bad customer service – I also experienced poor customer service at McLain's a few montha ago. I had ordered a cake from there during the week and was set to pick it up at noon on Saturday. I was out Saturday morning running errands with my infant daughter and around 12:25 got a call from my husband on my cell phone saying that a lady from McLain's had called and sounded annoyed and said I was suppose to pick up my cake at noon and someone needed to get there immediately to pick it up b/c they were trying to close. I know I was a little late, but geesh. I raced over there and was there by 12:35. The sign on the door said they were open until 2pm. I believe it was the owner who helped me when I got there, and older woman with glasses. I said I was there to pick up my cake and she rolled her eyes, I apologized for being late, she didn't say one word, I said thanks at the end of the transaction, still not one word. She didn't say one word to me the entire time she ran me up! No hello, no it's ok, no you're welcome, nothing....all I got was an eye roll. The cake was good, but I won't go there again because she was so rude. Mean, old lady.
McLain's has gone down hill.... – After being a loyal customer for as long as I can remember, I will no longer shop at McLain's Bakery after a recent experience. During this recent visit, wherein I purchased $85 worth of baked goods for a family who had just lost a loved one, I was shocked and appalled by the horrendous customer service rendered by none other than the OWNER! I had pre-ordered 4 dozen cookies for the family, and upon arriving to the store, decided to add a few more items to my order. I ordered an assortment of rolls and began looking at the Valentine cookies as I was planning to order some for the children of this family. I realized that the owner was placing the rolls into bags, so after apologizing for the late request asked that they be placed in a box and explained where I was delivering them. She was upset with this request even though she had only put six rolls in a bag. She rolled her eyes and huffed. It ended with me being the person to place the rolls in the box.
I was born and raised in Kansas City and McLain's Bakery goods have been a long standing part of my family's traditions. Not only did we have them every Easter and Christmas, my mom would keep our freezer stocked with them. However, I shared this experience with my mom, my seven siblings and friends and learned that not only had many of them also received poor customer service at McLain's, most agreed that the quality of the baked goods has declined as the prices have gone up.
I know that the bakery was recently (within the past 5 or so years) purchased by a Brookside couple. They may have bought the name, but they have not lived up to the standards set by the original owners who started the bakery in 1945.
Although I strongly believe in supporting local businesses, I will no longer support McLain's Bakery.
Nicest owners – We called McLain's long distance from Colorado with an unusual request: deliver a large gift of "comfort foods" to an address 30 miles away from the bakery, in time for the funeral of our boss's mother. Not only did the nice couple who owns McLain's go over all the options of what would be good to include, but they delivered it on time and with a note explaining who it was coming from. They were kind and understanding and the fresh-baked goodies were a huge success. It couldn't have worked out better.
One of the Best – McLains has been in Waldo as long as I can remember and I'm 52. Old world pastries, rolls, cookies, brownies , cakes and cookies. This is not the place for whole wheat bread or pesto tomatoe frocaccia,. Their sweet rolls are an institution and without peer. The new owners and making a few changes and I hope they move carefully. You can't find this type of product anywhere elese in the metro area. Prices have gone up in recent years but still very far for what you get. Holidays are very crowded!
One of Kansas City's oldest bakeries offers the finest in drippingly delicious baked goods. – In Short
While this well-known bakery has been serving doughy treats since 1945, Don and Patricia Peattie gained ownership in 2001. Cookies and pastries are baked fresh daily without preservatives for walk-in and corporate customers, wishing to treat their clients. For those over the age of 100, don't miss out on a free birthday cake, complete with candles and personalization.
What I think – I think McLains bakery is a wonderful place. They have some of the best pastries, and its a good place to take the whole family. The employees are nice and respectful.
