I Am Leaving: Don't Bother – Here's another review about the horrible service.
I didn't get to try the food because I walked out.
I came on a moderately busy Sunday afternoon...There were a good number of tables open.
I said hello to the hostess and sat down at the bar.
I waited for a very long time for someone to acknowledge me and give me a menu..
The "bartender" was 4 feet away.
After a long wait, I got a menu and reviewed it.
I sat for a long time for someone to take my order, but that never happened.
They then, started blasting music, which could be heard half way down the sidewalk celebrating someone's birthday...
I took that as an opportunity to leave.
There are alot of outstanding resturants in SF, so don't waste your time going there.
With all the bad reviews about the service, you would think the owners would clean house and get the picture.
Horrible service and overly expensive food – Let?s talk about service. I arrived right at noon and the place was already pretty full. There were only two open tables, and eventually a young man indicated I should take one of the two remaining tables. I sat down and waited. And waited. After about ten minutes, the man who had seated me and two other servers came over, not to wait on me, but to sit at the table next to me at the height of the lunch hour. The original guy (who turned out to be the manager), looked over and saw me and it was clear that he?d forgotten to tell anyone I was there. He found a server, who came with water and a menu and assured me that she would be right back. During my twenty-five minute wait for her to come back to take my order I was able to observe the meeting occurring at the table next to me. The manager and two employees came out, sat down and had a kumbaya love session. The manager spent time singling out each employee ? ?You bring me energy because of your smiles and your great hats.? Meeting ended with the manager placing his hands on each employees? shoulders, looking them in the eye, then giving them a hug and the exhortation, ?let?s take care of some customers!? During this entire time, I had been sitting there about two feet away, clearly waiting for someone to take my order. During this entire time (absolute height of lunch hour), potential customers came in, saw all of the tables full and no one to wait on them and left. And the most astounding thing ? having just spent nearly half an hour taking the time of three employees and an entire table in a tiny restaurant during lunch hour ? about five minutes later the manager came over with two different employees and did the whole thing again.
The bill was over $35 for not a huge amount of food, one person, no alcohol, which was ridiculous although the food was good. But mostly these folks need to spend less time being selfish and more time being selfless.
"I AM DISAPPOINTED" Avoid this place! – I recently met some friends here for lunch. My boyfriend and I are both lifelong vegetarians and have our fair share of bad vegetarian food. Cafe Gratitude takes the prize. The customer service was horrible. I am a former server myself so I understand how mistakes can be made but this was unacceptable. I ordered a salad and was told ten minutes after placing my order that the kitchen was "out of salad". Another ten minutes passed before my server returned to take a replacement order. Meanwhile, my friends all received their food and I was left waiting. Random servers continued to ask me if I needed to place an order and one even returned to tell me they could make my salad without the pears (after I had placed my second order). Why wouldn't they have just told me they were out of pears? Why tell me they were "out of salad" and make me order something else? When my enchiladas finally arrived, somewhere a Mexican was shedding a tear. It was as if they just dumped cayenne pepper on them to make up for the bland ingredients. I love spice, but this was horrible. Everyone at my table agreed. The only good part of this restaurant was the ginger-ale. Outrageously priced at $15 for two glasses "I am effervescent" quickly became "I am poor". Avoid this place! Support a veggie chef and business that has evolved past the brown, crunchy earth patties that give health food a bad name.
Best healthy restaurant, great service – This a wonderful place to eat for anyone interested in healthy food, but especially for anyone who has any dietary-health restrictions like me! The service was friendly and helpful. After reading the other reviews, I was expecting a long wait for the food but I was pleasantly surprised. It came within 5 minutes of ordering.
Michael, our waiter, came to our table immediately. He is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the restaurant's menu. By carefully checking the recipe's ingredients, he helped me make a great choice.
My food choice, a delicious spring roll with Thai sauce called 'I am Insightful, had a nice presentation and was really good. The desert, key-lime pie, was heavenly. They offered a sample of two cold drinks, ?I am Grace? was our favorite.
I enjoyed my experience so much that I purchased their recipe book, "I am Grateful" and plan to try the other location today.
I would recommend sitting at the front or middle of the restaurant, not in the rear by the cold-foods.
Worst Customer Service – The owners of Cafe Gratitude need to improve customer service. I have gotten take out from the Harrison Street location numerous times... and each time I have to wait and wait and wait. I pre-order by phone so I don't have to wait and inevitably it takes 15 minutes for the staff to pack up my meal and get me out the door. Today at 11am there were very few customers and it took the staff forever to bag my order. Two staffers were eating at the bar, another sitting on the steps and another sitting down at a table. One server was on the floor and also trying to oversee the to go area. This is unacceptable. The staff needs to pick up the pace and realize some of us don't have tons of time... we need to get in and out. For the price you pay.. this place is not worth it. The staff is definitely not attentive and in dire need of some serious training.
Fabulous food, terrible service – The tasty vegan food at Cafe Gratitude is hard to beat - wonderful flavors made with fresh, organic ingredients, beautifully presented. The problem comes in getting the food to the table. On repeated visits over the past three or four months, we were approached with friendly smiles by two or three wait-persons. All seemed eager to help us choose from the wonderful menu (recently redesigned). We ordered appetizers, salads, entrees, beverages. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. It took a good half-hour to get a glass of wine. Another half hour for the appetizers. Another half-hour for the salads. And yet another half-hour for the entrees. While I believe in a gracious, continental pacing of my meals, this was ridiculous. On other occasions I have gone to Gratitude just for dessert. Again, a good half-hour for a simple piece of pie. There is no excuse for lousy service. Food is an easy 4 stars. Service is the worst I have experienced in San Francisco, or anywhere else. If you have less than 2 hours to spend dining, you had best take your business elsewhere.
Good Food. Service is wack. – Food was good and unique. service was bad and unique. they forgot to process the order so we sat for 30-45mns with our tea and beer (beer was awesome) before someone said "wait were you getting food?" and it wasnt even our server whom never came back to the table after the error and never said sorry as well thought it was busy when only 6 people (including myself) were eating. had to go back to the meter 2 times. but the people were overall very nice. the food was very good as well... got the "i am fabulous" lasagne for those foreign to the joint. either way... i wouldent go back. maybe because when your there you on cafe gratitude time not yours and there are so many other better places in the area IE Naan n curry, plutos, park chows, sushi bars etc. also goodearth is across the street and they too are healthy and only take like 10mns.
The Food Will Inspire You, But The Service Will Not...;o) – Last year I decided do to my first fast which required that I eat nothing but Vegan food for most if not all of my meals. This lasted for a month. I went on this 4-week program relying on "Healthforce" nutritional products for both intestinal cleansing and nutritional needs. As a result, I found myself eating at Cafe Gratitude for many of my dinners and the occasional breakfast. I'm a carnivore by nature, and continue to eat meat, but like the idea of mixing in food that is in its' purest form into my monthly diet. I certainly found it here at Cafe Gratitude. What I found most appealing was their ability to create amazing recipes that actually taste amazing, even to the most selective of palates. I usually order the "I'm Graceful" or "I'm Elated", and combine that with their somosas appetizer or hummus. The atmosphere is also very pleasant, and the energy is extremely welcoming. The only gripe that I have about this place is what appears to be at times the "clueless ness" of the wait staff. There have been instances where I've ordered take out, and someone forgot to process the order with the kitchen! This can be extremely aggravating if you're someone like me that has a low tolerance threshold for service errors. There was also an instance with a large dinner party I was with. Someone had taken our order, and forgot to send it to the kitchen! They realized this 30 minutes into the night. We ended up having to wait over an hour to be served. Sometimes you just have to take this in strides. The people are so nice that it's hard to put your mean face on. My theory is that a good chunk of their staff probably did LSD back in the day, and may encounter flash backs from time to time. So you want to call back a second time when ordering take out, or watch your waiter or waitress attentively after they take your order. In some cases your orders may get lost...;o) Aside from the unpredictable service, I recommend the cafe highly.
Love it and I'm not a vegetarian (or anywhere close to a vegan) – A wonderful spot. I go there about twice a month and I'm not a mission hipster, not an artist and don't work for a non-profit. I bathe daily and I absolutely love this place. I feel healthy and satisfied everytime I leave. The desserts are awesome. With so much obesity in this country more people should learn about this way of eating, even if it doesn't become a lifestyle. Service is spacey and a little strange... For example, when I came with 4 people, there wasn't seating immediately available. That's ok. We were on Cafe Gratitude time, but the staff didn't really seem to know what to do. There was one group ahead of us and then another group came in. It took about 3 staff members to figure out they should make a list, as if they had never done this before... (I guess this is a collaborative approach?) There were a few seats at the 'bar' so I told the hostest/waitress person that we were going to try one of the organic beers while we waited. This also seemed totally foreign to them. I guess nobody just comes for a beer at their bar. The hostest was very confused. She seemed to consult 4 other people and then said, "ok , but can you pay separately at the bar and at the table?" Of course, I wouldn't dare attempt further confusing the cute staff already high on organic extracts and power juices.... You have to go for the experience and the unique food, not a dinner which will get you in and out in 20 minutes.
Decent food, bad service – So their whole philosophy about being present and 'grateful' is fine and good, but the service sure needs some help. The servers wander around the restaurant looking confused, food is left sitting (I know, it's not like it gets cold) for a while before someone decides to bring it over, they mess up orders and forget to bring things on a regular basis. You can't really get mad at them because they're so quasi-hippy-spiritual and somewhat apologetic that there's really nothing you can do about their abysmal service standards.
That being said, the food is just OK in my book, the smoothies and juices are great, but everything else just seems to be different combinations of the same ingredients: nuts, flax, and more nuts.
