Best Fat Tuesday Party – Looking to celebrate Mardi Gras West of the Mississippi? Town Hall knows how to throw one. Town Hall's Fat Tuesday annaul party is the best deal, with the best food. Walk into the oyster station, for all you can eat, then hit up the bar for a delicious Hurricane and stroll over to the various food stations that include BBQ, fried chicken, gumbo, cornbread and anything else your Cajun heart desires. A great time, with great entertainment and a great value...buy tickets upfront before they sell out. And every year they do.
Would you like some SALT with that? – I really wanted to like this place. No, I really wanted to LOVE this place as it came highly recommended by my boyfriend who said he ate the best pork chop of his life here ( and he doesn't like pork).
The decor is nice, the vibe is great and the service is good. So no complaints there.
The low rating comes from the fact that my pork chop was completely over-salted. I like salty food but I stopped eating after 3 bites and downed a half litre of water (no exagerration) in 30 mins. I should have had my order re-made but I didn't want to be a pain ( I know, it's silly that I didn't want to be a pain and here I am complaining!) It's too bad bc I could tell that underneath all that salt, the flavours were amazing. Also, having read the reviews on Citysearch, there seems to be a large number of ppl who have had the same issue. I wish someone in their kitchen would read the reviews and remedy this.
Had the key lime pie for dessert and it was alright if not a bit too sweet but maybe that's only bc the main was too salty.
Will go back and order the pork chop again and hope for better luck ( I'll probably place the order with an "easy salt" request!)
Salty and occasional snotty waiter – First time at Town Hall for my wife and myself:
Two cons: 1) one main course (with curry sauce) was unbearably salty; 2) the waiter came with an attitude that may be suitable for a Castro night club, but decisively not for a heterogeneous clientele.
Minor con: noisy (lots of crammed up loud "fairly-elegantly-dressed" people).
Two pros: 1) Food (Appetizers were fine; chocolate dessert was overall good: bottom crust was lousy; 2) white fish with asparagus sauce was very tender and not too salty); 2) bus-boy (Mexican young man) was friendly and professional (unlike the African-American waiter).
We rate the restaurant low for the unpleasant service (although a couple of other lady waiters came across as professional) and the unbearably salty dish. When spending $100 for two (plus tip) we ask for a far better service without risk of an unexcused flop on a main course.
Question: With all the unemployed people around, why don't they find better waiters?
Suggestion: Replace snotty waiter with bus-boy.
Dry chocolate cake – Went there for dessert and a glass of wine. The mint ice cream was good but the chocolate cake was very dry.
I don't understand why citysearch is making me write a review that is longer than 100 characters or why they won't let me delete this. Annoying.
Good food – Very good service, food was good, price was a little too high.
I would recommend it only for special occasions.
Great Food, Great Price, Wonderful Place – We loved the hominess of the place. The food was modern comfort food. Service was very good. We really enjoyed ourselves.
We liked it! – Family came in from out of town and picked Town Hall for a dining spot. I can say that none of us were disappointed. Our reservations were for 8:30pm on a Thursday evening. We were promptly seated and were wonderfully attended to by the staff. One nice thing about our experience is that we never felt hurried. We enjoyed our cocktail and were allowed to catch up with each other and choose our dinner at our own pace. We had oysters and salads for starters....no complaints. We moved on the the Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Risotto and a Rib Eye Steak. We also added a couple of bottles of the Meritage Ramey Claret to round out our dinner. I think the words to describe our meals were, "fantastic", great flavors, "good portions". The bottom line was that there wasn't a complaint to be heard. The servers were attentive without being overbearing. We even had a celebrity sighting. Jacques Pepin the well known chef was dining just behind us. That says something about Town Hall.
In response to marinmezz: – I was planning to write a review of my Friday night dinner at Salt House anyway, but after reading the 7/28 posting by marinmezz, I am even more inspired to do so!
Yes, our table spilled red wine on the bag. We offered to pay for the purse and provided our contact information on the spot. The guys at the table were very gracious and we hoped the incident would end at that. Unfortunately that was not the case.
When marinmezz got back to her table, she stood up and yelled "Who the #@!* spilled wine on my bag!".... We again apologized and explained the situation, but it seemed to do no good. The owner tried to help and took her over to the bar area to talk with her, but she was having none of it. When she got back to her table, she continued to make snide comments about "how rude and careless" we were and that we had better learn manners. We tried to apologize yet again and kept saying it was a mistake, and she replied "the only mistake was you being born."
I had it at that point and even offered to write her a check on the spot to please put this behind us, but she would not calm down. At that point, the owner came back and asked their group to leave. We were surprised, but grateful. The bag was not a family heirloom, nor did she pay thousands of dollars. I understand her being upset, but she took it to quite the extreme.
The staff apologized to us and the other diners. The service was excellent, the food was amazing, and we were happy to go back to our meal. The biggest surprise of the evening was a good one -- Salt House comped our entire meal... everything was on the house. Of course we left a generous tip and will certainly be back with more friends... and no spilled wine!
Thank you to a great staff and co-owner Doug Washington... truly great customer service. Thank you to all the other diners that had to unwittingly share in this event. We appreciate your support!
A Bit of a Disappointment – I was very excited to try this restaurant after all the rave reviews. I left the restaurant a bit underwhelmed. The food was good but I think the night was dampened by the service. The waiter for my table was very inattentive. We had to ask for things like bread even though the other tables got theirs without any prompting. He never checked in on us throughout the entire service. We received more attention from the busboys than the waiter. We had the veal meatballs, which didn't taste any different than the frozen ones you can get at Costco. The fried squash blossoms and the tuna tartare with fried green tomatoes were tasty. For dessert, I enjoyed the butterscotch creme. I think I'll return but just be prepared for lackluster service.
Poor Service and Direspectful Manager/Owner – Poorest Service in San francisco 07/28/2007 Posted by marinmezz
The owner of Town Hall also owns the SaltHouse, the continuing of bad service at both his establishments is appalling.....
I've never had poorer service in San Francisco than at these two establishments....."After our second course my friend and I returned from the ladies room to see that our table had been reset for another group of four and we were moved to another table for four. It made no sense to me to be misplaced during our last course to another table that could have accommodated the new party. Secondly, upon returning from the ladies room I found that my favorite custom handbag had been ruined by a careless customer one table over for us that spilt red wine on it. Although I guess he apologized to my boyfriend for it I received no apology and it wasn't until I was visibly upset did the manager come over ask me to leave my table and took me off to the corner like a kid in trouble and tell me that he had insurance to cover it. Back at the table the feeling of being completely disrespected and having my property destroyed overwhelmed me and I started to cry. The owner/manager came over and asked us to leave as I was disturbing other guests. He wouldn't let us pay our bill he stood there until our party collected our things and walked us out not caring at all to hear my side of the story. I've NEVER been treated this way before. It was embarrassing and rude and I will certainly never return to that establishment. I had a lunch reservation at 1pm Monday at the Salthouse that I will definitely be cancelling. If you want to be treated like a human being I would suggest never calling or eating at this restaurant. "
