Dissappointed they closed!! – Restaurant is CLOSED UP!! Visitors center across the street does not know why. We were there yesterday July 1, 2011, and nothing. Tried Penang in March and it seemed a busy evening for the restaurant, and I coming from Malaysia can tell you the food was pretty good, especially the Satay with Peanut Sauce. The service was another thing, oh Lordy. Our waitress/owner found it necessary to sit down and chat with one of her male friends rather than attend her customers. Anyway, I hope if they reopen somewhere, that they get the restaurant running manners she desperately needs. Another big dissapointment for me as it becomes harder and harder to find Malaysian restaurants in this country. But we'll be in Boston in August and they have some of the best there. If anyone hears of another Malaysian restaurant opening in the Triangle area, please let us know; thank's a bunch!!

Worst food and service imaginable – We stopped in here for lunch and looking around at the lack of attention to gen'l cleanliness and decor I was ready to leave but against my better judgement stayed when the waitress finally showed up at our table. The soup was ok, it was the house soup that came with the lunch specials. The main dishes were beyond salty and still had an off odor. Unedible. We sent the entree back and was given the bill with the entree still charged, the waitress became belligerent, said we were paying for the entree and that she was calling the police. I invited her to do so, she left and came back with the entree deleted from the bill. She tossed it on the table and shouted to never return. There were two other customers in the restaurant at the time and both were complaining about their food as well. Worst experience at a restaurant ever. I cannot believe that they will remain in business for long. I think it is probably a health hazard to eat there.

Amazing – Yesterday I had a yearning for Thai food and happened upon the Penang Sushi restaurant. It was the best Asian food that I had eaten in years----and comparable to meals that I've had in San Francisco, which is high praise for me indeed. Everything we had was good, but the two things that stood out for me was the mango, lettuce, and cilantro salad with hot chili oil--- just a perfect combination of flavors--- and the green tea, which had the most beautiful, delicate color that I have ever seen in a green tea. I ordered a chicken dish in a red coconut sauce. The presentation was elegant, and the succulent pieces were perfect in size, all white meat, and not a trace of chicken skin. I am in the process of moving to the Triangle area, and I look forward to eating here often.

Fantastic Penang Curry – My boyfriend and I love penang curry, and have had it all over Raleigh (where we live). A spur of the moment trip to Chapel Hill, and luck of the draw restaurant proved to be a winner. This was the BEST penang curry I've had. We fought over the leftovers!

Server was congenial, and accomodating of packing our leftovers to be motorcycle-friendly.

Will definitely make the trip to Chapel Hill again for this meal!

Perfect Girls Night Out – I went to Penang this weekend with a 3 friends and we all really had a great evening. After reading over the menu, we ended up making it a long dinner with both appetizers and desserts!

I highly recommend the Chicken Satay with Peanut dipping sauce appetizer . I don't know what all is in that sauce but my friends and I are still taking about how delicious it is! Secondly, I highly recommend the Ginger Chicken. The dish was really tasty with a light sauce that was a perfect blend of ginger, spices and scallions. Used my side of brown Rice to soak up the sauce--perfect.

At first we found it difficult to find parking, but we were told about the 2 parking lots on Roberson St: one directly behind the building (Courtyard parking lot to the Left) and the other to the right in the Bentley Building's parking lot (after office hours (aka 6 p.m.)). This made it much easier/faster to get a spot than trying to find a rare open spot on Franklin St.

Our server was really nice and helpful, answering all of our questions about the menu and giving us great recommendations (aka recommending Ginger Chicken!).

Next time I go I'm going to have to try a drink from their bar. The menu has about 5-6 fancy, fruity drinks and a long wine list. They also have a full bar so you can order any classic bar drink too.

Asian Delight – I recently attended a birthday dinner at Penang and was pleasantly surprised. After reading the reviews on citysearch, I wasn't anticipating an exquisite meal let alone a welcoming experience. An intimidating group of 10 gathered for a 50th birthday celebration and was gladly received by our waiter who wasn't a bit turned off by our numbers. He was appreciatively welcoming and warm. We immediately ordered an appetizer of lettuce leaves paired with a Thai chicken dish that was hot and spicy. We didn't have to wait long for it. The waiter graciously gave us time in between each segment of our dining experience keeping tabs on us frequently. The 10 of us ordered a broad range of dishes from the menu such as spring rolls, Pad Thai, Thai salad, ginger chicken and so on. The food wasn't overly salty and came out warm and timely. While all of us were pleased with our dishes we didn't hesitate to share our choices with each other. The waiter patiently cleared our dishes and left us alone while the birthday man opened his gifts. Keeping the birthday celebration in check, the waiter and staff brought out a free dessert and sang happy birthday! What a surprise, as it wasn't even requested of them. All around, this was a dining extravaganza that was heightened by the Asian delight that Penang represents. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!

horrible horrible horrible food – I am a local Pastry Chef and have been in the food industry for many years and I can honestly say the dinner we had at Penang was some of the worst food I?ve ever eaten in my life. Our order was taken on the back of a reciept the waiter had in his pocket. Our drinks were in old beat up plastic mugs just like the kind you would find at a BBQ restaurant with the indoor picnic tables. We ordered spring rolls and Kha Gai soup for apps. The rolls were very ordinary, tiny, but good none-the-less. My soup arrived in a hot bowl, but the soup was a little more than warm, although, delicious, we thought we were off to a good start, then our entree came, Red Curry and Lemongrass Chicken. The curry was dark brown, not red. I couldn?t eat it, it was disgusting, I can?t even describe the flavor. They used chicken thighs (why? cheap?) and I don?t think they were cooked through. This no more resembled Red Curry than the used oil from my trucks oil change. My lemongrass chicken tasted like dirt, really! not even the slightest hint at lemongrass flavor. I think it was in there because the dish was full of some sort of inch long fibers. The chicken bits were tossed in some sort of thick yellow/red fiber paste, no salt, no flavor, just plain gross. OH, THEY CHARGED US FOR WHITE RICE! $.80 each! MY GOD, ITS AN ASIAN RESTAURANT! HE ASKED US IF WE WOULD LIKE RICE WITH OUR MEAL, WE SAID YES.... NO MENTION OF ADDED PRICE! Our LUNCH order came to $50.00 and we didn?t order any alcohol. We didn?t eat hardly anything and they didn't care, nor questioned why we refused to take it home with us. The total lack of care, interest, or concern and the absolute horrible food left me feeling like we had just been had by a con artist. I would have had a better Asian meal if I had put peanut butter on chicken McNuggets. Read the reviews, I wish I had. Do you notice all the ones with 5 stars that read like an ad? I bet they wrote those to try and counter all the bad ones, take my advise, eat elsewhere

SOOOOO SALTY – We went for lunch today and there were only a few other people there. None the less, it took forever to get our food. We got Miso soup to start and it was more like salt water. Then our main dishes came. One of us ordered coconut shrimp fried rice, it did not have the green beans or cucumbers listed on the menu and there were only 3 little shrimp in it, oh and no coconut! When asked about the lack of coconut the waiter actually said its just a name, there is no coconut. The other dish was ginger chicken which could have been microwaved left overs. It was swimming in salty soy sauce which is probably where the ginger was but I didn't take time to find it. The spring rolls that came with the dish were the size of my thumb and cold. The side salad was iceberg lettuce with some cucumber and carrots that had seen better days. Overall, EXTREMELY disappointing, you're better off getting some fast food Chinese take out if you want a more authentic meal.

Great Restaurant! – I visited Penang recently after hearing friends rave about the great food and atmosphere. I was a bit apprehensive at first, dining out of my element, but I found the restaurant to be a very relaxing and friendly atmosphere. The food was fantastic and the service was great. We didn?t wait long for our food and we never had an empty glass. A very friendly manager greeted our table and we left with smiles on our faces. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great food and excellent service. I look forward to dining with them again soon!

This is NOT the place to look for the real Penang food! – We were very exited to find a Penang Restaurant in the area. Happily ordered the famous Penang "Fried Koay Teow" - Oh NO! The look is no where closed, not to mention about the taste!

Two years later, we went back again. This trip, we avoid the entire stir fried menu and tried the curry and nasi lemak. Nothing great but at least we are not as disappointed as the first time.
