Chef Galen Zamarra helms this immaculate West Village jewelbox, where service is perfect and the food follows a cultivated, rustic style. Sourcing from farmers markets and local farms, Mas features black trumpet mushrooms, farm-raised chicken, and Vermont cheeses. The servers are professionally knowledgeable about food and wine to the extreme, with background information about the farms and vinyards items are sourced from. Wines focus heavily on France and biodynamic, organic vinyards.
Perfect place to impress a date or treat yourself to an absolutely delicious dinner, with all the important key words: "local, sustainable..." Prix fixe is the way to go. Must try Yellowfin Tuna l’Occidental appetizer. Drinks taste so refined, yet get you really buzzed.
New Yorkers who consider Blue Hill to be the ultimate expression of twee, refined locavore food have clearly never been to Mas (farmhouse), a very fine, very stylish, and very pretentious restaurant that nonetheless serves some of the best food in the city. The name is cringeworthy, and no one will be getting portions larger than what a well-behaved 9-year-old might expect, but for a certain kind of diner this is an ideal place to experience American food at its best and purest.
Super Duper Super – So super yummy....absolutely perfect!!!
Best Dinner Ever – Had dinner the other day and it was absolutely amazing. Don't go without having the tuna. Be ready for a fabulous dining experience. I will definitely go back.
Absolutely One Of The Best Dining Experiences Of My Life – Having eaten at Mas the other day for the first time, I was a bit baffled by some of the negative reviews. Apparently, the owner chef built the place back in 2004 after leaving Bouley and has been running it since then. Yet one review states that management of the place has changed....odd...Anyway, you can see the care and tenderness he has put into all aspects of the restaurant. The soft shell crabs were absurdly good while the peach crumble with nectarine sorbet and red currants was one of most wonderful desserts I have ever eaten. I dined with two guests and was celebrating an engagement. It was really a special night and can't say thank you enough to everyone at Mas (farmhouse) for making everything perfect.
Salty Food, Non-filling portions, and rude waiter – The 6-course tasting menu is not filling enough. Also, in cases where the cheff's selections were not up to par (2 of the 6 course meal were sent back for being too salty), we were charged for replacement plates, and the obnoxious waiter refused to budge . Two of the 6-course menu were good, and the choreograohed meal delivery was great - for which i gave the 2 stars. Otherwise, this place is not worth it!
Excellent – One of a kind! Food was out of this world!
Finally! – The Emperor Has No Clothes!
This is one of the most overrated restaurants in New York.
Beware – Do Not Be Fooled by these glowing reviews written by the new owners or their friends this is NOT the same restaurant that I celebrated my anniversary in last year.
There is not exactly an "Under New Management" sign on the front door. Was there something wrong with my clothes? (Pucci dress and pumps, not fake thanks). Was I not hip enough? (I was younger by 15 years than the other diners) We were greeted like maybe we were covered in dead fish and brought to a back table by the kitchen door when there was only 10 other people in the restaurant the entire time. I dont expect anyone to remember us from 2008 but we were dressed up and ready to spend money on a nice meal--
you are a restaurant. Get it?
We brought our memory of a romantic meal, some of the best food in Manhattan. The waiter weirdly sold my husband wine before he knew what we were eating, or he thought he had taken our order already. I vote for number two because after an hour when we walked out, and we did walk out, we paid the bartender not him and he didn't exactly chase us down the street for his money (or the other waitress who took our order).
HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS for this mistake!
The appetizer recommended was tuna with brown butter. The tuna was FROZEN in the center. Just guess how much they are charging for this appetizer!!
Forgettable entrees were thrown down in front of us.
"Service" was our water glasses filled again and again...
DON'T GET FOOLED.
At these prices? cynical, cynical, cynical!
Surprised by how good this was – My husband and I went to Mas for a birthday meal. We were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful wood-and-stone accents throughout the restaurant, and how well the tables were spaced. We were seated in the small back alcove room, and it was almost full the whole night. There was always a pleasant hum of conversation but it was never noisy.
The food was excellent. We both had the $68 tasting menu. We each had three dishes plus dessert, starting with an excellent caviar course. My husband also thought his cheese course was outstanding. The supplemental charges for the caviar course ($9 each) and his cheese course in place of dessert ($3) were very reasonable.
My only complaint, and it's not a strong one, is with the service. Although Mas's food rating in Zagat's is equal to the top tier, the service is not. The host who poured our champagne put huge heads of foam on both glasses and slopped drips of wine on the table, repeatedly. Our main waitperson was a little silly and overly friendly in her attempts to 'engage' us. There was a reasonable pause between the first and second courses, but the entree course came much too quickly and they were handing us the dessert menus seconds after the entree course was cleared. Also, the coordination between wine and food wasn't great - our glasses were dry before we were asked if we wanted more, and the glass of wine ordered specifically for one course came a good 5 minutes after the course was served.
Our Favorite Restuarant in New Yoke – In a recent trip to New York we tried Mas for the first time. Our food was incredible. The atmoshere extremely warm - particularily for New York - and the service could not have been better.
Our server had spent time in San Francisco, Chicago and New York at some terrific restuarants including Blackbird in Chicago(another one of my favorites). We let him choose our entire meal and he asked some thoughtful questions and made perfect recommendations!!!
Pretentious and Rude – "I had high hopes for this place.... The food was definitely good, but the service was pretentious and rude. I took my mom there for Mother's Day. Right away the waiter was pretty distant and pretentious but after we ordered it was even worse! We had eaten a late lunch so we decided to just split an appetizer and an entree. Also, she had to drive home after dinner and the wine was $16/glass so we didn't get any drinks. Well, they weren't fans of our order. The waiter said "That's all you want?" and then later in the meal sort of made fun of us for sharing. My mom also saw the waiter go over to the host and tell them we were sharing and they started laughing. The whole rest of the meal, he was totally rude to us. I could understand having a little attitude if we were taking up a whole table at prime time and only ordering drinks. But we basically each had a meal's worth of food and eating at 6:30pm when half the tables were empty. If a restaurant frowns upon sharing, they should mention it on the bottom of the menu. I still think that's a bit pretentious, but I respect the directness, instead of laughing about it behind our backs (or more like in front of our faces.) Restaurants should appreciate their customers, not make them feel unwelcome. You can get food as good at places that are fun, upbeat and welcoming."
