Surprisingly GREAT! – We avoided this place b/c we hadn't heard much since it used to the Beach House. But my fiance took me for my birthday dinner here and it was AWESOME! I love great versions of plain food, and between the super flavorful corn soup, to the awesome artichoke salad, to the amazing mac and cheese and super tasty lemon chicken, I was totally in heaven! It's hard for me to find things i like on so many menus in LA, when restaurants try to be so fancy and have all these weird dishes and gross seasonings. I loved it here, the waiter was great, wine was great, and all of our food was wonderful. My fiance is a "foodie" and had the halibut and also thought it was great. Between Brass Cap, Giorgio's and the Hideout, this corner is my new home!!

Electric Atmosphere and Good Service!!!! – Having gone in to the Brass Cap shortly after it opened, I must say this place has improved dramatically!!! The food and the service the first time where lack luster at best!!! Which is a shame because it's so close to my boyfriend and I's apartment. I went there for a friends birthday and was disappointed with just about everything expect the cool interior. So, deciding to give this place another shot, I met a group of friends there on Friday and was presently surprised!!! Which might be the reason the place was packed!!! Despite the crowd Michael, whom is the maiterd, was warm and welcoming at the front door and seated us promptly at a great table. We actually needed our reservation, which was a suprise. The first time around you could have heard a pin drop. Our sever was cool, and seemed much more knowledgeable about everything and was on it this time round. I'm not sure if they adjusted their pricing recently but it seemed much more reasonable than my first experience and priced like a neighborhood restaurant should be. The wine list also seemed to have more affordable options, which is cool cuz my boyfriend and I love to share a bottle over dinner. In fact the server recommended this great inexpensive malbec that everyone loved. What ever there doing I hope they keep it up!! I've convinced my skeptic boyfriend to take me on a date there next weekend!!! We'll see how it goes.

Not so good! – My wife, daughter and i went last night. The outdoor patio lacked in that it was only yards from the PCH and indoor diners were coming out to smoke. So we moved! Not a problem. our waitress "suggested" rather strongly that we consider a particular wine that she thought was wonderful. Fortunately, I had her point it out on the wine list. It listed at $135.00!! Sorry, but that started the evening off poorly since I assumed that I could get a good bottle of wine in the $50-60 category. We decided to not order wine. Her attitude after that was definitely "smug". However she suggested that since we were not having wine, we should have an appetizer, namely the salad (artichoke hearts, shitake mushrooms, etc.) We conceded, but judged that at $18.50, it could have been bigger although it was good.

We would not recommend this restaurant and we are individuals who have eaten all over the world in upscale settings.

Hidden Gem – I have eaten here a half dozen times and love it, good French comfort food, a cool bar, and relaxed atmosphere make this a place I will return to again.

Great Food, Good Looking Waiters – Unbelievable food. Took a little long to get to us but so worth the wait. Surprisingly cool bar scene. I think it has something to do with the hot staff. Maitre'd was a bit rude but I'm glad we stayed because everyone else was so nice so overall great service. Don't miss the Macoroni and Cheese, the pumpkin tamale, or the lamb.

Brass C-R-A-P – Truly, the place is awful: 1) 45 minute wait for a reservation; 2) surly host (the owner's son, literally he shrugged when we asked after 30 minutes of waiting when our table would be ready); 3) obscenely overpriced food ($46 for a NY strip steak?!?); and, worst of all, 4) the food was just bad (wet lardon salad; greasy onion rings; bolognese left me queasy; a hambuger was left half-eaten at our table). I could go on, but why bother? Even for LA, this is bad; skip it.

Worth a return visit – The decor and service is wonderful. The food is very good. Everytime I've been there, it has been dead, and I fear that is because of the high prices (especially for the wine). They do have a tasting menu, which at $60 seems very reasonable (although I haven't tried that yet). I wish they would tweak their focus and become more of a bistro. LA has enough fancy french restaurants; we need more good casual french bistros/brasseries. Regardless, BrassCap is definitely worth a visit (or two).

Legendary Dining Experience – Mmm, veal stew. It warmed my heart. This is a place which has transformed the now defunct Beach House into a stroll down the St. Germain. I wanted to sample the entire menu, from the cassolet to the french press coffee. The food just keeps on getting better and better. The service was snappy and knowledgable about the menu. The only thing lacking in a sommelier, taste vin around his neck, sipping from the massive wine list.

I can't wait for The Brass Cap Cookbook.

A Work Of Art In Progress – This place is a work of art. Amazing attention to detail. When I find a date I will take her here for sure. The food is okay and the waitress acted too French for my taste. I ate the escargot which were amazing and the duck confit was flavorless and tough. The hot apple tart was spectacular. Definately a special occassion type of place. The need to work on service. The waitress kept misspronouncing the menu items and the maitre d' couldn't have been colder. The art on the walls shows impeccible taste and the bar is stunning.
