  • Award-Winning Clam Chowder

The Story of Pike Place Chowder by Larry Mellum: I am frequently asked the question, How was the recipe for your Award-Winning Clam Chowder developed? In 1991, a business partner and I opened the Charlestown Street Cafe in West Seattle. It was a great little restaurant with an upbeat, loyal staff, and its popularity exceeded our wildest expectation. In a typical week, we served 4,500 customers in a space of only 125 seats. When we opened, we decided to offer a Soup of the Day as one of our Specials. Of course, the Friday special would be New England Clam Chowder. With that, I said, have a good recipe that will work. The Chef, with a little bravado, said that he had a chowder recipe that was probably better than mine. This inspired one of the cooks to chime in, It can't be better than the one my mama cooked every Friday. This led to a kitchen rendition.

An awesome assortment of soup at this popular spot, even a vegan chowder. Go for the classic Boston-style and it'll warm you right down to your wool socks. They also serve satisfying sandwiches and have outdoor seating when the weather's nice.

Not being a fan of seafood at all I was dragged here by my girlfriend and her mom. Luckily the place knows that some people don't like fish. I had so excellent tomato bisque and sourdough while everyone else slurped up their fishy chowder with blissed out expressions. I have to say everyone enjoyed the place and the long line was worth the wait.

Great Chowder – This place is all about the chowder (I had the 'award winning' New England style), although I've heard they have good Dungeness crab sandwiches too. If you're looking for lunch around Pike's Market this is a great spot. It is true that it is a little expensive, but so is pretty much everything else in the area. It can get a little bit crowded on nice days when there are a lot of people at the market. It is also nice that they have free bread and crackers to go with the soup.

Very tastey soup – I like Pike Place's clam chowder...it was hot and definately fresh chowder...it didn't taste too clammy. I also really like their curried chicken salad..very crisp and unique tasting. Their sourdough was also good.

great soup – wouthwest chicken chowder is great, get the 4for 10$ sampler, otherwise the soups are kind of expensive

Award-winning chowder comes eight ways at this small Pike Place lunch joint. – In Short
Shoppers sit at small tables on bright chairs in this sunny, crowded space in Post Alley. The menu's focus is its sinfully creamy chowder: the original New England is an award-winning velvety delight; the pink-hued salmon variety nicely negates the strong salmon flavor. Manhattan and clear variations are available for those not in a creamy mood, and there are also salad and sandwich options. Free hunks of sourdough are provided for dunking purposes.

Best Chowder in the Northwest – This is the best chowder I've ever had. Being from Oregon, that's hard to swallow. I thought I had tasted the best at Mo's down here, but Pike Place is actually better. I recommend stopping by. I know I will.
