I had an appointment with Glenn ELLIS and was waiting for her around hour.SHE NEVER APPEARED!and never picked up her phone! "SUPER PROFESSIONAL "....I'm SO disappointed and angry about it(( AND PEOPLE FROM the reception didn't know that she is not in the salon for 45 min, they didn't even checked her. JUST WASTING OF TIME!!
Ruben Colon, hair maestro! – When my husband and I met he had ho-hum hair. It was cut fairly short and was relatively shapeless. I loved him anyway!!! After we got married I started getting my hair cut by Ruben Colon at Sally Herschberger downtown. My hair looked so amazing that my husband decided to treat himself to a haircut with Ruben. Well....let me tell you, his entire look has been transformed by Ruben!!! His ho-hum hair has turned into this fabulous wavy sexy tousled style that suits him perfectly! He went from Joe Schmoo to Richard Gere! Strangers will stop him on the street to say "wow, you have fabulous hair!".This is the honest truth!!! It can be a little annoying to me when the stranger is young and pretty but I'm willing to suffer through it because he looks so darn good!!! Ruben really is an artist and I will never ever get my or my husband's hair cut by anyone else. Bravo Ruben!!!!
Salon Experience – This morning I visited Dana Ionato for color at her new home. I was greeted at the front desk and then escorted to the proper area for service. The salon was moving and grooving with positive energy. Thank you Dana for great color once again!
Done with Ruben Colon! – This is a first time I have decided to review someone.
I have been going to Ruben Colon, who was recommended to me by a good friend, since almost a year now.
The haircuts he has given me in the past were OK, nothing that would provoke an ecstatic feeling in me but they were OK and it looked good.
One could wonder why did you keep on going?! Well being new to the area I was afraid of trying another hairdresser and frankly did not know where to start to look for a really good and talented one.
My last visit to Ruben Colon was last week. Despite the fact that it was my 4th appointment with him, he still misspelled my name and exchanged me for someone else. Honestly I do not this about the "politness wrapping" as long as the hairdresser cuts my hair well but in this occasion the whole package was purely miserable.
It has been a few months since we have seen eachtother and I have told him I wanted to let grow my hair a bit more and to give me a haircut to do so (aka blend in my long outgrown bangs and not to much of short layering on the back).
What does he do? Layers my hair and I end up with a 1980ies haircut which Ruben has resourcefully hiden behind a waved blowout.
I was shocked the next day after I have tried to manage my new haircut. The layering is awful, straight and heavy, and ends up at half-lenght of my hairlength.
I am upset and highly dissapointed that someone who charges 185 USD for a haircut can not manage to do a nice job.
an experience that should be more than once in a lifetime!!! – i've been coloring my hair for as long as i can remember and it's never looked as good as it has since i've started using Keith. He's so talented and creative. My hair looks and feels amazing. The color is rich and dark while it's so shiny and healthy.
As far as blow outs...I'm very picky. Keith told me to eeither use Qunitin or James. My 1st visit, I used Quintin....fantastic! I had red carpet hair!! the 2nd time I used James....beautiful!!!
Regardless my experiences in the salon have been fantastic. Everyone is nice and friendly.
Dont think they take their "art" (hair) seriously – Well I thought this was a great place but my friend went there to get her new hair extensions because she was told they did them wrong at the uptown location.
at the downtown location they put the extensions in the right way but the color looks so bad, it is streaks of dark brown next to streaks of very light blonde, it looks tacky and not natural at all.
I told her to go back but she said she already went back and thegirl who did her extensions was defensive and said "I did what you wanted." the problem is that my friend wanted them to look natural, she doesnt wear a lot of makeup or anything, but the hair doesnt look natural at all. it is very streaky and unnatural looking.
my view is I am just surprised that they allowed her to walk out of the salon that way because it's not something to be proud of.
after all, they are hair artists so they should care about what their "paintings" look like when they're finished, right? it's like they don't care about what the finished "art" looks like.
anyway, when a client leaves a salon, she or he is like a walking advertisement for the salon-- OR a walking "don't go where I went" for the salon. I think when people see her hair and she mentions where she had it done, they will not want to go there. I'm really confused why the Hershberger salon is like that- you would think they would care that their finished products be great since they carry Sally's name.
(just want to add that I do like the vibe here though, so maybe go for a cut and not for extensions or color? And it's not more expensive then other well-known places in NY. But the stylists maybe dont care so much about their work I think. Or they dont care about making the customer happy because they know another customer is waiting to come in the door because of Sally's name.)
Nightmare with Ruben – I was not going to write this review but i think people should know my experience at Sally Hershberger Downtown specifically with Ruben. I went to Sally Hershberger Downtown since has a hip and cool reputation, oh well,
I guess i got the only stylist that was not busy and clearly is not cool or hip, his name is Ruben. First, he was 25 minutes late and when he saw me, he gave me a welcome that you get in a ghetto( loud and tacky, he called me GIRL, like if i was his childhood friend). But anyways, i did not wanted to judge just wanted a good treatment and haircut. His assistant had the same ghetto attitude or even worse so i got a really bad shampoo while he was talking to another assistant next to him. I felt like a was a piece of clothing getting washed on the rock of a river in the 17th century.
Anyways, to make my nightmare shorter i ended up looking older than when i walked in and for sure less cool, i looked from 1992 and not really hip as i consider myself. The haircut looked like a triangle, there was layer after layer like steps on top of the other, my shorter layer was like 1 inch short. it was def. a disaster. I commented to him that the final result was not exactly what we discussed but he answered was that i was going to be fine and dismissed me, I guess i do not have to explain how bad i felt after this experience.
I also explain the girl at the reception my unhappiness about the service and the experience and she said she will tell the manager of the place. Next day the manger called me and i explained what happened and she offered someone else to fix my hair. First i didnt wanted to go back but i decided that it could not get any worse so i came and another stylist, Frederik, try to fix it as much possible.
I do not think i will go back to that salon, and at least not to Ruben, he destroyed my hair, was rude, uncool and old fashion. And for a lot of money.
****Before writing this review i read all the others about this salon and its amusing how many good reviews he has. Seems like he is paying somebody or he is writing those reviews himself.******
Run, don't walk, to Ruben at Sally Hershberger Downtown – If you're looking for a stylist at Sally Hershberger Downtown make an appointment with RUBEN COLON. He's wonderful. I just got my fifth haircut from him and I love it. In fact, I've loved all five. He's a wonderful haircutter who's as good with my curly/wavy hair as he is with my niece's stick straight hair. Plus he's a mensche. I unreservedly recommend him.
Also, don't be intimidated by reports that the salon is ultra-hip. It's hip, but there's no attitude.
Ruben is ok – One of my co-workers recommended Ruben to me. I have been to see him about three times this year. I go for color but to cut my bangs I go to another place close to where I live that is cheaper, since Ruben is cash. It's worth going to a good salon and to pay the extra money for a good color and shaping cut. The touch ups can be done anywhere else.
Ruben Rocks - BEST hair ever! – I've been going to Ruben for my hair for almost 5 years now, and he just keeps getting better and better. I've gone from long hair, to cutting it super short a-la-katie holmes, to growing it long again, and everytime I leave the salon I feel like a million bucks. Ruben is incredibly talented, very professional and attentive, super funny, and - most importantly - he LISTENS to what you want done. Bring him a picture of the hair you desire and you shall have it. What can I say...thank god for Ruben and his hair styling prowess, and the fabulous colorist, Nikki, for her amazing coloring technique. I call them the "Hair Dream Team" - truly a cut above the rest (no pun intended...). LOVE LOVE LOVE my hair - as always...
