You got food poisoning because I know for a fact that they deep freeze their tuna for months and sometimes years before they serve it..
husband gets sick off tuna roll and they told us to f off – We dine at Bar Masa 3 or 4 times a week. Mainly because we live in the building and DID love it. a few days ago my husband got violently ill of spicy tuna roll which has turned into a infection. We absolutely know it was that and doctor took test. I spoke with Bar Masa about this and they basically told us to F off and we were liars. I can tell you I did not expect this, especially for people who spend $40,000 a year with them and have friends that do also!
I was NOT looking for money or even a free meal...Just copy of inspection report to give to Doctor. They refused (which speaks volumes) It also means that others were probably sick! They have some f-ing ego I tell you that. Especially, in the day of twitter, reviews and etc... They are terrible people and as for Masa Takayama I think he is terrible also. I hope he gets what's coming to him.
Got sick next day – I went to bar masa and got sick (although my friend did not). I threw up the whole day and felt terrible!
It was extremely expensive and I could understand if service, food and ambience was at the level but:
?Most of the staff was not Japanese (only the guy cleaning the table) so that dissapointed me.
?My friend ordered some appetizers for two (to the waiter discretion) and he stuffed us with SO much food that the bill was incredibly high (my friend could afford it but I still thought it was so low class to bring so much food to make some extra money for tip or make the owner a bit richer??).
?The portions were ridiculously small and I definitely was upset when I got a salmon that had meat of the size of a bean.
?The decoration is horrible to be such expensive place. I wonder if the owners want to make these orange bad quality looking fabrics hanging look like what Christo artist did on Central Park few years ago.
?There was bad smell (first sign I should have left!).
I will never go back again, specially after getting SICK! I prefer to go to a less expensive place where more people go and there's fresher food.
Poor experience – I went to Bar Masa with my girlfriend and we wanted some sushi before our movie. Prices are pretty high considering the nominal quality of sushi and the amount, but is expected from Time Warner. I can't hold back. Our experience was terrible. Service was less than expected for the prices we were paying. Waiters recommendations were less than enthusiastic. The spicy cod roe pasta was awful and when we expressed this to our waiter he just shrugged and said "sorry" and even charged us. So apathetic. They delivered dessert that was meant for the table next to us and then finally when we were leaving none of the staff or hostess even acknowledged us. They seemed like the didn't know what they were doing. I take clients to restaurants for a living and I must say I was embarrassed to have taken my girlfriend there.
Expensive! – Hmnn. Well I think the sushi is fresh (The Toro, Toro Tartareand and Zuke Tuna Steak are delicious) but nothing spectacular. Yes you are here to see stars like Cindy Crawford but since I eat a lot of sushi from all over the world- this place is alright in terms of sushi quality.
The downer is the price- you wonder- why is the bill over $200 bucks
finest sushi and excellent service – i recently enjoyed a very good dinner at bar masa and it was way beyond what i expected. the menu is eclectic and offers a nice variety of food. the rolls are exceptionally made and taste fantastic. the sushi and sashimi is very fresh and enjoyable because of the fresh twist the chef adds to that traditional style of sushi dining. for example, i tried basic yellow tail sushi but it was served on a bed of crispy onions with sliced jalapenos. it was quite the amazing burst of flavors in my mouth and i will definitely go back there just to order this. the kobe skewers were simply delectable and had the right amount of zing to the bite. the service was great and our waiter even offered his suggestions on favorite things to eat. if i might suggest you try the traditional california roll but only because it's made with real king crab as opposed to the imitation crab we are all used to. this place is small and they don't take reservations but there is a great bar you can sip a few drinks in while you wait to be seated or you can go outside to the stone rose lounge and enjoy the great view of the city while you sip your drink and wait for your seat at bar masa to be ready. overall, it was a great experience and i can't wait to go back again.
great food, bad service – The food is great. The service? Not so much. I've been here a few times, but the service during my last visit really surprised me. Went here on a Friday night without reservations. They had no tables free. That's fine: I completely understand. They told us we could be seated if we waited a half hour. So we sat at the bar and had a drink. After a half hour we were told the wait would be longer: people were lingering. Also fine: they had reservations and we didn't. The problem was that we asked if we could order an appetizer at the bar and were told "no." If we wanted to eat at the bar, we had to eat at the bar. They couldn't move us when they had tables if we'd already had an appetizer at the bar. That to me sounds crazy. Add a curt hostess and bartender, and I don't think the quality of the food alone (which is great) is enough to justify the prices. Going to a restaurant should be an experience, and I grow weary of restaurants that forget this fact.
food is fine, but too expensive, customer service not up to expectation – Masa's 350 menu is too big a risk, so I tried the bar first before launching into any big project. They said the food is about the same except that the 350 menu is top picks from the chef. The fish is fresh, and wasabi is also freshly made instead of canned powder, but nothing special on the menu. The environment is hip but I prefer more traditional Japanese setting. Service is not very attentive sometimes.
awesome – sure it's expensive
but hey it's new york. plus it's really not that bad
their lamb appetizer was very2 good!!, so was their agedashi tofu and kobe beef with yuzu pepper (yum!)
i was first disappointed when my friend ordered a simple lobster roll, but in fact it was one of the best lobster rolls ever!
dessert was so so
If you cant afford the exorbitant prices of masa? this is as close as one would get. i guess????????? – I hear so much hype about Masa and what a mind blowing experience it is; if eating at bar masa is supposed to be similar? then i have to admit i wasnt at all that impressed. Dont get me wrong, i had a nice prix fix lunch that had a soup, salad and a main course and it was very nice, but that's about it. I just cannot see spending over 300 dollars just for the food. This doesnt include wine or beverages or tip. Im sorry, ive eaten at other restaurants like Nobu and Megu, which is my favorite by far, and much much cheaper and i think the food is after eating at bar masa? just as good if not better.
