The sushi chefs here at Oyako chain smoke outside their restaurant, then after throwing their cigarette butts in the street, walk back to their counter and without washing their hands, prepare sushi! This in violation of Santa Monica and L.A. county health laws.
When I complained to the chef he pretended to not understand English. Don't eat here unless the smell of smoking and cigarettes in your food doesn't bother you.
Perfect intimate sushi joint with accommodating service. All of the menu items are hits. Loved the light cucumber wrapped Santa Monica Roll.
I love Oyako sushi!!!!!!! – I love Oyako! This is some of the most inventive and well presented sushi I have encountered in Santa Monica. I always try the specials they are so worth it. It's not like you just get an average roll with soy on the side. Chris's food touches the palate in such a way that your soul gets some satisfaction too. I recommend the ichiban roll, the watermelon on the appetizer menu and many other rolls as well. Also the bento box is a great deal for lunch. The service is always great. I have no idea what 4n is talking about but I've never had bad service here.
Avoid this place. – I will not lie if I say Oyako has the most horrible service I have ever received.
The waiters forgot to place my order.
My family, received their food I asked where my food was, she said it was coming, 15 minutes later I still did not get anything, Finally, she said she dose not remember what I have ordered and I need to place my order again. About 40 minutes later, a long time after my husband and daughter finished their food I finally received my meal with no apology or explanation.
I was very upset.
Today, a year later I decided to give Oyako another chance.
I went there with my very well behaved daughter, The waitress was very rude to me for no apparent reason, did not get everything I have ordered (I have ordered a spice she said she will get - twice and then did not remember I have asked for it & Finally agree to bring it after we were done eating) Also, she was going to charge me for a disposable cup with a lid for my Daughter. On our way out I have witnessed her being rude to another person sitting at the table near by.
Decent sushi – I've been here several times and have enjoyed my experiences. Their fish is perfectly acceptable and their bento boxes are varied and ample. Their rolls are inventive if not entirely authentic and it's nice to people-watch from the patio area.
Impressed – My friend suggested this place after we realized Rose Cafe was closed for the day. I was pleasantly surprised by the sashimi. Pretty good and well priced. Nice atmosphere, small and cozy.
Shoppers flock to this Westside cafe for a quick sushi fix between boutiques. – In Short
This unassuming sushi joint is a magnet for shoppers, beachcombers and pre-partiers. A white room is adorned with the requisite bamboo screen, geometrical ruby-red lounges and artfully displayed twigs. The sushi bar is visible from the open kitchen, but diners can't eat there--instead they lounge on sleek boxy chaises and ottomans. Sushi offerings include tataki tuna sashimi presented in a rose-like swirl and specialty rolls like the Ocean Park, with tuna, avocado and crab meat.
