FANTASTIC views, cruddy service and mediocre food. AHH, that's magic in the making!

I should have known better when all the people around me seem to be tourists, or locals who obligingly take their tourist family members there just because it's THE San Francisco thing to do.

Do yourself a favor and see Golden Gate Bridge instead and your wallet will thank you too.

great service, nice setting, bad portion size – went here with my fiancee for a romantic night. got the window seat we requested. hostess and server were both very nice. location is beautiful and very classy. the food was a bit disappointing. very beautifully prepared and everything was cooked to perfection. ordered the crab cake appetizer... didnt realize $19 only bought ONE crabcake. my fiancee ordered the scallops for her main course. very disappointed. it was incredibly salty. 4 scallops topped with shredded pork (10 times more salty than bacon). so salty that it was almost inedible. but the upside was the scallops were cooked perfectly. but for $36 4 scallops didnt quite fill a normal sized stomach. i had the steak and it was awesome. mushrooms were a nice touch... asparagus cooked to perfection. but what really stood out was the potatoes au gratin. they were the best potatoes ive ever had! the steak had good flavor, no need for A1 or any other condiments. very impressed with the steak. but i had to split my meal with my fiancee because the scallops just didnt quite cut it. overall i would come back, but only 3 stars this time because we didnt leave the restaurant with our stomachs full.... which is really the main reason why we go eat.

Great food, service and location – I took my fiance to SFO for this vacation, booked a table over the phone.

Although I was told they couldn't garanty a window table, they managed to place us near the window.

The service was good, discreet and efficiant, I had an excellent fish and my fiancee rumsteak, which was really tasty and tender. Although it was a little pricy, I felt it was excellent value for money.

We definitaly will go back there next time we go to SFO.

Such a great evening – What a FABULOUS dinner my friend and I had at Sutro's last night. Better yet, the Dine About Town promotion feels like a real deal there considering their average entree price is close to $28. I had the organic broccoli soup which was 20% cream, a juicy grilled swordfish that was prepared with some really tasty interesting root-like vegetables, and a fancy dessert sampler. My friend had the soup also, and a pillow steak that was amazing as well. (Kobe beef). She had the creme brule for dessert and she I and both agreed that it was the best creme brule we'd ever had in our lives. Service and ambiance were great. Also, you can't beat watching the waves crash onto the rocks and shore below from a view table in an architecturally-savvy restaurant.

GREAT SF EXPERIENCE... – I returned to San Francisco this holiday season for the first time in a couple years and a visit to the new Cliff House was on the list...WOW... WHAT A FACELIFT! I actually returned for a second time! Our first visit my host had made reservations in SUTROS', so we were promptly whisked away to our table for a sumptuous meal accompanied by an impressive, mostly Californian wine list. All at the table were pleased with our fare. Beautiful views all around... My second visit, a friend and I dropped by Sutros' again in hopes to get in but alas, were booked for the evening. Luckily, we were directed to the bar and lounge where the views are just as good and full menu is offered WITH NO WAIT... We were very impressed by the knowlewdge and proffesionalism of the two bartenders working, non-pretentious and a pleasure to chat with. Looking forward to my next visit when I return to town.

A modern slant on crowd-pleasing American fare updates the Cliff House. – The Scene
Housed in the Sutro Wing of the Cliff House, this vast dining room has soaring ceilings, an open kitchen and the all-important jaw-dropping Pacific view. Though the interior decor is distinctly modern, with a neutral color scheme and a steel beam ceiling, vintage photos and other historic ephemera nod to the building's historic past. Down-to-earth servers please both locals and out-of-towners alike.

The Food

Chef Patrick Clark's seasonal fare drags this historic landmark's menu into the present. Many of the dishes are built around Northern California's bounty of farm-fresh produce, such as a golden beet salad with Humboldt Fog cheese and a red kuri squash soup. But other dishes nod to the city's Asian influences, like the Dungeness crab Sutro roll and sesame-crusted ahi tuna served atop teriyaki lentils. Traditional favorites, such as New York steak and braised chicken breast, round out the menu.

Best Views – Delicious food!! From the appetizers to dessert! It's not a cheap restaurant but you can have a decent lunch for 100 bucks :) Need to call for reservations if you want a seat right next to the windows that view the sea. However, you can always sit by the bar tables, they are as nice and you can still have a great view. Service is excellent as well! I loved it.

UNGRACIOUS SERVICE – Definitely not recommended for corporate entertainment if requiring smooth and refined service. Even the Maitre d'Hotel does not know how to speak to a customer. Impeccable staff not to be found.

Great Experience – I took an out of town guest here for dinner and it could not have been better. Everythng was perfect. My friend had the fish special and thought it was the best she has ever had. Presentation is beautifull, while the portion size is still very good. The staff also very friendly. Great place for a special dinner!

Delightful evening! – Having only been to the Cliffhouse a couple of times (a few years ago) before this time, the transformation we witnessed was astounding. Gone are the times when a decent order of fish and chips was as far as your expectation dared to wander... the new menu is worthy of every accolade heaped on it! The food was truly delicious, and the service very attentive.

The wine list is certainly worthy of mention as well: it is entirely possible to have a great wine here without putting down a month's rent for it.
