it's CLOSED – You really should mention that this place is no longer in existence. Neither is its successor "400 Highland Ave" -- I actually browsed over here to try and find the owners' names. They need to know that one major reason my friends and I avoided the place was that HORRENDOUS acoustics. You couldn't hear yourself think, you couldn't hear the dj. Instead, you could hear the boom of reverberating and reflecting conversations across the room.
Great place, good music – This place has recently been bringing in a new DJ in on saturdays. He played every song we requested and for those that he didn't have, he wrote them on a request list to bring the following week.
mediocre dating spot – This is a hot spot for dating couples and young groups. With drinks the evening came out to be quite pricey, but the food items that we got were unremarkable; I can't imagine how they could have been more mediocre. One of the specials on the menu said it came with "hari covert" (haricots verts). 'Nuff said.
Thursdays are now sophisticated – It appears that Sauce has solved the problem of the DJ's mentioned in the other review, at least on Thursday nights.
They have brought in a pretty seasoned DJ that seems to finally understand that its a lounge and not a frat house. The music and the crowd have become way more sophisticated and when I complemented the DJ last week he gave me a compilation CD that contained the same type stuff that he was playing that night. I must say it all seemed extremely professional and really made me add it to my list.
I hope others find that its changed and are willing to try it.
Could be AWESOME – This place COULD be awesome. Could is the key word here. The food, drink and service are always fantastic. The atmosphere and decor is also great. So what could be the problem then? The scene I must say is awful. For some reason this place does not attract a good crowd. The place is almost always empty from 10-1. The music volume is way too loud and the DJ's try way too hard to be original.
The main problem is that this place doesn't seem to know how to handle a late night crowd. It doesn't know if its a restaurant, dance club, bistro, or lounge. Pick one!
There are lots of good things about this place but it COULD be sooooooo much better. I hope management can take this place to the level it SHOULD be.
Hip Davis Square hangout brings a fresh new concept to Somerville's dining scene. – In Short
With its stylish interior and inviting menu of multi-ethnic tapas, Sauce provides Davis Square residents and area professionals with a thoroughly modern drinking and dining destination. The yawning, split-level interior includes a diminutive wine bar as well as a much larger bar that sports several large TVs. Sauce's menu incorporates a bevy of small plates--expect to order two or three per person--and offerings run the gamut from lobster risotto to Sicilian spinach strudel.
Spectacular – We chose Sauce because it was an actual sit-down restuarant, with a bar, but not A BAR. The service was speedy, and staff was very friendly and offered wonderful suggestions. The food was probably the best food I've ever had. Chicken was moist with a brilliant sauce. The steak you didnt even need a steak knife for and was very flavourful. Dessert was spectacular. Cocktails were smooth and delicious, and not something you find at every bar. Magic hat on Tap was also a plus. Moderately priced, but the quality of the meal is worth every penny.
service so bad it was hilarious – I attended a tastings event here where I paid a set price for appetizer and wine tasting. I don't drink wine, so I asked for a soda instead of the wine for my ticket... no dice. I had to pay for the soda. The waiters came out with tiny plates of appetizers, no untensils or plates, just a minimum amount of cocktail napkins. We were joking 'bout that Adam Sandler movie where his grandmother served meatballs right into his hand.
I paid $21 for a pita chip with hummous, a slice of pizza so small that a couple of sugar packets could've beaten the heck out of it, a tiny piece of spanikopita that several people had their hands on before I got to it, and a piece of food that looked like a small cork with corn in it.
This was a publicity event for them!! hilarious.
PS. It's NOT tapas! – Just re-reading some of the other reviews here, I wanted to enlighten people. I work in the restaurant business...as it says on their menu, Sauce is NOT, repeat NOT a tapas place. They do small plates, yes, but not Tapas. The food is a mix of Mediterranean flavors, not specifically Spanish food. Tapas are smaller servings, really just snacks. These plates are small, yes, but it's easy to make a great meal out of 1 or 2 plates. The food is fresh and flavorful and makes a great party when you have to share and discuss. It's a shame that people are so willing to say negative things that aren't accurate. This place is for the sophistocated palate!
Sauce in Davis is a WELCOME change – Davis Square is full of bars and restaurants. Sauce's sophistocated style is a really welcome change. It's sort of like tapas, with small portions that are meant to share - really well prepared and fresh and offers a lot of variety. We loved the atmosphere instantly. It's comfortable, yet offers a bit of class to the usual bar scene. The menu is meant to offer "small plates", which are great for sharing. We ordered a variety of items and sampled each. We took our time, enjoyed each new plate, and were actually able to sit and have a conversation without some drunk guy bumping into us. Everything was really good. We were very impressed with the wine selection and had a nice bottle of red to share for the table. For dessert, the creme caramel was heavenly! We were very happy with our experience and will be back for more!
