Chillaxing – Got to Mobays, 15 minutes early for 6:00 reservation. Tour group had completely occupied the entire restaurant. Bar full as well. Tour bus late picking group up. Stood at bar to wait. Watched ESPN in HD. Seated around 6:15/20. Still not bad. Staff friendly - kept asking us if we were doing okay - appreciated that. Once seated, service was great. Drinks, appetizers and food served promptly. Drinks were excellent. Real easy going down. Had the tropical martini. Nice. Wasn't crazy about the cornbread, but others enjoyed it. For appetizers we had cod fish cakes, sweet plaintains and barbecue chicken wings. The cod fish cakes and plaintains were excellent. The cakes were firm, not too salty and wonderfully flavored. The plaintains were perfect. Not overly sweet and blended well with the flavor of the codfish. Wasn't crazy about the barbecue wings. They were the last appetizer to go. Had St. Louis ribs, mac and cheese, greens and table shared yams. Ribs, large - a huge portion. Good texture to the meat, but too spicy for my taste, as were the greens, just a little too much kick. Enjoyed mac and cheese (just enough cheese) and yams (perfectly sweet). Overall, a good experience. If we went again I would avoid the barbecue, it just isn't for me. But overall, a very good experience.

Just Moved into the Neighborhood – I just moved into the neighborhood and I think that I have found my "Cheers". After two visits, they literally did know my name. The barbecue is a hidden winner on the menu, it's not a barbecue restaurant, but the Dry Rubbed, Hickory and Mesquite Smoked Ribs that I had last night, were the best that I have ever eaten. Smoky, with a tangy sauce, complete with tender candied yams and collard greens that would have made my mama smile. My dining partner had the Escovitched Snapper, it was freshly fried perfectly covered with a melange of pickled and peppered vegetables and spices. She had the Mac & Cheese and Garlicy Sauteed Vegetables, YUM. The cornbread with sauce, is worth going to enjoy, just on it's own. Good live music and the bar was lively, with setting on both sides, looks like quite a singles scene. We almost missed the place, since it's so tucked away on 125th Street, put it is so pretty inside. Altogehter a totally relaxing evening. Hello Cheers, thanks for welcoming me to the neighborhood.

My Worst experience ever – I went to Mobay last week with my friends four of us at about 8 p.m. we were seated in the back after the waiter seated us he never came back until 20 minutes after to hand us the menu and walked away I called him and asked him if we could have some water and he went back and come five minutes after. When he finally come back to take our orders my girlfriend was on decided on what she wanted to order and he just walked away with the look as if we were disturbing him. Finally we got our food everything was going fine until we receive the bill we call the server over to a table to ask him what was going on with the bill because they were things on the bill that we did not order he then told me he will go take care of it was a computer error. My girlfriend then advised me to check my statement when it comes in because Mobay of the history of double charging people watch your account. When he brought back the bill It he just tossed it on the table and walked away we were sitting right at the door and I could overhear the servers talking nasty about my table saying that?s they don?t like broke people coming here this place is not for everybody and how he wished for my table to just go. This was one of my worst dining experience and I will never go back there ever again. May be the server is right it?s not the place for everyone because I didn?t allow them to charge me for something that I didn?t eat .so good luck and watch your bill. Don?t believe the hype

One Great Harlem Find – I'm always keeping an eye out for great Harlem restaurants, being Jamaican and Southern too I've been pretty disillusioned by NYC BBQ--and therefore I often settled for less. I had my doubts about MoBay uptown, but boy was I schooled this past Fourth of July! I went with a 4 person party. We were not seated very promptly but it WAS a Holiday and there were about 5 birthday parties being attended to. Our wait was about than 15-20minutes.

My eyes wandered around the menu for 10 minutes straight: Pan-seared catfish, St. Louis BBQ (which I just tried at two other restaurants), etc. Being 4 people, we all had quite a buffet. Here are some things I tried:

-BBQ Buffalo wings (appetizer): rich tangy, sweet and mildly spicy sauce, very juicy

-BBQ Ribs (St. Louis Style): soft and well-seasoned, cooked just right, sauce not over done.

-Fried Catfish: just like @ a southern fish-fry...except much less greasy.

-Mac & Cheese: MoBay gets my MAC & CHEESE Award for most flavor. Forget all those bland creamy dishes served at more well-known BBQ joints.

-Collard greens: juicy NOT SOUPY. Perhaps it was hickory-steamed

-Jerrk Snapper : very spicy, for those with tropical tastebuds. Love it, though maybe it was too spicy for some.

-Cornbread is out-of-this-world. Homemade, sweet, and semi-moist it comes drizzled in some (cranberry?) sauce.

-Dessert: I had red velvet cake. Fluffy, but still rich, whipped buttery frosting. I made a red velvet cake a while ago which couldn't hold a candle to this one. After dinner was done, we crossed the street to CAROLE's DAUGHTER (a naturified and more unique bath & body shop).

The drinks selections were very bright and fun. The food came quickly. I don't know what else to say except.....**PLEASE DON"T EVER CHANGE CHEFS!!**

We all know what happened to Sylvia's.

Good authentic Jamaican food! – Finally a Jamaican restaurant that did not disappoint. I dined at Mobay this past weekend with 2 family members and we thoroughly enjoyed our food. We all have taste buds for authentic Jamaican food and must say we were very pleased. We ordered jerked chicken, escovitch king fish with bammie and snapper rundown. The rum cake rivals Tortuga a specialty cake from the Cayman Islands; it was simply delicious.

My only complaint relates to the noise level. The restaurant has a great ambiance but because it's relatively small you're able to hear the conversation of the party 3 tables away. Everyone appeared to be shouting and then to top it off the music was also loud.

Finally the staff was friendly and attentive. Our server was very pleasant and kept a smile on her face.

MORE Mo Bay – Well. I have dined from the Amalfi Coast, to the ports of Costa Rica and back again. But, I do declare: NOTHING, NOWHERE welcomes me -beckons even- like the lure of Mo Bay.

Every time my plane hits the pavement- I make a beeline to this gem of an establishment. When I?m home, you can find me and my extended family (loyal Mobay patrons) posted at the bar. I can usually be spotted as the one wiping delectable bbq sauce from the corner of her mouth. Or, I?m negotiating the last of the jerked wings on the plate of my neighbor to the left. I don?t know if it?s that these folks have the only smoker in Harlem, for authentic down-home ?cue, or, if it?s just a mojo they have in that kitchen. Whatever it is, it has put a spell on me!

Mobay will capture you within her warm, capable hands- their menu satisfying whatever it is you fancy. The setting is at once lavish and intimate in muted tones; the entertainment consistently hot, and the service, in my experience, has always been attentive and friendly. Mobay is EXACTLY what Harlem has needed for a long time now- a refuge, a balm amidst relentless city tempos? It has become the place, ?where everybody knows your name.? Find me there?

A Most Marvelous Meal! Best Grooves – The first thing that I noticed about Mobay Uptown Restaurant was the relaxing decor of muted earth tones that just felt like "home". Even beforeI tasted any of the Caribbean or Southern foods that I had heard so much about, I knew that my trips to Harlem would be quite frequent; a natural order, after finding such a great place!

First, let me say, I have been fortunate to dine in many fine restaurants in the U.S., Caribbean, and Europe, so I've developed a taste for fine cuisine, and Mobay delivers where it matters: Great food, relaxing setting, and exceptional Music, and friendly service. So much, that I find myself treating my friends and Business associates to this special treat often. And they are all delited as well.

My favorite dishes are the tender smoked, juicy bar-b-que, curry shrimp, collard greens, finished off with the best Rum cake since a recent visit to Trinidad- Tobago. Paradise for dining is right Uptown at Mobay!

So, if you want a great dining experience, with delectable dining, devine decor, exceptional entertainment, surrounded by friendly people, you've found the right place in NYC. It's my favorite, soon it will be your as well. Ms Tobago

Mediocre food, indifferent service. Go somewhere else. – Why didn't I check here first? Live and learn. My husband and I were stuck for a place to have dinner, and we wanted something in our neighborhood. We went in, and sat ourselves as we didn't see any sign of a hostess, waiter, etc. After sitting there for 10 minutes, we finally caught someone's eye to tell them we'd like to have dinner (I didn't want them to think we wanted to occupy a table to just have a drink and listen to band).

I agree with previous posters. The service is terrible. They go out of their way to avoid looking anyone in the eye as they cruise through the restaurant. It seemed like they were well aware that every table was clamoring for attention, but they'd get to the table when they got there, and you can just sit and wait until then;

The food was mediocre. I had southern fried chicken, it was a thigh and leg with two sides, the plantains almost cold. OK value for $15 I guess, but certainly not presented with any pride, it looked like it was ladled out of a steam table. How about a piece of parsley? No? My husband fared better with spare ribs, but at $20 for half a portion(why can't you use this word?), certainly not as tasty, or good value as Dinosaur for example.

I agree also that the management doesn't seem to care. The manager sat at the table next to us as we waited 10 minutes for someone to clear our dirty plates and check on us. He obviously could tell that we were impatient, we were craning out necks looking for our waitress. We finally signalled the bus boy and asked him to get our check. Finally the waitress comes with bill, and then asks how it was. A bit late. I didn't realize until reading here that gratuity was added, but now it makes sense - that's the only way they'll make money. I most carefully left exactly 10%, and now feel completely ripped off to have left even that. We'll never go back.

Veggie meal okay but great cornbread & live music – As a vegetarian living in Harlem, I was glad to find a restaurant with a vegetarian section on the menu. I ordered the BBQ "Chicken," which was okay, pretty much vegetable protein smothered in BBQ sauce. My mango martini reeked of cheap vodka, and the sweet plantain was okay. I ordered the coconut pineapple cake for dessert, which they were out of so I got the chocolate cake, which was too rich for my taste. However my date was happy with his organic salad and coconut shrimp. My highlights were the delicious cornbread, the live music, and the great service. We tipped our waiter a couple dollars extra in addition to the 18% already included. I would give it another try and order a different drink, entree, and the coconut pineapple cake.
