I stumbled into Bembe on accident one night. Behind the door curtain was a packed bar full of salsaing couples, and the night was a whirlwind. You should definitely go here to dance salsa.

Wiliamsbug best dance spot – Thank god for Bembe. I have been looking for a spot to let loose and be myself. It took a little patients to get in but once I did I saw why. There was a wave of people dancing and a vibe unique to Bembe. There was no attitude, only good cheap drinks and the best Dj I have heard in a while who was joined by a live percussionist. The drummer kept the crowd going all night. A little wait at the bar, but that gave me a chance to bump in to the woman I now call my lady. I'll be back!

This place used to be good – I used to frequent this place weekly and I'm very sad to say that after visiting last night, it has taken a serious nosedive in several aspects.

First off, at the door the bouncers had terrible attitudes...They let me in with no hassle because I was with my girlfriend, but I invited people to come celebrate my birthday and people were given problems at the door and sent away!! They were letting in OTHER people (males) that were hopping out of cabs while my friends waited in the cold!! (is this Studio 54 or Bembe?) The place wasn't even crowded, the bouncers were just being really difficult... I came to this place to avoid the meat-packing district drama for a chill night to relax with some friends over drinks and music. Needless to say this ruined my birthday and I will not be going back to Bembe anytime ever.

Beside the pretentious staff at the door, Bembe is seriously lacking in the music department. There used to be live percussion all night to some top choice house and afro/latin-inspired eclectic beats; now replaced with no live drums and reggaeton. Does anyone even listen to reggaeton anymore? I never did and found the music to be particularly bad. The music was the reason I used to come to this place and I'm sad to say that they have really fallen off in this department. If I want to bump and grind I can just hop into my time-machine and go back to any given dance from my grammar-school years...

It seems to me that Bembe is following in the footsteps of Shelter @ Greenhouse and a few other clubs, which used to be all about the music and are now bottle-peddling, money-hungry, poor excuses for nightclubs.

The good vibes of soul and love are lost, and while you will find people dancing, there are no REAL dancers on the floor like there once was. I'm so sad to see that the vibe is lost from this place I can't begin to describe it. Bembe was the place I used to count on for these things and now it's like an old friend has gone and passed...

Way too hot, African? World? – This place has a decent vibe, but the one thing I'll tell you is that it was HOT as hell, literally, and very crowded. I started sweating the moment I walked into this place. I know that when people are hot they buy more drinks, but come on guys - get some fans or something. I know its supposed to be African themed, but we don't have to feel like we're standing right on the equator.

Hot & Sweaty – Great place to bump & grind, and work out a sweat. Once you step in, you absorb the upbeat energy and you can't help yourself but to shake those hips to the floor shakin' dance beats. Oooh, and the mojitos are dangerously good!

Conjures up my feminist side – The rating "average" wouldn't quite describe it because it has some great pros but also some pretty serious cons. The music is great, especially the live factor. Creative drinks and all that. It's also quite smoke-friendly downstairs, but I won't go into any of that because I'm sure it's been covered. What I didn't see anyone mention though is the obvious - Bembe is the epitomy of a meat market, in a bad way. It's a very old school, 50s inspired meat market. Many people will tell you not to dare going there as a woman alone on a Saturday night. I have, and still do occasionally. Let's just say many men have been confused by that. (A lot of drama.) Can we please get more ballsy women in there to introduce their sorry asses to the twenty-first century? I'm tired of doing that alone.

Go to Bembe – A jewel of a find. I hosted a bachelorette party last night (saturday) and all of us had so much fun. I spoke with the owner a couple of times before the party and though they don't technically "rsvp" tables, he was very accomodating and professional in making sure I got a table for the group before they opened the basement (they let me into the basement before anyone else to set up a table). Even though we were a group of girls dancing with no care, the guys around us were all respectful and fun. No sleaze in the place. In fact, the staff are all such sweethearts and genuinely wanted to make sure the atmosphere was safe and fun for women. Great music and vibrant crowd. Crowded but not shoulder-to-shouldder. Only place I've been to recently where as many guys as girls were dancing and just having fun. The live percussionists were actually good and sounded like they had been doing it for years. I was going to host the party at a spot in meatpacking but I am so glad I did not-- here, there were no pretensions, tunnel/bridge, boring scenesters with no personality. I can't say enough good stuff about bembe. Definetly a breath of fresh air in the city. Thanks so much bembe for a flawless night!

Island soul infuses this earthy spot known for live drumming and potent drinks. – The Scene
This two-level South Williamsburg lounge has the rustic air of an out-of-the-way Caribbean dance hall. Talented nightly DJs, often joined by live percussionists, spin Brazilian, Afro-Latin funk, rock and reggae tracks that saturate both floors through an excellent sound system. The main room is furnished with a long, cushioned banquette, woven-straw chairs and a festive hammock; exposed brick and richly crafted wood walls hold Cuban photos as well as nooks for candles, incense and instruments.

The Draw
Coasting on vibrant tunes, a lively, sociable crowd mingles at the bar and spills into the large, poured-concrete rec room below. Guava margaritas, potent rum punch and dessert-like capetas (with fresh coconut milk, sweet condensed cream or honey, fresh coconut meat, coconut rum and fragrant guarana powder) keep the buzz going strong.

amazing night at bembe – after hearing great things about this place, we decided to check it out for ourselves. it not only lived up to the hype but exceeded my expectations. the music was hot, and everyone was dancing up a storm. the drinks were cheap (6 bucks for their signature cocktails). the crowd was diverse and non-pretentious. this club rivals any club in manhattan. the only cons are that it's in a slightly random location and kind of hard to get a cab afterwards, so make sure you put the number of a cab company in your phone!
