Best japanese all around! – Love their sushi roll. Service was great!
no complain at all – i been living in japan for ten years and it was the most tradition sushi I ever tasted since back in town.the atmosphere and decoration was so comfortable, strongly recommend to everyone who love real traditional japanese sushi. You won't regret to be there.
Awesome New Look and awesome food! – All i can say is Wow!! They have really made this old restaurant into a hip and fancy place. Its been a year and a half since I been there. What a transformation. They have made a nice bar and lounge area when you first walk in. And the dinnng room looks really nice. You have to go see it for yourself. If you havent been there in awhile you will be suprise for sure. The food was as awesome as it was before.
We won't go back – When we got there the hostess area was in chaos. They told us it would be a 10-15 minute wait. After a half an hour we were finally seated. During our wait, I noticed that the atmosphere was that of a sports bar. People sitting at the bar were yelling and screaming while watching football.
It was the evening of my twin sons' 21st birthday. We all like Japanese restaurants and sushi. This was anything but a Japanese restaurant. We ordered and waited quite a while for our beverages and appetizers. The food that was finally served was tasty. My sons got their soup and salad...fresh and tasty, but nothing really noteworthy. My wife was not served her soup and salad after waiting an hour.
The appetizer that came with my restaurant week special were never served. After an hour and forty five minutes we never got a piece of sushi. I asked to be cashed out and paid my bill. The waitress said she was sorry and then rolled her eyes when she thought we weren't looking. The service was pitiful. We had empty water glasses and sake until we got the waitresses attention. I told Will, the manager that we hadn't been served and he ignored me.
After we paid our bill the waitress said to my sons "Oh by the way...happy birthday" in a snotty tone. We will never go back and I don't know how the Charleston City paper could rate this place number one. It was the worst service I have ever had. If there was a rating lower than eh, I would give it!
Great Experience! – I ordered Gyoza, their house Sushi Chef Roll, Thrash roll, and Maguro Nigiri (I use this to test sushi places for freshness). Service was excellent, food was fresh, large sushi rolls, ambiance & decor was amazing (white dining room with hardwood floors), and management made sure I was happy. The table next to me was getting a bit loud but the management brought their volume level down right away and saved the night. I definitely recommend it.
buyer beware – expensive,
sushi is very average,
portions are small,
cheap-o version of japanese fare,
its not a japanese restaurant, its another dirty bar living on its past reputation...
maybe this place was great at some point, maybe when there was no other sushi in town. but guys, get over it. the place is dirty, inside and out. it hasn't been renovated in who knows how long, the sushi is average at best. other japanese fare is like taco bell to mexican - same names, little semblance.
i normally would not care enough to write this, but i got take out last night, ordered: miso, seaweed salad, sushi (tuna, salmon, sea urchin) and rolls (dragon and spicy tuna) for 2, it came to $75 plus tip for faster than 25 min service.
the taste was average, but the kicker is that my breastfeeding wife went into to a 3 hour MSG buzz, got all freaked out, shaking and gritting teeth. only other thing we had for 3 hours previous was green tea. i called the manager, first he claimed that MSG is only in the soy sauce, then he called me back and said none there either. sorry, sir, but that's simply bullsh*t.
MSG is last century, really. get fresh fish and quality produce and there's no need for it.
so, diners, if you want good japanese food downtown, go to the little place on east bay near harris teeter, much better, cheaper, quieter. if you want to impress someone with the 'best sushi in charleston name 'wasabi', start drinking early.
Sushi here now sucks – Ate there tonight and the tuna roll had 3/16 0f an inch tuna and 1/2 inch total rice. this made for a skimpy roll and then the dork behind the counter got mouthy about it. I have been doing sushi for 5 years here but never again. Big rip off now!
Night Time Atmosphere, – I like going to Wasabi after a long day for a light meal, a few drinks and the social atmosphere. There always seems to be a good crowd, bartenders are super nice, great appetizer menu if you want something light...last night I had the Carpaccio Tuna...gave me that energy boost I needed to get me through the night.
Gerhard is a really good bartenter, takes time to say hello and can socialize with the bar when things get slow.
I enjoy going to Wasabi.
Overpriced sushi establishment that is really an after hours club – Sushi wasn't bad. Service was okay, although we saw many college waiters serving drinks to their underaged classmates. Actually, the whole staff acted pretty juvenille, the hostess being the one exception. The biggest turnoff is the dining area. If you look up while swallowing a piece of tuna, you will notice the huge lights that adorn the ceiling in anticipation of the nights' upcoming activities (this place turns into a club late night). It's not a place for a quiet, classy meal. My friends and I feel lucky we experienced Wasabi, so that we will venture elsewhere. Great place for college kids, not for us older folks.
Good Sushi & Drinks – Wasabi had great food. I think the service was good. The restaurant has a great ambiance, very lively. Fun place to go have a few drinks, slam a few pieces of Sushi, and down some good Saki with quail eggs. I feel comfortable recommending this place to my friends.
