Nice appearance but horrible food! – Very nice appearance, however, take a look above the dining area- the fabric covering the ceiling is very dirty and dusty! We just arrived at opening today (Sunday) and the floors were very dusty and dirty as if not cleaned yet! Not to mention how unsanitary to leave the stack of unused plates on the table for customers use. What if I am hacking and sneezing- now the dishes are contaminated. I am really shock the health dept allows this!
The waiter hovers over you even after you explain that you would like a few minutes to review the menu since this was the first time.
I ordered the combination (savlaka-chicken and pork, and moussaka). The chicken and pork were very dry and had no flavor. The moussaka was very delicious. The waitor asked if I would like to substitute but we had already waited about 25 minutes for the food, and I said no. It was our anniversary and both my wife and I were very disappointed for the taste and quality of the food! The waiter made us believe that he was making up the poor food by giving us the dessert- fellas: we ordered two dinners and the special was the donuts (or whateer they were) complimentary. We are used to the dishes from other Greek restaurants being very moist and tender- this was like rawhide! We will not be back!
Fresh, perfectly prepared authentic Greek food with great service – The keys to a great restaurant are:
Don't take on more than you can handle
Use fresh ingredients that take advantage of the local supplies
Cook everything possible fresh
Prepare the food consistently without over or under cooking
Don't make the guests feel intimidated by the menu, especially in a non-American restaurant
Get the food out in a reasonable amount of time
Opa does all of these things flawlessly, all while staying true to their Greek roots. When I first saw the HUGE menu, I thought that they had taken on too many items. However, many of them are variations on the same types of food (grape leaves, lamb, meats, eggplant, etc.). This is a huge positive, because they have found a brilliant way to create a huge, varied menu without overstressing the cooking staff. This is the sign of a genius owner and/or head chef. So right there - HUGE plus.
I order an appetizer, vegetable, a 3-item combination plate, and dessert (I was REALLY hungry!!). My wife ordered an appetizer, vegetable, stuffed grape leaves entree, and dessert. Between the two of us, every items was flawlessly prepared. The chicken was not overcooked but was thoroughly cooked as well as nice and juicy. The lamb was soft, tender, pink in the middle, and full of flavor. The stuffed grape leaves were, to steal an Italian term, al dente, and the stuffing meat was cooked to a perfect medium. Let me repeat that -- the GROUND STUFFING was cooked to a perfect medium. That is downright difficult, especially with a 3/4ths full dining room on a Tuesday. The dessert was fresh, light, and very rich without feeling heavy.
The waitstaff are cheerful and flawless - I'd go into more detail if I had more room in this review.
Combine all that with a great wine list, and you've got a 5-star restaurant. Everyone will enjoy themselves here, so get yourself to Vernon Hills and have a great Greek dinner!
Not a great experience~ – I recently ate here with my family (three kids 5,7, and 15) for a special occasion. The server was extremely slow and seemed to be annoyed when asked questions. Since not all items on the menu are translated completely- selection was difficult. Wine took fifteen minutes from order to receipt (1 glass). The saganiaki was excellent, as were the main dishes. I ordered a steak and was not asked how I wanted it cooked. When I asked how it was prepared the waiter then asked me how I wanted it (with an eye roll). After several instances throughout the meal with not bringing ordered items the waiter seemed especially annoyed when he was aked by the hostess to return to out table. When the check came (incosistent with the food to our favor) the waiter felt the need to come over and explain that the next time we came back to ask for him by name and he would show us great service. I explained that this would not occur. He seemed very puzzled. hhhmmm. Even though I love the food here I will not be returning any time soon. As a side note- I love Greek food. I don not appreciate being talked down to by anyone- especially someone seeking a tip from me. My tip- BE POLITE!
JUST LIKE HOME COOKED FOOD!!! – The food was excellent. I had pastichio it was to die for! The rest of my family tried all sorts of plates which i dont remember the greek names (thank you to the funny and helpful waiter that described each dish) but we left the restaurant satisfied and full!!! Perfect
Wonderful service, good food – Beautiful restaurant, friendly service. Can't beat the dinner on the patio by the lake for a little bit of Greece in Ilinois.
beautiful place, not so good food – our family just went here tonight. it was snowing and the restaurant was just gorgeous. A++ for the atmosphere! really. appetizer was great, salad and humus, etc. but the main dishes took so long. we had appetizers, and watched other tables get food before our food came, so we thought. the server brought the food to the wrong table. so one of us ate two french fries on the plate before they took it away to serve it at another table. and when our main dishes came, we were famished and delighted. but the food was just too greasy. we ordered the following dishes:
leg of lamb,
trio (moussaka, leg of lamb and ground meat wrapped in grape leaves),
daily special - lamb dish with lemon potatoes,
mix of appetizers (ordered as main dish)
and a child's spaghetti with meat sauce.
only the three and a half year enjoyed her food. all of us were somehow full but really disappointed by the food.
as for the dessert - baklava was so yummy! but flan like dessert - not so good. it wasn't flan, nor custard, but a odd in between. it was sweet sweet dessert.
i'd only go back there if i were in the mood for their salad and appetizers and not really hungry.
Awesome food – My husband and I discovered Opa about a year ago, and we absolutely love this place. We come here at least once or twice a month and can't get enough of the food. The Taramosalata is excellent, and the Lamb Chop is to die for. Most fish dishes are very good too. Make sure you order the Opa Cheesecake; it is out of this world :-) Service is always great at Opa.
So good, don't forget a reservation! – We went without a reservation and they were amazingly nice and accomodating. The food is superb. The outside patio is very pretty as it overlooks a lake. The fish is my favorite but my family swears by the skirt steaks and lamb chops. Opaa!
Greek specialties, including bountiful fresh seafood, draw crowds to this vast Hellenic haven with a modern, airy feel. – The Scene
This Vernon Hills Greek outpost is casual, modern and bustling. The soaring, draped ceiling and white-on-white design create the festive feel of a wedding tent. An expanse of windows overlooking Bear Lake contributes to the airy feel. Three dining rooms (one with fireplace) are packed on weekends, putting a strain on the well-intentioned servers.
A fresh fish display bears testament to the broad, ever-changing seafood specials, but there's no shortage of lamb dishes and other Greek classics; the house signature is juicy spit-roasted chicken. Salty, crusty saganaki (flaming cheese) is "opa!"-ed throughout the room. Whole grilled red snapper, boned tableside, is perfectly simple; rich, meaty moussaka outdoes many of the Greektown spots. "Se pilo" offerings, stewed and served in clay pots, include shellfish with orzo in a piquant tomato sauce. Desserts include gooey, chocolate-drenched baklava and creamy cheesecake with crispy shredded phyllo.
