Penitentiary on the Canal – This is a classic example of urban planning. Aside from the mostly silent people doing the ambulating, the place is lifeless. No cozy cafes, no taco stands, no curiosity shops. Since you look mostly at blank buildings as you stroll, the canal might just as well have been built in a penitentiary. The nearby White River slices through Indianapolis, and it is barren of waterside restaurants or virtually anything else of interest. Planning and zoning in American cities have replaced spontaneity with sterile habitats that value order over life. Americans hate surprises.
downtown canal – The first place I took my wife on our first date was the Canal. From that day on we hardly spent any time apart. I really think it set the tone for our romantic evening. A great place to impress a date, not to mention first kisses.
Editorial Review – Within a state park at the city's epicenter, inline skaters, romancing couples and dog walkers escape their urban blues.
Living on the Canal – I am one of the fortunate ones that call the Canal home. Many in Indy are in awe when they learn that I live on what is the city's best attraction. It is wonderful to be in a place that people come to for fun and relaxation and never have to leave. Even the ducks stay through winter!
Indy by the Canal – The Canal in Indianapolis is the best free public place in America. The city has recovered blighted areas of the city and transformed them into a redevelopment area with stores, high-density private condominiums, a museum and plenty of attractions including several monuments to our war heroes. This is what I call true integration of solid development in the context of nature preservation and enhancement. Go Indy!
Hoosier Pride – What a great City.... The Canal is but one of the many charms of this great City. When ever I travel I allways brag up Indianapolis. as to how clean it is, what is going on with the downtown.ect.And usualy get a nice responce back, like yes it is a very nice City. one of the best they have seen. ect.
You Can on the Canal – The best for exercise, star gazing, romance, family fun, etc. all in one place. The Canal is Beautiful! A must see.
stroll through time... – The Canal downtown offers a chance to visit the Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial, the new Indiana State Museum, an IMAX theatre..
So many things to do... rent a bicycle and explore from the Indianapolis Memorial (for the ship which sank at the end of WWII), almost to the Indianapolis Zoo.. How far do you want to walk? With a short walk, you can sample history, get a bit of exercise or with a longer walk, you can splurge with time spent at the Eiteljorg museum, the walking path at White River State Park...
Many festivals are held at the White River State Park. The canal walk is a romantic place to stroll after a concert, or before the fireworks.
gorgeous site! – downtown on the canal during the evenings is such a gorgeous site. its so romantic to take a lover too. so beautiful that you'll be awe-struck with its night beauty and lighting.
Go see it already! – The ever-expanding canal is one of Indianapolis's little known free assets. It's beautiful day or night. Parking in order to get to the canal can be an adventure, but too many people haven't yet experienced our canal walk.
