I heard good things about this place, but when we tried it I was incredibly disappointed. Dry beans. Relleno cheese was coagulated. Whole burrito was dripping with oil. Not good.
Amazing, Authentic Mexican food in Portland! – I stumbled across Chilangos online after trying most of the taquerias in Portland and being for the most part disappointed. This place is unbelievable, and is a rare gem when one considers our location in the Pacific Northwest. I have had tacos from Mexico City to the border towns of the Southwest, and Chilangos can easily hold its own. The homemade tortillas are amazing and made on the spot, the selection of meats is just what you would expect from a taqueria in Mexico (more familiar choices like steak and chicken, but also very authentic offerings like lengua, barbacoa, and al pastor) and are all amazing, and the house made salsas are to die for. I highly recommend sampling the more traditional fillings, which are hard to come by in this part of the country and are a rare treat. They also have a big menu of other mexican favorites (enchiladas, burritos, rellenos, quesadillas, menudo, pasole, tortas)...the list goes on. Oh, and dont forget the horchata to wash it all down. Finally, the atmosphere and service are great. Very welcoming and traditional, with the attached tienda selling mexican imports.
If you want to truly step out of the boring trend of bland and americanized mexican food that most places in Portland offer, this place is a must.
Actually Aunthentic! – I have searched long and hard for a good cheap taqueria that uses white, queso and not the crappy colby jack junk that most places are using now. It makes all the difference. I love the food here. They even have the Michoacan icecream bars with the most amazing flavors. The fish burritos are off tha hook!!
The chicken is never dry... – Fresh tortiallas make all the difference in a taco. This is the only tacqueria that I know of in NE that makes their own tortillas. Try their spicy chicken tinga (My Mexican husband and I are addicted to this) and the sopes which are kind of like a tostada but on a thick and chewy base (also home made), topped with beans, meat of your choice, lettuce, tomatoes, avocados and queso. Trade in the hipster scene, the long waits and the over sized bland burritos and taco's filled with what looks like dry leftover meat from the day before, and go down the street to Chilango's.
Authentic – I always laugh when Mexican restaurants describe themselves as authentic, and this one doesn't. But it is. You get choices from breakfast items like huevos rancheros to lunch and dinner like chile rellenos. Brave folks might want to try the brain or tongue tacos. This dining spot is the cheapest, yet best in town.
