Holy Mole and Chili Verde – My wife and I stopped by here this last week, and had to come back after a quick trip to the bank for cash. NOTE: Gloria's is cash only, it's worth it though.
Since I had heard good things about the Mole, I went with that while my wife decided she wanted to try the Chile Verde. While we waited we were served a bowl of chips and fresh salsa, both of which eclipsed the flavors and textures of most restaurants offerings. Gloria's chips? They could easily stand on their own without the salsa, which was just extra icing on the cake. Just to make sure we are clear, it was extremely delicious icing...I mean salsa, that stuff was good. Add in the fact she was generous enough to provide a second bowl of each, and I was a happy camper.
Entrees...well, like I said, I had the Mole, and it came out with a small salad, black beans and saffron rice on the side. All of the side items were flavorful, nicely portioned, and perfectly cooked/prepared. My mole? Oh baby, my mole. I have eaten a lot of mole in my life, and this one was honestly the best I have ever had. Smooth, complex, calculated, it was like having an event in my mouth, I could taste all of the ingredients with none of them overpowering any of the others, the way a good mole should be. Under that perfect mole was a perfectly cooked chicken breast, skin on and bone in. From an ease of cooking and eating viewpoint, a boneless skinless breast might be nice, but it would certainly be lacking the flavors.
My wife and her Chile Verde? This came with the same sides, and a wonderful portion of tender cubed pork in a wonderful verde sauce topped with sour cream and cheese. While some verde recipes are too spicy, leaving the flavor behind, this one was ideal with just the right amount of spice and flavors. Again, the perfect balance of ingredients.
All told, the food, the service, and Gloria herself was wonderful, and Gloria's Secret Cafe will be beckoning for us to return in the near, very near, future. All I can say is, I apologize to Gloria for not discovering her secret before now.
Delicious fare from El Salvador – The food at Gloria's is top notch, home cooked food. The pupusas are the best you can get outside of El Salvador.
Service is friendly and efficient. It's usually Gloria herself cooking and waiting tables.

Fantastic food warms my soul.. – Gloria's food is exceptional and filling. Cash only, very cozy, worth every penny. Everyone must try
Loved It. – I went to Gloria's for the first time this week. I had walked past it many times and was always quite curious, but for some reason I never made it in. I was in a hurry & needed food to go, and Gloria was very helpful. She recomended something that would be fast & easy for her to make & let me tell you; it was delicious! I can't wait to go back again; next time I'm taking my husband!
Great for something different – Went to Gloria's today for the first time. It was great! It is a hole in the wall--4 tables total inside with an additional 2 outside. All kinds of kitchy stuff adorns the walls, but it all fits. The menu is tiny, with about 8 items total. But the quality of the food is spectacular. The rice and beans were very flavorful, and the homemade flour tortillas were charred--you could definitely tell they were homemade. The salsa is some of the best salsa I've ever had--so incredibly fresh, with huge chunks of tomatoes, onions, jalapeno and cilantro, and the addition of corn gave it a new nuance of flavor.
The server came and chatted with us, asking where we'd heard about the restaurant. I'm pretty sure she was Gloria. She was very friendly.
This place is great; I will definitely go back.
Best Kept Secret? Not for long – Salvandoran is not Mexican so give this a try for something different! If you want wholesome food that is fresh, surprising and satisfying, even basics like rice and salsa this is the place. My picky husband said the salsa was one of the best he ever had, it was made with tomatos, corn, mango, cilatro, beans, onion. The quality of the food was up there with Pambeche. The ambience is very home spun and exhuberant, decorated with colorful paint by the owner and her daughter, nothing fancy but imaginative and welcoming. The owner came over and chatted with us because she didn't recognize us. The menu is small (about 7 entrees) because she has a small kitchen, so you may not find your favorite Salvadoran dish, but call first and ask. She also has specials on some days. This is a real find.
