Bungalow-style guest rooms and royal treatment on a breathtaking white-sand beach. – The Scene
Flickering torches light narrow paths past lush plants and tidal pools to a secluded white-sand beach. Apparition-like staff members glide just out of sight, instantly available to cater to any whim. The resort's 243 bungalow-style rooms, each with a petroglyph or Polynesian theme, are appointed with tropical accents like bamboo headboards and rattan chaise lounges. Many of the spacious marble-accented bathrooms include adjacent outdoor lava-rock showers. Private lanais feature ocean or golf-course views.
The resort's Hualalai Sports Club & Spa offers an elaborate fitness center, 36-hole golf course and a variety of massages, available indoors or in one of several semi-private fragrant gardens. Five swimming-whirlpool areas include a lap pool, infinity pools and a splash pool; King's Pond is carved out of natural lava rock, filled with a combination of fresh mountain and ocean water and more than 3,500 snorkeler-friendly fish. At each pool, on-call attendants provide ice water and spritz services.
Modern luxury combined with Hawaii's historical charms. – The Scene
This property is a model for how to make a modern resort fit in with the storied past of its setting. On the walls and throughout the public areas is a superb collection of Hawaiian art and artifacts dating from 1775 to the present--feather helmets, a 200-year-old kapa cloth, turn-of-the-century quilts, canoe paddles and an 18th-century necklace made of human hair and ivory. There is also a 1,100-square-foot Hawaiian culture interpretive center with exhibits about the history of the Islands.
The rooms are in 36 low-rise bungalow-style structures arranged in clusters. Each cluster has its own theme and pool. Every accommodation is furnished with fine wicker and rich woods, and has a private lanai overlooking the ocean. Some of the luxurious granite and slate bathrooms supplement their facilities with outdoor showers surrounded by bamboo privacy screens. Among the pools you'll find King's Pond, a black-lava anchialine pool that re-creates the ancient fishponds of Hawaiian royalty. You can even snorkel in it. The hotel provides snorkels and fins at no charge. Other pools include the Sea Shell (a family favorite) and Beach Tree (preferred by adults). There is also a tennis club, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course and 11,000-square-foot spa and fitness center.
