1950s diner fries up fast-food classics 24 hours a day. – In Short
Entering the clean, bright interior is like stepping into an "Archie" comic book. Hurrying across white- and black-checkered floors, staff in crisp white shirts and paper hats take orders, polish chrome and shuffle between booths and the full-service counter. Middle-American diner standards dominate the menu--pickle-covered steak burgers, chili cheeseburgers and thick shakes. Healthier options include chicken, chef and taco salads.
This may be the worst Steak 'n Shake on the planet. – Let me begin by saying I love Steak 'n Shake. My wife and I have been "Cuisin the Steak" since about 1970. One of our favorite date places was the old Steak 'n Shake on US 92 east of the Daytona Speedway. We would stop for breakfast on the way to the beach and then again for dinner on the way home. Since those days we have eaten in 100s of Steaks all over the US
Generally we have seen the chain go down hill, mostly in service and cleanliness. This restaurant on East 82nd Street is the absolute worst. We stopped in one evening about 10:00 PM for a quick late dinner, there was only one other customer in the restaurant. There were two wait staff persons, at least two cooks and a manager. We seated ourselves and then waited 15 minutes before a waitress came to our table. At that time she brought water and said she would be right back to take our orders. We did not see her again for almost 30 miinutes. We caught the other waitresses eye, and she said she would get our waitree. All along we could hear people talking back in the kitchen, cars coming and going through the drive though, etc. But no waitres. Finally after getting up and going to find the manager he said he would get our waitress. We could hear him yelling at her. So by the time she did get to us she was in a really bad mood. She did take our order - finally.
Another 20 minutes later and the order came - incomplete and wrong. Another 15 minutes and the missing/incorrect items were replaced. We ate and got up to pay, a ten minute wait. We probably should have left earlier, but the whole thing had become like the comedy of the absurd and we were really curious to see how bad it could get.
So all in all we were there almost 2 hours, spending less that 15 minutes eating, and the rest of the time waiting for badly and incorrectly prepared food.
There are many good Steak 'n Shakes in Indy, try either one of the ones on 96th street, they are both good, but stay away from this one at all costs.
