disappointed – Firstly, there are a lot of mixed reviews here and it might well indicate the night and the waiter. So here was our experience and it is best to be both positive when due and critical when not. The place is lovely inside and out. It is in a great spot which is probably why, despite some of the really really bad reviews, it still packs them in. We found the bar downstairs and the bartender, really nice. But we were rushed from our table as they booked another party too soon to allow us to finish our meal completely (desert was given to us the floor up), the waiter was really not great and the food was mediocre at best. Do not go here if you are a non meat eater. In fact, there ware plenty of other uber trendy places that deliver much better on all fronts. My suggestion is to skip this one...

The Bartender Cheated Me – I was at 5 Ninth over Labor Day weekend and ordered a Goose & Tonic. The bartender pretended to pour grey goose but actually topped the drink off with Popov vokda. When I pointed this out to him or should say 'caught him', he scoffed at me, and then poured me a correct drink. It was bad enough that the bartender tried to cheat me, but what it made it worse is that he then decided to make my change his tip... disgusting behavior. New Yorkers are already paying $12-20 bucks for a drink, why cheat them when you're already pushing them to pay premium prices.

Despite the bartender's behavior the place was still a great spot and the DJ was awesome!

Great atmosphere – I brought a date here for a Saturday afternoon brunch. The place has a warm and friendly feel to it. We sat in the outside garden under some shade. Our waitress was in-training, but lots of fun and we both learned what "manchego" is. (a delicious spanish cheese that is on one of their crepes).

Our simple salad was just okay. The lettuce was high quality, but there was one added ingredient (similar to an olive) that was strong and killed it for me (just look at all ingredients b4 u get it!). We had some crepes and the smoked salmon club sandwich. The string fries that came with the club were sensational! The sandwich was huge and i thought it could have used more avocado. Crepes were pretty good.

While I thought the service was super-friendly (contrary to other reviews), I admit it that it was slow. So if that typically bothers you, than beware. If it doesn't, than you'll enjoy your brunch.

I'd go back for drinks if i'm in the neighborhood and would consider brunch again b/c if nothing else, the atmosphere is worth it.

Upstairs is the place to be! – I love 5 Ninth. I went on Halloween dressed as Beyonce's Single Ladies with two other girlfriends. We walked right into a party upstairs where they played hip hop and dance music from the late 90's and early 2000's. We danced for hours! Later going downstairs we found a private table area that we dubbed our own where we continued the party with other friends we'd invited. Literally the most unexpected fun we'd all had in a long time. Everyone is friendly, the staff is cool and the vibe is different. I definitely didn't feel like it was a typical venue you'd find in this particular neighborhood. Laid back and no worries.

I went back again for a birthday a few months back and they gave the birthday girl a free bottle of whiskey. Its definitely a place I'll be frequenting this summer. I've never eaten there or have experienced 5 Ninth outside of their nightlife scene, but as far as I'm concerned, its definitely always in my top ten places to stop by.

Great Meal! – I have had dinner twice in a month at 5 Ninth but the first time I went I had a bottle of the Brassfield Eruption and it went so well with the short ribs. So the second time I went to have dinner I was disappionted that they did not have the Brassfield Eruption wine available. So, I instead ended up having a glass of beer over the other wines they had on the list.

Best it's been since it opened. – When it opened, 5 Ninth had two identities: one as a chic gathering spot for a transatlantic crowd, and also a destination restaurant, owing to its critically lauded young chef, Zak Pelaccio. Pelaccio is long gone, and with him, much of 5 Ninth's buzz. But the restaurant remains as pretty as ever, with its three floors and shaded garden. And the food, under Pelaccio pal chef Kevin Pomplun, is as ambitious and eclectic as it's been in a long time. Likewise the wine program, which has expanded out along with the menu.

No need to rush back – I tried 5 Ninth Ave during Restaurant Week with a group of girlfriends. When greeted by the server he insisted that the whole party (there were 10 of us) had to choose between the Pre Fix Menu or order a la carte. Taken back by his lack of personality and charm the group chooses the Pre Fix option. A number of the girls in the group ordered the Salmon entree and specified that they would like it cooked rare. Upon receiving our entrees each and everyone one of us that ordered salmon got a very W.E.L .L cooked piece of fish.

Meh... needless to say, I was not wowed and don't need to go rushing back. The only redeeming part of the evening was the group of people I was with and the lovely garden seating area where we had dinner.

Sand in the Salad!!!!! – I have been to this place several times but only for drinks. I took my date here last week. First I ordered the special i.e oysters and 15 mins later i was told they were out of it. So I ordered a house salad. The salad had so much sand in it that it was inedible. I told the waitress about it ands she apologized and she offered to bring a new one. I said no I don??A?t want to delay out main course. 15 mins later that salad shows up.

The entire process was very frustrating. And in the end we didn?t even get desert on the house or an apology.

This place is good for drinks and the bar upstairs but skip dinner. The food is probably the worst food I have had in along time. The service staff was too over whelmed. Will not go again and will not recommend.

If you need to impress, here is where to go. We had the 4 course meal. Everything was perfect, food, service, ambiance.

Salad, oysters, crispy duck, artisan wild mushroom. Everything spectacular, a wonderful meal.

Service was as good as a choreographed ballet. Each course was served when we were ready.

Go and enjoy a unforgettable meal.

Disappointing – I had Valentine's Day dinner here and it was very disappointing...the tables were jam-packed in our seating area, so it felt like we were at a communal table as opposed to a romantic Valentine's Day atmosphere - we were (and the two tables on each side of us) were almost whispering to have some privacy. The service was very slow (the waiter cited a computer problem but I have no idea how that impacts how quickly he could bring us drinks or a menu) and poor overall (the wait staff didn't clear things after we were done, the waiter's response to our request for a wine menu was to ask us to pick it up from the table next to us where people were dining). On top of all that, the food was mediocre at best, my pheasant entree arrived lukewarm and wasn't very flavorful. The smoked trout salad appetizer was drained in dressing and the trout was dry. I wouldn't go back.
