Classic Grill Fare! – I have been to four Daily Grill locations. Their clam chowder is great, as is the tuna melt sandwich, and buffalo shrimp appetizer. This is perhaps a bit more Californian than the other reviewers may have liked, but I began going to the Grill in Newport Beach, CA, and love the place!
Why?!? – In a town with so many wonderful restaurants, how does this wretched restaurant stay open?? I have eaten there a number of times, and the food is the most bland, unexceptional, and boring food I have come across in Portland! The staff is a bit upitty, but reasonable. But the food???? Ick! How can a basic tuna sandwich NOT taste like tuna, I would like to know.... and what you pay for this is completely unreasonable!
May we be seated? – I would love to be able to tell you how the food was, but can't....
We tried to have breakfast there this morning and were ignored for 5 minutes until we had to search for a server and ask to be seated at which point the waitress said she'd be right with us. After walking past us another 3 times without a word, another server told us we would have to wait a couple minutes before anyone could help us.
At this point, it had been 10 minutes so we just left. I find it hard to believe that they are still in business with this lack of customer service. I won't be a hurry to try again.....
Terrible Service – Daily Grill's food, decor, and location are good but they are extremely disorganized and their service is terrible. No one seemed to know what he or she was doing and even messed up on their corrections. We visited during breakfast and it took forever to be served, the order was wrong, they brought three sides of sausage to our table twice that we didn't order or want but eventually made us keep, and then..of course, it took forever to get the bill worked out. Maybe the wait staff-in-training gets the breakfast shift.
Disappointed twice – I have been to this restaurant twice and disappointed with the service both times. The last time I went for breakfast with some friends after completing Race for the Cure. I had won gift certificates from a local radio station and used $50 worth to pay for our $32 tab. The manager refused to give credit for the difference between the $32 and the $50 saying it wasn't "their policy". He even went so far as to imply that I had come by the gift certificates under questionable means because they were not the ones "usually issued". Keep in mind, I was not asking for cash back, simply something on the gift certificate showing the amount remaining. And, all this after terrible service: coffee never refilled, order messed up twice and toast arrived after the meals were eaten. This is the worst dining experience I have had in some time.
Great Food, Location, Service - Perfection – I went with a group, but from the moment I stepped in the door I felt like royalty. From the special attention from the wait staff to a personal visit from the General Manager, the attention each of us received was outstanding. As a group, we were able to sample many appetizers, with the exceptional being the popcorn shrimp and fried calamari. The pot pie was a work of art, the steak sandwich was huge, the meatloaf was a taste of home, and the skirt steak was divine. I'll be returning soon . . . just gotta have that pot pie!
A Big City Bar – Not for the Eugene-moved-to-Portland crowd, Daily Grill has a great happy hour menu and the food tastes just fine. The bar is small and warm. For those who like a city bar, this is one to consider. The pricing is reasonable, to slightly high, but not out of line with a place that caters to those who want a no nonsense, cozy place where you might get stressed out if you don't have character of your own. Don't let the local funk-obsessed reviewer throw you off.
