This place is closed. We went there a few years ago for my husbands birthday and loved it. We now live around the corner and noticed a few months ago that it has closed.
Horrible Place to eat! – In all honesty this place is managed very poorly, the food was repulsive and it's completely over priced. Why is this place still in business I'm not sure! The person who took my order, messed up my order, and did I get an apology no, the server took forever to bring out my food for the second time, and no it was that busy. The manager didn't even bother to come to our table an offer us an apology, minutes later guess what I got a very upset stomach first and last.
Get you act together, offer better service, and change your menu. The restaurants is horrible.
Don't waste you time going.
This festive B.Y.O.B. storefront draws Latin-craving couples with warm ambience and lovingly made cuisine. – The Scene
Bold yellow, orange and red walls, metal sunburst mirrors, and a splashy Latin-themed mural enliven this cozy, candlelit room a block south of the Sheridan El stop. The small, open space hums with traditional music as couples and groups settle in at scattered tables; friendly servers keep things flowing smoothly.
Caliente's traditional Latin plates are simple and satisfying, with fresh ingredients and full, clean flavors. Complimentary chipotle-rubbed bread paves the way for delicious starters like moist, falling-apart tender pork tamales, zesty tequila-marinated shrimp and flaky empanadas stuffed with sirloin, potato, or savory-sweet guava. Tacos stuffed with delectable carne asada or slow-roasted pork make a great main plate; more sophisticated entrees include rich, lovely goat cheese- and poblano-stuffed chicken breast and seafood enchiladas in sweet-hot plum jalapeno sauce. To top it all off, chewy caramelized plantains with dulce de leche ice cream--a decadent treat.
Must try! – Even in Chicago it can be hard to find a BYOB that has great food, great service and great atmosphere. I can count them on one hand, and Caliente is one of them. It is small inside, so you may not get a table right away, but it's worth the wait. We had the pork tamales and emapanadas as appetizers and really loved both. Over the course of a few visits, we've now had most items on the menu (which is small but great) and all dishes have been wonderful. Fast service, but not rushed....attentive. GREAT salsa on the table with cactus in it- thought I wouldn't care for that as I'm a somewhat "picky eater" I'm told, but I LOVE it. NO complaints. Highly recommend.
Poorly managed – I arrived for dinner around 5:20 on a Friday (I had called ahead earlier in the week and was told they would open at 5:00). When my wife and I walked in, they were still setting up tables and we were told that the kitchen wouldn't be open for at least another 45 minutes. When I told the person (manager?) that I had called and was told they would be open at 5:00, he basically shrugged and said that the cook was late. Ruined our night as we had other time-sensitive plans. No real apology was offered, but he said if we wanted to stay and wait we could have a free dessert.
Well we looked at the (very small) menu, and it definitely didn't seem to be worth the wait. Also, BYOB at this place means all they offer is water. And there is no AC. And the bathroom was filthy.
All in all, not a good experience
Mucho Perfect-O! – We happened upon this spot last night, everything was perfect. From our service (from the owner) to the food, to the ambiance.. from beginning, middle and end everything was excellent. The chicken with pumpkin mole was amazing, a perfect blend of spices not too hot but will let you know it's there..the seafood tacos were excellent along with the pork tamales. This restaurant is a breath of fresh air, with great ambiance, food and service.. you can not go wrong. It's always so wonderful to support self-owned restaurants in our city, they're the ones with character and passion and it shows! Caliente is also opening up a second location to look out for! I highly recommend Caliente as you will not be disappointed!! Thanks Vicki!
Excelente! – Word will not do justice to the chef's creative culinary delights! The comfortable, yet spicy atmosphere and the exquisite, detailed service was more than a customer could ask for. My birthday was beyond memorable as each dish came out perfectly executed and did its number on each person's palate. Highly recommended dishes include the paella with seafood, the citrus steak, and the empanadas..don't forget to bring your own wine and save a lot of room for dessert..arriba arriba!
