Southern Food in NW!?! – I grew up in Texas and moved to Portland as an adult. The only thing I miss about the South (other than my family) is the food - and this restaurant goes a long way toward easing that longing. Their mac and cheese, meatloaf, chicken and dumplings, mashed potatoes and biscuits are all made from scratch and are absolutely delicious. ...everything else on the menu is made from scratch, too I think, but I can personally vouch for the above items.
The food is also VERY reasonably priced with specials every day and great happy hour deals.
This is one of the first reviews I've ever given on Citysearch. I'm giving it singularly because I love this place and want it to be around as long as possible. Happy Eating!
Gotta tell ya. I,ve been here three times now and it doesn't get any better. In fact it keeps getting worse. The first time here I had breakfast, not bad but nothing to rave about. The next time I had the sampler plate and chips and salsa. What a mistake. I could have broke a tooth on the over cooked under seasoned chips. The ribs were flavorfull but really dry and the plate came with three other really greasy piles of fried stuff. I figure the price I paid came to about $3.00 per four inch rib. Truely not a good deal. Gave it some time then decided "one more try". Well that one did it, I'm finished, and here is why. I entered and saw 3 couples sitting inside and saw that a few tables were open on the deck, sat outside and ordered rib-eye steak with onion rings and salad with ranch and a cup of coffee, also asked for chips and salsa. Got the salad first, it had some wilted and slimey leaves but even worse you could see the water they used to strech the dressing with because they didn't bother to shake it up. Gross. Got the appetizer at the same time as the steak. Again way over cooked and no seasoned store bought then deepfried tortilla chips. Could have scraped paint with them. Now the real kicker. I don't blame the guy who got the liver and onions just before they cooked my steak but they should have cleaned the grill first!!! There was so much grease and burnt fat on that steak and they way over cooked it. I asked for pink to rare and got med well to well done.Besides tasting like liver It would have been dry except I think the cook dunked it in a bowl of cold vegetable oil and threw it on the grill a second time. As far as the service, well that cup of coffe that was brought out an hour before I left was the only coffe I got. After my outdoor cig. I got tired of waiting for more coffe or at least the bill and decided go inside, there was the waitress, sitting at her own bar watching TV. Like I said----FINISHED---NO MORE TRYS FOR YOU GUYS
Mac-N-Cheese WOW – Greg's has a mac-n-cheese wedge appetizer that is to die for. I have never had them before Greg's and they are awesome. Love the outdoor seating in the summer also.
Really good BBQ – WHAT A KICK A** PLACE! My husband and I went there for dinner and think that the place is awesome! It reminds me of a quaint country cottage with lots of charm! Fabulous out door decks too. My Hubs ordered the BabyBacks and said they were fantastic. I had this chicken dish that has swiss and pineapple on top,mmm mmm mmm! They even knew what an Arnold Palmer was! The waitress was very helpful, and she let us know that the same owners own the Farmhouse next door, so since it was a Saturday night and the kids were at the sitters we decided to walk over and check it out after dinner. To my suprise they were doing Karaoke!! We had such a good time! We are planning my 13 year old's birthday for August and will probably go back to Gregs Backyard. It was a great experience. My thanks goes out to the Waitresses and cooks at the Back yard.
Best Little Backyard in Portland – Wow, I cannot believe I found this "Diamond in the rough" ! This place is fantastic! All of their food is smoked or homemade from scratch!, You couldn't ask, let alone pay for a better meal. The prices are great and the portions are big. Kids are aloud, which is hard to find anymore with a bar like atmosphere. Non-smoking too... I know awesome right? They have a full bar and the wait staff seem to be very knowledgable of specialty drinks, which is definately a plus in my book. Full lottery seperate from the eating area, ( I was able to slip in and win $60.00, yahoooo!) They also have these comment cards which are really cool, you can rate the service and food and atmosphere. We have been there 4 times now, and we have had nothing but good experiences with Carah, Marena, Jackie. They were very attentive without being hovery. We have found our new favorite place to eat, If you havn't been there you really should go. Don't forget to try the mac-n-cheese.!!!!!!!!!! Sincerely, Cooper213mont.
Great food, service and atmosphere – Once again, while leaving Portland, I stopped at Greg's Backyard to have some breakfast. I ordered steak and eggs and asked to have it cooked "between med. rare and med.", which I might add, is not a normal request, and it came out Perfect!
Two eggs over med., grilled onions in my hashbrowns and everything was hot. The other thing I like to order is the breakfast patty sausage. It's lean, moist and very flavorful. The service is exceptional. I witnessed several groups come in for lunch and they were in and out in a very timely manner. The staff is friendly, personable and have a great sense of humor. The atmoshere is warm and very welcoming. My husband and I will definitely continue to make this a part of our itinerary while visiting.
Local Restaurant proves this skeptic wrong – With Portland's hit-and-miss, here today-gone-tomorrow culinary mishaps; I have always assumed it to be safer to simply take my family to a franchised, corporate, flair & buttons type restaurant.
But something about Greg's Backyard caught my eye as I drove by it everyday on my way to work. After seeing the nice outdoor seating and the packed parking lot; I pledged that would be where we go for our Monday night dinner.
We were greeted warmly as we arrived. The clean, calm atmosphere we walked into was very refreshing compared to the loud, hustle-bustle & noise we were used to at the "other" restaurants we have visited. And the big screen flat panel TV automatically put a smile on my kids' faces.
My wife and I enjoyed superbly blended cocktails from the full bar as we all munched on a multi-item appetizer dish that was perfect.
My wife and I split an order of the daily special which was a salmon fish & chips. mmmm...... utterly unique and even better than the local fish & chips I've had in London, England; this was a true Northwestern culinary creation.
My son ordered the pepper steak with fries and a honey-baked biscuit; to die for... I had to taste it as I cut it up for him. The meat was so tender and flavorful, and the shoestring fries were crisp & fresh.
My daughter ordered a burger that was seasoned and grilled to perfection, with a side of mac & cheese that was amazingly some of the best mac & cheese I ever tasted.
Our waitress was the sweetest lady anyone could ask for. We even had management stop by to say hi and ensure we are totally satisfied; this unusually amazing level of service we received was but the mere icing on the cake.
We have found our new "spot" to go out to eat. I just can't wait to go back next week and see what specials are available ! I encourage anyone who can visit Greg's Backyard to do so and see what our true local PDX thoroughfare has to offer.
i love mac-n-cheese – remember when you were i kid and mac-n-cheese was your favorite thing? Well at Greg's Backyard..it still is my favorite thing. A good friend of mine reccomened this resturant to me. And i am so glad they did. I have eaten here 3 times this week and have always been pleased. Try something new every time you go there. Delicious Food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – If anyone is looking for a great family place to eat then i suggest you try out Greg's backyard. The food is terrific. I recommend the Pulled pork, mac & cheese and they also have very good homemade soups!!! The environment is great for families and its very relaxing. The servers are also great. I did not have to wait for anything and they all made my family feel very comfortable and welcome.
Awesome food and service! – One of the best places I've eaten at in Portland. Awesome food and service. The waitress was extremely attentive. The food was amazing. The speed is incredible. I've never had a bad experience here, it's always been 5 stars for me.
The chicken fried steak is the best I've ever eaten. The pepper steak is awesome flavor at a great price. I recommend Greg's Backyard to everyone I know, and I've never heard a disappointed word.
If you're looking for somewhere new to try, I highly recommend Greg's Backyard
