Great Prices – Sports basement has the best prices for lift tickets.
As for sports gear, while the selection is not massive, they stock quality stuff and very competitive prices. I never have to worry about overpaying for anything and the gear is of good quality.
It is also nice that there are several locations throughout the city. Makes the shopping trip much easier because you never have to stress out about getting across town if you need to pick up any gear.
Great place to shop.
Terrible Online Service! – Looking at the other reviews, I would assume that at the actual brick and mortar store, the service is acceptable and the entire experience is satisfactory. Ordering online however, proves to be a different story...
I ordered a product online, then after FOUR days, they charge my account and says the order has been confirmed. The product did not arrive until 9 business days (13 days total!) and my attempts at communication were comparable to watching molasses shift (ie. did not happen).
The product also looked beat up and the packaging was tattered and loose. There wasn't any physical damage to the product, but it did not look brand new.
Their prices are low, but I would never order another item from this store online (or at all after this experience). Be advised!
Citysearch Editorial Review – The problem with sporting equipment is that we often spend all this money on gear only to see it condemned to a lifetime of disuse. Sports Basement has a cure for that, namely its location. Across the street from Crissy Field, the beach, and the bay, just about everything in this cavernous and well-stocked 80,000-foot former military commissary encourages its customers to stop spending so much time shopping and go have fun. A sign for the register reads, “Conga line starts here,” tents hang from the ceiling, old skies are mounted on the wall as abstract art, and the store even rents bikes. Shoppers can find everything from bear canisters to fedoras, all at closeout prices and a free ping-pong table near the exit offers distraction for any bored or reluctant companions. It’s the Presidio’s outlet version of Lombardi’s only bigger and more fun.
They got it all! – I looove this store. It's so huge and it has such great prices. So many different things to look at and they pretty much have everything for the outdoorsy personality type. It's fun, lots of selections and a great place to shop for clothing, equipment and shoes. Sports Basement Rules!
Great low prices on sports equipment – I really love the great deals that I get here. I recently went in to buy a lot of camping gear, jackets, and backpacks. I was very impressed by the selection, though a little dismayed by the lack of helpful staff. I did have to go out of my way to find someone who could finally answer a question I had about a product, and they didn't seem to really know the answer anyway. I guess that's what you have to settle for when you're getting greatly reduced prices. I have to say that the product remains to be of excellent quality!
Editorial Review – Discount mini-chain keeps runners, hikers, bikers and campers, among others, outfitted--and has a full-service bike repair shop to boot.
The Basement Has Gone Downhill – The staff at the Presidio store are VERY RUDE and NOT HELPFUL, from the floor staff to the register staff. I walked around for 20 minutes without anyone asking me if I needed help. When I did ask for help, I was visually scolded by the two women for interupting their personal conversation. I will never go to this location ever! The staff at the 16th St Store run circles around them. I'm greeted at the 16th St store, and every staff person has been friendly and outgoing ---- they still have the charm of the original store.
the best place for workout gear – Sports Basement has a great selection at the lowest prices in SF and the staff is very knowledgable. They've helped me get great running shoes and perfect hiking boots. Always my first stop when I need anything for working out or for the outdoors (I've gotten super deals on fleeces and long underwear for camping, etc). It's kinda in a weird spot but parking is not an issue.
