Great coffee....horrible service... – I started to go here when I moved thinking YAY support local and indie.
Being from Seattle I know coffee and I know service well the coffee here is amazing ... i love it. Great taste and consistency.
Now to say that I have to say that the staff is so completely rude and look like something crawled up their butt and died. Just ordering a coffee seems to be the largest task you have ever had to ask.
So the review is for the coffee but the staff brings it way way down.
I double heart with an arrow the coffee plant with a smiley – every morning i get coffee. i walk up to the counter, black coffee appears, money changes hands, no words are spoken. in this town is hard to get coffee with out it feeling like being at job interview. plus there are sh1t loads of beautifully sculpted bike messengers all day long. do they ever work?
LOVE! – I go to coffee plant (almost) every morning. The coffee is really great and vegan cinnamon rolls!? Get outta here!
Incredible coffee and scones! – Having read the reviews about the grumpy barista, I just HAD to visit and see for myself. The latte was excellent. The food was a surprisingly delicious! The barista was running the machine and someone else was tending the register. I found them to be polite and even greeted me with a smile! I don't expect banter but I do expect them to be polite and that includes noticing when customers walk in the door. I am returning to Portland next week and will seek them out again. I highly recommend visiting this outstanding venue and avoid the chains! If on my next visit the barista is rude- then I will find another independent coffee house to visit.
Great Coffee! Gluten Free Pastries. – I love the coffee, the service and the atmosphere of this small and charming coffee shop!
But the BEST thing?? The gluten free coffee cakes and cookies. There is no other place like this downtown. Plus, I know they keep the gluten free baking process super legit because one of the bakers has a daughter with Celiac's - so I know they mean business!
Thanks guys! Now I can get a real snack with my morning coffee just like all of my co-workers!
The worst coffee in the world! – This is a friendly heads up for anyone who may become a victim of Coffee Plant. Avoid Coffee Plant like the plague they have the worst coffee in the world. The service is more then less to be desired also, the staff has perfected the art of being complete ashpoles! The food is horrible and most of all they are extremely over priced. There #1 product is coffee and this is where they fail miserably!
Antidepressants for the barista! – Great Stumptown coffee and amazing fresh-baked pastry. Hostile, unpleasant, surly, self-important barista! Obviously the owners appreciate your business because they actually post a sign stating this. I wonder if they know how consistently off-putting and hateful their tattooed barista is! I have to shake off the negativity after every visit.
Best consistent coffee around! – My husband calls me the world's biggest coffee snob. I wouldn't go that far, but what can I say - I like what I like! This place is my favorite coffee place to go to hands down. The coffee is amazing! Never bitter but always strong. Yeah and I second what another review said about the pumpkin muffin, there's nothing else like it around. As far as the service goes - I know almost everyone that works there by name, they know my drink, they treat me great! The thing different about them is that they are real there, not fake. Most of the clientele are loyal groupies.....I love the Plant!
Best of the Indies – I admit it freely that I'm a coffee snob. Can't understand why if you live in Portland with all the DIY coffee shops ANYONE would go to Starbucks or other chains. There are tons of good indie shops in this town with much better coffee than that Seattle company. Coffee Plant happens to be one of the best. Here's why:
First and most important, they make great coffee. Yeah, they serve Stumptown (the best) but they actually pay attention to the quality of their expresso. Try making a truly good Americano...it's actually difficult. These guys do it better than most every other shop out there.
Second, the music. More often than not the Plant is playing something that I've not heard before (I'm a music junkie). Whether retro or new, it's typically good. So much so that you want to stay just for the music. And it's often loud...the way I like it.
Food: try the vegan pumpkin muffin - I think they're made on premises. Not usually a fan of vegan. This thing is addictive.
Final admission: I'm not a morning person. Yeah the "help" may come off a little gruff. I like that in the morning. I really don't want to be chatted up. But I've found (in the afternoon for round 2) when I actually talk to the folks at the Plant, they're friendly, interesting people. Give 'em a try. They don't bite.
I heart Coffee Plant – I was recently out of town for over a week. I usually claim to miss my boyfriend or my dog the most when I'm traveling, but after 10 days of horrid suburban coffee I will admit that Coffee Plant was at the top of that list.
I work about a block away from Coffee Plant, and have a choice of about 8 coffee shops within a block or two. I can always count on great service, coffee and music. I'm there twice a morning, different drinks. They know my first and second order, and take very good care of me when I'm barely awake and functional.
And don't forget to look at what's on the walls when you're there. I've bought art from a couple of different shows they've had hanging. Most recently, one of the baristas was showing her work. I'm now the proud owner of 2 of her pieces.
Mike, the owner, is one of the most lovely people I've met. He's over at his second shop most of the time now and I miss seeing him on a regular basis. But I'm so happy to support his business.
