OMG- Somebody say 'Hole in Da Wall'!!! – Warning: If you think this is an actual lounge, you would be sorely mistaken. Yes, they play cute music, They have, wait let me count: 15-20 bottles of liquor, Nothing on Draft (ha ha), and if you are brave, I mean really brave-you will attempt to order and consume 'chicken and waffles' their most elite dish besides something as ridiculous as 'Soul food sushi', Wow, I didn't know someone could actually pull this off, with about 100 dollar investment and a couple repetitive DJ CD's. Anyway, I would love to continue this horrible and yes, very gracious review but my sweet potatoe fries just arrived and no-they look nothing like the beautiful, thin, flaky, batch of fries I know and love. These are straight Horse Fed Fries, made big for someone with Giant Horse teeth, they look like a cut up apple? WTH
WE LOVE THE DEN! – Me and my Fiance love the Den, the food, the atmosphere, music and neighborhood. The Den's food is delicious. I think we almost had everything on the menu so far. My favorite drink at the Den is the Den Dada, and my fiance's is The Harlem iced tea/Get drunk or die tryin' (it varies). Great place for couples very intimate atmosphere. We celebrated Valentines Day here and We had a great time.
The good, the bad and the ugly – I don't know why I keep going back here, I guess I go every once in a while to remind myself of why I stopped going. While the food and drinks are good, and they do have a good happy hour, the service is horrible, but the last time really did it for me. I called one Friday to make sure there was no cover, they said no cover until either 9 or 10 (don't remember exactly), so the following week I went, got there at 7, and sure enough, the guy at the door was charging $5 to get in. As I stood there waiting for my turn and ready to ask for a manager, the guy at the door was rudely arguing with the man he was helping, telling him he was going to have to wait until he got change....of course. I told the ladies in front of me that I called and they said there was no cover, so they paid and went in and told someone what was going on. As he tried to charge me $5, one of the bartenders came out to him and said "you're charging people?" This guy was clearly trying to get his hustle on at the customers expense when he was only supposed to be checking id's. I stormed in and immediately told my friend to go get his money back. He later came in and caused a ruckus with the bartender, dropping a bunch of money on the floor.
Then, after waiting quite some time for someone to take our order, I finally went up to the bar and asked, "do we order up here or will the server come to the table?" His response was "I guess so" He then said, if I have time to bring it I will. He wasn't mean about it or anything, but still. I could understand if this happened this one time, but they are consistently understaffed. It's Friday night, hire another server! The music is also too loud (before it becomes a "lounge" after 10) and you have to scream at the people you're eating with.
This is one of the many bad service incidents I've had at the Den. Like I said, food and drinks are pretty decent, so if you don't mind BAD service, go ahead...otherwise, stay away!
Hot Hot Hot!!!! Great place to bring a date – I went here with a coworker of mine. We did not expect to have such great food and drinks. The place is a bit small but it makes up for it in food, drinks and ambiance. The crowd is grown and mature. I most def will be going here on the regular.
Don't get thrown into The Den – After seeing The Den featured on G. Garvin's Road Trip, I couldn't wait to visit and experience the Soul Sushi and featured drinks. My husband and I excitedly planned a day in Harlem for my 44th birthday -February 3, 2008. We left Baltimore around 6:00 a.m. and headed to NY. Our reservations were booked for noon for the Sunday Brunch.
Surprisingly, we were informed that the website was not updated, the price increased from $19 to $21 per person, the menu changed, and a new cook (who never worked in a restaurant) started that same day. The greatest disappointment of all, the soul sushi is featured everyday but......Sunday.
After waiting 2 1/2 hours, only two of the six items (fruit and salad) featured on the buffet was ready. Our disappointment sums up to a wasted trip to New York.
I"d like to thank my husband for giving up the Superbowl and traveling a total of 8 hours for nothing.
Best Brunch in NYC! – I have been a fan of the Den for a while now. My girlfriend's and I usually hang out there from time to time. We'll do a Friday or Saturday night. I have had the appetizers and a meal or two and never had a complaint. Earlier today I enjoyed the Sunday Brunch for the first time. I was with my boyfriend and we had a great time. The space was really intimate for a Sunday morning. The lights were really dim with votive candles supplying most of the light. We got there relatively early- 1pm. The brunch is from 12-5pm. We walk in and we were greeted kindly right away. We sat down to enjoy what could be one of the best brunch spots in NYC. Spread out on the bar was an all u can eat selection of two types of chicken, rice, fresh green salad and fresh fruit. But don't eat too much because you are allowed 2 main course choices from the menu. I had shrimp and grits with garlic toast which was delicious. I also had the french toast with fresh strawberries. My boyfriend had fried catfish and grits and also chicken and waffles. You don't get a heaping amount of food on the plate but we left more than full having eaten two entree's and don't forget you can return to the all u can eat buffet again. We also had several mimosa's which were included in the price of $21. With the tax and 20% gratuities it came to just over $53 for the both of us. Everybody looked like they were having a really good time. If you are looking for an intimate spot to bring your man or a few friends this is it. They played good R&B music and we weren't rushed. I do recommend though that you make reservations. I've been to Nolia's Brunch in the village and Copeland's Brunch in Harlem. They don't hold a candle to this! I will return again.
A house party in someone's basement – This is my first time writing a review but i was so dissapointed by the service at the Den that I believe it's my responsibility to warn others. The food was very bland considering the menu is pretty limited and the service did not make up for what the food lacked. We are told to move to different tables (despite that fact that we were in the middle of dining) because larger parties were coming. The manager was unapologetic and became annoyed over our disappointment. He was very rude and unprofessional. The place is a den (one room) but if you are looking for a "house party" (some place small, hot and overcrowded with a rude, obnoxious relative walking around) then the Den is your spot.
Total Shocker – I went to The Den on April 7th, this past Saturday. I have to admit I was forced to go by a couple of my childhood friends. We are all from Florida by way of London England. I moved here a year ago, and have not had a chance to really hang out with my buddies. So they drag me to The Den. I walk in and I thought they were joking. The place was not spacious at all. I did not put up too much of a fight. There were some real attractive ladies inside, so I sat down and we got some food. I had a reggae roll appetizer, and then another one, and then another one. The menu titles are amusing. I also had the Weezy Crabcakes. I thought I was trapped in an episode of "Good Times" or something like that. I noticed by some of the older reviews, some people did not take to this place. I did! I enjoyed the food, and the drinks. My favorite "Tony Montana", which they give you a mojito with a shot of Patron tequila. I floated with these all night. The music was so good and the food and drinks were so great, I did not care how big the space was. It was large enough for me to know I would be coming back. I have to thank my friends for forcing me to try something new. Usually I want to party ONLY in midtown Manhattan, but this place change my mind.
Harlem Nights.... – I am the best friend of Boobiet03 that took her on 4/7/07 to The Den. I have been to The Den a few times. The owner, Josh has really put together an eccletic, different experience. First off, the menu is different. The names of the drinks and also the food is eye-catchy. You have to laugh when you see the names. They remind you of "I'm A Get You Sucka", if you ever saw that movie. It has a 70's feel to this spot. It is architecturally appealing to the eye. The artwork is nice. Exposed brick and a lot of wood and natural tones. I ordered the salmon and I thought it was amazing! I usually order the chicken and waffles but chose to try something new this time. Our reservationist Onya is great and our server Larissa was kind, kept checking on us, made sure our glasses stayed full, was courteous and helpful. The customer service at The Den is a 10+. The place is small but I have to not agree with the other people. It is NOT just a place to get drunk. I had fun. People just moved some of the tables over and had a great time. The DJ was great and the atmosphere is worth checking out. I have never had a bad night at the Den. I have also been during the week, but Saturday is NOW my favorite night. If you would like to know more, you can email me. My name is April.
Hot Spot In The Cut – I went here on Saturday night (4-7-07) for my birthday with my best friend and this place is off the chain! Yes it is small, but once you're in, you're in! The music was crazy hot! The food was fantastic and the drinks were even more off the hook then everything! We had the best hostess, she was on point with everything! Every time we need a refill, she was right there! If you want some good food, drinks, music and a hide away, this is the spot!!
