horrible service! – I don't think that I have ever had a good experience here. Why do I keep going you ask? Well I live in the neighborhood and since I can walk there it's a matter of convenience, desperation for coffee or trying to give my local cafe another chance. It's almost like they hire rude people on purpose. No greeting, smile, eye contact etc..slow ass service even on a slow day; I have waited as long as 8mins for a Chai tea!! (owner made) this happened at night and I was the only one at the counter.I figure it was around 8mins since the performer that night sang through two songs!!! It's Chai not espresso!! All you have to do is steam milk and pour! I have never received a warm greeting at Butter. Early one morning My husband and I were the first customers of the day and we didn't even get a simple "Good Morning" or "hi". I've worked as a barista before so maybe that's why I have my expectations but I would never treat customers like this! It's really a bummer that we can't support/enjoy our local coffee shop.
HAIR AND FLIES ON FOOD! OWNER & STAFF DIDN'T MIND! – I just got back from my walk to (and quickly from) Butter. Let me tell ya, I'm never attempting to eat there again. I wanted to contribute to the Eating for Art opportunity today (a percentage of participating local restaurants' proceeds from today will go to neighborhood art programs), but I'll need to go somewhere else other than butter - someplace that's sanitary.
I walked in and scanned the pastry case for their "Award-winning eclairs." As I ordered from the girl behind the counter (they don't wear name tags) I noticed a fly sitting on a pile of scones. I told her there was a fly on the scones, and she simply says, "Okay" and continued ringing me up, just like that.
I headed slowly out the door with my eclair hoping she would release the fly out of the pastry case - she did no such thing. She just ignored it and went about her business.
Do you guys know that when a housefly lands on our food, it regurgitates on the food? The digestive juices, enzymes, and saliva in the discharge begin to break down and dissolve the food. The fly can then suction up the liquid food with its sponge-like mouth parts and its proboscis. Flies are also known to lay eggs on food.
I walked outside and spooned a little of the custard with my finger into my mouth. As I reached into the bag for some more I saw a dark hair in the custard! Yuck!
I went back in and told a girl behind the counter (it was a different girl this time) and she simply asked, "So do you want another one?" There was no way I was going to eat anything from that place, so I asked for my money back.
The owner was listening into this interaction and simply went about his business without saying a word of apology or embarrassment. In fact, a moment later he was recommending pastries from the same case to another customer! Ugh!
It's no shocker there's hair and flies and god knows what else on their food when the owner and staff are as careless as they are. It's a little TOO organic in there if you ask me, lol!
*Notice the review on Google titled "Awful!, Awful, awful, awful!!" also mentions the flies in the pastry case. Gross!
Favorite coffee shop in South MPLS – Butter is so sunny and warm and I just had to respond to the negative comments. Sometimes it gets really busy, so things move a little slow sometimes, but that's okay with me. And while I've only had good experiences with the employees there, no place has 100% happy employees 100% of the time.
For some background: Dan, the current owner, bought the place about two years ago, so one of the comments was actually about the previous owner (who, incidentally, now owns Urban Bean on Bryant). Dan is a really sweet guy who has made friendships with many customers like me who come in about every day. The owner has worked hard to find compostable products (cups, lids, utensils...) and right now, about the only thing that goes in the actual trash at Butter is the foil around little pats of butter. The scones are incredible... they are reasonably priced for their size and are made fresh every morning. The coffee is good and all fair trade, organic, and locally roasted. Some of it is even delivered only on bicycle. Don't look this place over!
We were going to go... – Thanks for the reviews. We were planning to try this place but after reading the reviews we're sticking with The OPH. Thanks for saving us a long drive and paying a bad man to stay in business.
no thanks. – Super rude! I stopped in to get a dessert and the man working was all snotty! I just cannot understand why someone would be like that. I was friendly and everything, and just really got attitude - like maybe I didn't quite understand how cool they all are, and please don't talk to them. Sad. Unhappy. Oh, and also, the cupcake was all dried out.
Fine, if the owner's not working – If you happen to go, avoid the owner or expect to be treated very badly. Tried to get breakfast there but made the mistake of sitting at the counter and placing my order, instead of ordering at the cash register as is the protocol. The owner took my order. When it never came up, he told me it was my fault, and that I hadn't actually been sitting there for 40 minutes. The fare looks good. Never managed to try it.

When the neighborhood bakery Sweetski's closed in 2003, regulars mourned the loss of some of the best baked goods in the Cities. Thankfully, those legendary eclairs can still be found at the Wedge and a few other places. But they're still available in their original home, aptly renamed Butter and reincarnated as an urban coffeehouse decked out with brushed steel, sharp corners and tortured art that don't quite mesh with the sweet and comforting pastry menu.
Local baker and Sweetski's founder Stacy Sowinski won many hearts with her eclairs--airy, chocolate-drizzled shells housing heaps of incredible vanilla cream filling. All her pastries--from hearty, salty biscuits to fancy turnovers that flake apart layer by layer--are on the menu at Butter. Forget heart-healthy--this menu is all about taste. For those resisting the call of the sweet tooth, soups such as lentil, spinach, and bacon stew or hearty vegetarian chili are also excellent.
