my item on the spot. (Hey, he offers free evaluations, doesn't he?) Once it was clear that I was not going to sell him my item for a very low price, he showed me the door. But he really showed me that he has no class. He gives the Antique Roadshow a bad name.

I will continue my search using the American Society of Appraisers and International Society of Apprisers; organizations which Mark Lawson does not claim to be a member of on his business card or Web site.

Mark Lawson's overpriced, half-assed appraisal... – I scheduled an appointment with Mark Lawson to do a complete estate appraisal more than a month in advance. We agreed that he would do a write up of the approximate value to the estate and highlight any key items for $375.00. A few days before my appointment his secretary called me to rescheduled and pushed my appointment out more than month and a half. The day of the appointment Mark Lawson was about a half an hour late. He casually walked in and acted as though he was annoyed and bothered by being there. He pointed out the ballpark prices of some furniture noting that the market was depressed and said there wasn
