Let me start by saying that I LOVE my American Bulldog, Carlie, that I purchased from this place. She is beautiful, hilarious and such a sweet girl!

However, this place is EXTREMELY deceiving!

First of all, they guarantee you all sorts of wonderful things that are "included with the price of dogs" such as health warranties. What they fail to mention is that you only get these things if you bring your dog to their approved vet within THREE days of purchase. Luckily, my boyfriend was actually reading the paperwork as the sales person was going over it because she completely skipped over that detail!

They also drill this idea of a FREE first vet visit into your head which is another lie. Although I loved the staff at Mohackny Animal Hospital in Vista and did not mind paying to ensure the health of my dog, the exam was NOT free. They perform a required fecal test which is $30, plus any other treatment that your dog might need. When I purchased my dog, her nails looked like talons, her ears were dirty and severely scratched due to her long nails, and she smelled like she had never been bathed. (By the way, she was already SIX months old when we purchased her.) These are all routine things that California Pets should have kept up with. My dog ended up getting her nails trimmed for an additional $14, and an ear treatment and cleaning for another $56. So this FREE visit that they promise to everyone, ended up costing us $100.

Another big upset that the Vet told me was that my dog had not yet been vaccinated for Rabies. We specifically asked them at California Pets if she had already been vaccinated for Rabies and their response was that ALL of their dogs get vaccinated for Rabies before they are sold!

Overall, I was extremely dissatisfied with the quality of California Pets. Although it may seem like a nice store with friendly staff, they are all simply full of SH*T!

Terrible Pet Store – I visited the Escondido store, and had a confrontation with the store manager 1/1/11. I was holding a small puppy that was sick and I was told to stand in the back to wait for help, as I was back there, I found six large crates, with dogs in deplorable condition, newspaper, soiled paper, and the dogs barking trying to get out, six crates, three on the bottom, three on the top. They were in the back of the store. Also, the puppy I was olding was about a pound, pom. female, she was caughing loudly and having a hard time breathing. The manager took her and said she had a cold. I'm very familiar with animals, and that dog did not just have a cold. He told me, "you can leave now." and pointed towards the front door. My daughter was with me, I was very upset with how I was treated by the manager, but more upset at what I witnessed, the filth these over priced poor animals lived in was disgusting. I have already filed a complaint with the health dept and peta, and I will be back to document more photos. I called to get the managers name, I told him I would be filing complaint and the only thing he said to me was "are you threatening me?" I told him it was not a threat, and I would scream to anyone who will listen to me about the California Pets store in Escondido. What I saw was very, very upsettng and no animal should be treated or live the way they are being housed at that store. My complaints will not stop until I'm heard, I have already started a petition against the store, and will forward it to the health dept as well as others until its fully investigated and we can have some sort of solution to how these poor animals are treated at this store. The store smells, terribly, the animals are filthy, living in smaller quarters for sale and in their own soil, witnessed throughout the store. There were sick puppies in the kennels, and although I appreciate these animals are for sale, they deserve to be in clean living quarters, at best. I witnessed a puppy, maltese, trying to get water from a spiket, that was dry and no water available for the pupply, it had wet newspaper and feces throughout its kennel. In my opinion, the local animals shelter takes better care of its animals. I will be reachig out to anyone who will take the time to investigate this store, to at least have them clean the living quarters for these animals and to look into the ones that appear to be very unhealthy. These animals can't speak, someone needs to speak for them.

HORRIBLE STORE - PUPPY MILL DOGS! – I can pretty much guarantee you that any positive review on this site was left by an employee of the store. I bought a puppy from California Pets last year at the recommendation of a family member. She had a lab that she had purchased there. The lab was an awesome dog (2 years old at the time) so I decided to check California Pets out. I found an adorable little shih tzu puppy and fell in love. 2 months later, my little dog became incredibly ill - lethargic, not eating, vomiting. I rushed her to my vet who informed me that she had a congenital defect. They said that surgery may help but it may not. I couldn't let her die so I paid the $3000 for the surgery. Unfortunately, my little girl was too far gone and she passed away just a day after the surgery. I paid over $1400 for this puppy 2 months earlier and, more importantly, I loved her very much. My vet informed me that that California Pets gets their dogs from puppy mills. I looked up puppy mills online and am absolutely horrified that I supported such an awful place. I am still too heartbroken to get another dog but I will definitely be going to a shelter when I do.

Oh - and the lab that belongs to my cousin has developed severe allergies and ear infections (a result of poor breeding) and was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. She now takes 3 different medications every day and she's only 3 years old.

Best pet store in California – I would just like to say I have had only the best experience with California Pets. It is exciting to think that people even in selected pet stores are passionate about their animals. You can tell by the cleanliness and the constant socialization. Thank You California Pets for your passion of animals. Who else does Adoptions, Sales, Training and everything else you do for animals? I am hands down pleased! My family thanks you!
