Worst bar in Shadyside – I will never go to the WP Tavern again and I have only been there once. They have put zero effort into atmosphere, music, no creativity whatsoever in menu drinks or drink specials. It seems that the only goal the staff has is giving patrons as much alcohol as possible. The screwdriver I ordered tasted like pure alcohol with a splash of slightly fermented orange added. The barstaff is apathetic-most likely tired of dealing with drunk customers to the point that even dignified patrons are treated with suspicion and disdain. In addition-as a homeowner in the area I am constantly hearing complaints from my neighbors about underage teens that have been served (and overserved) throwing up/peeing in their lawns.A few weeks ago a drunk driver that had been overserved there crashed into two parked cars on our street damaging property and endangering their own lives and others.Perhaps if you are just interested in getting drunk this will be an enjoyable spot for you however I recommend exploring some of the restaurants and bars on Ellsworth, highland or walnut street that have creativity-fantastic menus and unique atmospheres. It used to be a cool place until... – I used to hang out at the WPT about 3 nights a week. That was until the bar management changed hands and things went down hill. The good bartenders were fired and the prices were raised. I went from hanging out there 3 nights a week to not being back in almost a year. Although they do have great sink wings :)
Great customer service – bar maids are very friendly, and attentive. food is great, especially the wings and the quesadilla. mixed drinks are too expensive for the small glass that they use. you gotta get there early to get a seat., I would say between 7:30- 8:00.
Fire your staff and sell your liquor license to someone who knows what to do – This bar is awful. I have been giving them chances for the last six months. I have come to expect a bar with very little standing room, and about a 95:5 man to woman ratio, and poor service. I was recently shorted 10$ by a male bartender (12/29/07). Bars like this should be held to the same standards as San Francisco back alleys. For 15$ or more all you see is men and you leave with a bad taste in your mouth.
Nice – The William Penn Tavern is nice. Also the Food is AMAZING! At the Wpt there are many nice tv as well as two megatouch's and a dart board. It is nice to get a girl late at night and the people there are very nice.
One of Best All Around Bars in Shadyside – This is a great bar and I frequent it quite often. Very good bar food-I always get a burger b/c they have "white american" cheese and while the sandwiches do not come with fries, a side order is enough for 2 or 3. I have never gotten fries that did not taste like they came right out of the fryer. Hot and delicious! Beer selection is good. If there is a drink special then the prices are great, otherwise okay. Specials tend to be the traditional Miller Lite or Yuengling which is unoriginal but better than nothing. Crowded on the weekends but not unbearably so. The back tiki area is a nice change of pace. Crowd is 20 somethings but happy hour tends to be less "upscale"--I have gotten creeped out once or twice by highly intoxicated middle aged men. Bartenders and staff are approachable and competent.
This upscale Shadyside sports bar scores points with both guys and girls. – The Scene
William Penn Tavern bills itself as "eclectic." The place may have all the trappings of a jock hangout--dart boards, a foosball table, video poker machines, loudly televised games, and plenty of Steelers memorablia--but it doesn't ooze machismo. And since it's in touch with its feminine side, this joint has batted 1000 with everyone from football fanatics to Walnut Street shoppers since its 2002 inaugural season. The bar itself is small and sometimes crowded, but ample seating is available throughout. Clink bottles at one of the long tables or snuggle with your date on a small perch by the window.
You don't have to sacrifice quality to eat cheaply. Tantalizing smells wafting from the kitchen announce some of the best pub fare around: burgers, sandwiches, nachos, salads and various deep fried appetizers. The bartenders can refill your beer glass faster than you can holler, "Touchdown!"
