One of the city's best spots for a live show--the log-lined downstairs lounge is intimate and in my experience, you can almost always get a drink in three minutes or less. Upstairs, the sexy low lit bar is filled with attractive minglers, and there's even a fire pit, just past the smoking patio. Great late night nosh stop, they serve food until last call.
You have to sit on the patio, even when it's cold they keep it hot with heaters. Simple cocktails and a small craft beer draft list. There's also a restaurant, I've heard good things about breakfast.
Be ready to be judged and or ignored – I mistakenly went on a double date last night to DF. We sat and waited for 20 minutes on a slow night to boot. No greetings or acknowledgment from one of the 4 servers at all. I finally went to the bar to order a drink and was told to wait. My wait was actually due to the personal conversation (didn''t seem to care that I can hear) he was having with the other person behind the bar. We finally left and I was walking out I heard the 2 guys behind the bar laughing. Never again.
Empty – I was surprised when I walked in to Doug Fir restaurant for a breakfast meeting this morning to see only one other table seated. When the "hostess" eventually seated me, I realized why. She was simply annoyed that I'd walked in the door. It was breakfast - a little heavy, a little bit of a limited menu, but overall fine. That surly hostess just sort of set a rotten tone. She should be unemployed.
BAD BAD BAD place to go **AVOID** – ** this review is solely for the downstairs music venue and not the restaurant upstairs. (I've never eaten there and never will now)
I think the venue has potential but unfortunately it is staffed by a pack of rude, ignorant, simple minded bastards.
Last night my girlfriend and I went there to see a few bands. We received tickets as a Christmas present. Everything was great until we crossed paths with the bartender/bouncer. Earlier in the night my girlfriend went to the bar to get a couple of beers. The beers were $4 each and my girlfriend bought two. Unless my math is incorrect, $4 plus $4 equals $8. Anyway, the bartender/bouncer handed her the beers, she handed him a $10 and he walked away without saying thank you and never returned with the change. It seems to me that it would be a bad practice to assume that all the change a person was due to receive is a tip. At this she bit her tongue and returned to our table and we sat and watched the music which was excellent. After the second band and just before the third band I started to feel a little drowsy. I felt this way not because I was overly intoxicated but because I started work at 5am that morning, worked over ten hours that day and my job is very labor intensive. I only had two beers within a two hour period of time. While I felt relaxed I was by no means drunk. So upon my nodding off, the bartender rushes to my table and gives ME the warning "this isn't a hotel! If you can't stay awake then you are out of here!" Keep in mind this was while the last band was setting up. I had had a long day and once the music started all would have been fine. I stayed awake from that point but my girlfriend put her head on my shoulders and she nodded off a bit.
The bouncer came right back over and told us we had to leave!
I explained to him that everything was ok and that we weren't causing a problem and for him to relax and chill. He would not budge... He ordered us out. After trying again in vain to get him to reconsider, he harshly ordered us out again. At this point I lost my temper and told him to "go F himself", Probably not the best thing I could have done but I felt like he was attacking me and my girlfriend. After this we exchanged some more (not too) pleasantries. I flipped him off and then he proceeded to grab and push me! I couldn't believe he actually put his hands on me I was enraged. All the while I did not touch him or take a swing at him even though I wanted to so so so bad. Like I said, I wasn't drunk and my attitude was a response to his aggressiveness. Finally we got outside and after a few more comments to one another we walked away. As we were walking back to the car I was so angry and as a result I did a couple of unwise things which caused the police to be called. I wont explain what it was but I will say that no one was hurt and no property was permanently or badly damaged. The bouncers brought me back in the building and the cops took me to alcohol detox even though I was completely sober!
I'll admit that I didn't use the best judgement in this situation but that bouncer/bartender was incessantly pouring fuel on a fire that HE created. He is a sad excuse for a bartender/bouncer and probably a human. In my opinion he should be terminated or put in the kitchen upstairs where he will not have to deal with the public.
I will never go to the Doug Fir again (probably not welcome anyway) and I advise all of you to make sure that if you go to this place...
1) Make sure to get your change for your purchases.
2) Mind your manners and watch out for that aggro bartender/bouncer.
3) See to it that you drink a five hour energy before you go there. After all, if you so much as close your eyes for longer than three seconds you'll get thrown out of the place.
4) Might want to bring a small video camera to document things just in case you end up on the wrong side of that psycho bartender.

Worst Slop In Town – My husband and I decided to stop by for dinner a few weeks ago. We love the look of the place, the 70's design is awesome. The restaurant was pretty empty for a Friday night, which should have been our first clue. When our host tried seating us at a tiny table, we asked for a booth and it seemed to destroy his night. He threw our menus down on an empty booth and walked away. We decided to order an array of appetizers: some bourbon steak bites, calamari and spinach dip. It took forever to get our food! The steak bites were so gross and slimy, they literally fell apart atop the stale toast they were served with. It tasted like dog food. The calamari was complete rubber, and ice cold. I couldn't even eat the spinach dip, that was also served with stale toast. My husbands ice tea wasn't fresh brewed, but LIPTON with lemon flavoring and we never received refills on water. I am so sad to say that we will NEVER eat at Doug Fir again. We wasted time and money that we will never get back. If you're looking for some groovy 70's atmosphere, tune out the Doug Fir and tune in to the "Brady Bunch" instead.
Extremely rude service... – I was there the other night trying to get in behind someone using an id that looked extremely real (as im from the state it was issued in)... the men at the front door were extremely rude to her and starting making fun of the id, acting like high school students teasing the weird kid.. they then preceded to pass the id around laughing, and then even preceded to show me and other people outside the id as if this was something funny. basically they were extremely unprofessional and rude.
Stay Away! – The waiters were incredibly rude. I made the mistake of going there for my 21st birthday, PLEASE DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE. Bartenders are stuck up and MEAN! Here is some free advise to the workers at the Doug Fir: Tattoos and piercings don't make you cool and you look like a hypocritical idiot when you are rude to people who don't look the same as you. I will never recommend your "lounge" to anyone and I will even tell whoever will listen to stay away, although you probably prefer us non-tattooed people to stay away from you ultra "hip" and miserable people.
A Portland Hot Spot! – This place rocks! If you want a real Portland vibe! This place has wonderful service, food and architecture! You can also catch new and exciting bands.
Overcharged and disappointed – Had family and friends visiting Sunday. We decided to grab a drink and food at Doug Fir since we were in the area. Everything went well, food was good,service was fine(except our waiter had us open the bottle of Prosecco we ordered because he said he was afraid to?). At the end we divided the bill by 6, everyone paid cash and I put my amount on my debit card. Well unfortunately they authorized my card for the entire amount, however I was presented with a receipt to sign for the amount I had stated. I called the next day and was told a manager would call back. No one called. Well they put the charge through at over $100.00 of the amount I owed. Called again, was told same thing, a manager will call you. Still no call back.
It should be a given that when dining out and using a card for payment one shouldn't be over charged, especially for such a large amount. Also a manager should have responed immediately or made sure the right amount was charged to my account. I will hesitate to ever dine at this place in the future.
Unlike anyplace you've ever seen! – The Doug Fir and the adjoining hotel are beyond description. While the drinks are a bit spendy and the crowd is hipster, the Fir is a great place to see a show or have a few drinks. DRINK ON THE PATIO DURING THE SUMMER!
Don't come here hungry. – We moved to Portland recently and kept seeing the Doug Fir when we drive up Burnside. It's really cute inside and out. My boyfriend and I went there on a date on a weeknight to try it. He ordered a steak which he said was good but it was really small for the pricetag.
I'm vegan and I was told my only option was the expensive pasta. It had a lot of very large olives in it. Do not order this dish unless you really really like olives. When I say "like" I mean you are passionate about them and you would chose olives as one of your three items you are taking with you to a desert island. We ordered drinks which were mixed very weak. Maybe we should have gotten beers. Does beer go well with olives? We will be coming back for the music but probably not the food.
