Meriwether's food and customer attitude is so atrocious that it would be a perfect candidate for Gordon Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares"...except Meriwether's is so far gone that even Mr. Ramsay couldn't help it.
After 4 glasses of wine ($10 each) in tiny stemware that was less than half the pour of most Portland restaurants, we ordered 4 entrees: two of us ordered chicken that was so dry and oversalted that Kentucky Fried Chicken wouldn't even have served it. (My request for no salt or butter was completely ignored and not even acknowledged.) My wife's lamb chop was literally raw and inedible. Risotto looked and tasted like yesterday's cream of wheat. The most telling sign: when we complained, the manager wasn't the least bit surprised...or concerned. She obiously knew that the kitchen was a disaster with an incompetent, assembly line chef who didn't care enough to check his dishes.
Like many once-nice restaurants on a steep decline to oblivion, Meriwether's has jacked their prices and hired an utterly incompetent chef while trying to squeeze the last dollar they can from unsuspecting diners before they close their doors.
Don't be the last one to have a lousy, overpriced, inedible meal: avoid this place like the plague...and warn your friends.
Very disappointing. I went back after going a year ago after mixed reviews. The service was horrible. What should have been an hour or 1.5 hour meal was 3.5 hours from the time we sat down. The waitress forgot at least one thing each time she came to to the table, which was not often. When I asked for a salad and wanted to add broiled chicken to it I was informed that the only way the chef would do this was to charge me for a chicken dinner entree. So what was a 15.00 salad would have been close to 30.00. Any restaurant that abuses clients in this way does not deserve your business. I will NOT be back.
Please take the time to read... – We have been visiting MW's for as long as it has been open, 7 years. We have had some memorable times and some that have been challenging when it comes to overall experiences. Unfortunately, I have to write this review as I promise you we will not be frequenting MW's again. Why you ask?: 4-5 oz expensive wine pours, menu prices have increased ~20% over the past year while portions have declined, can't make dietary subs to certain menus, and more than any other was told by a very reliable source that the owners make the employees pool tips on holidays (auto 20%) so that they can take a sizable cut (~30-40%). When they are already gouging me, why do I want to support them gouging their employees? I don't! Integrity MW's.
Horribly disappointed. – Chose this place for our 25th wedding anniversary - big mistake. All because of the food - it was very expensive and ranged from bland/uninspiring to just wierd. E.g. Crab risotto looked like a bowl of rice pudding with 2 minute pieces of what could have been crab. Scallops were served on some concoction with lentils and their idea of "seasonal greens" is a few lettuce leaves! Deserts were no better; the creme brullee resembled half-set glue and tasted of nothing. We were horribly disappointed - made worse since we remember the building as L'Auberge!
Farm fresh food, fabulous flavors and beautiful presentation – Meriwether's is a restaurant that I often recommend to friends looking for a special night out or for a great Happy Hour. It has a wonderful atmosphere inside, and a fabulous heated and covered patio. I have been to several "Sunday Suppers" (last Sundays in Oct.-April), and thoroughly enjoyed the generous and tasty dishes cooked in their hearth by Chef Earl. And Happy Hour is a culinary treat with some amazing small plates and nibbles! I have always had good service and superior food. Love it!
Great Choices. Great Tasting Food. – You know what? I sometimes have high expectations of places at which I dine. I must say that on the 2 occasions I have eaten at Meriwether's I have been more than satisfied. I did have a minor problem with a steak that was undercooked but this was quickly addressed. The brunch is to die for imo. I think they do a good job and I like the service that the wait staff provides. My comment: I feel that I got value for the money spent and if was fun: so there. :)
Disappointing – The Ragu was way too spicy, I couldn't even eat it. The pork chop came out raw. We sent the pork chop back and it came back medium rare. We came home disappointed and hungry.
Overpriced and disappointing – I mailnly came to Meriwether's becasue the weather was good, they have nice outdoor seating and I wanted to take a friend out to lunch. We ordered a sangria; it looked pretty enough, with cherries and strawberries and blueberries floating in it; however, it was basically cheap whtite wine, watered down with soda. We sent it back, got a version without soda, not much better; our "salad with scallops and hummus" were 2 seared medium size scallops on a tablespoon of hummus, topped with a handfull of ( delicious and fresh ) greens. We asked for bread,, but that was not part of the deal.. That's it..our bill, without tip , was $50! I was still hungry when I left.
nice decor but big disappointment – This was a super place to dine when it was a French cuisine restaurant. When Meriwether's opened there was a lot of to-do on the TV including about the wonderful food. Previously I've been to and not cared for the bar as most of the seating is for people with extra long legs. Yes, I am short, but even with my 3.5 inch spikes, which I wear intentionally to overcome the problem, my feet were dangling at least 3 inches above the floor. I finally did dinner there last night with three friends. Unless they change chefs I won't intentionally go back. Every item we tried was way too salty including the lamb, the fresh fish, and even and especially the bread and the fresh vegetable appetizers! Two of us tried three different red wines having requested something like a Cab or Merlot; all were awful. The service was good. The accommodating waitress had to replace twice items that were opposite of what we ordered including "no salt please" on the fries and my decaf expresso was not decaf after all. I'd give zero stars if I could.
Lovely dinner – Had a lovely dinner with my family here over the holidays. Very easy to make reservations, wonderful atmosphere, and great food. I loved the beet salad and chicken that I had, and we all left feeling satiated and well served.
We'll be back.
