COMFORT MEETS EXCITEMENT IN AN AMAZING SETTING AT WAHOO GRILL
Even those rainy nights in Georgia can’t dampen the thrill of dining at Wahoo Grill, in fact it adds to the ambience that Pam Ledbetter has created in her Decatur eatery. As an early visionary in helping to shape Decatur into a fine dining mecca, Pam transformed a dilapidated space on West College Avenue back in 2004 into a welcoming neighborhood bistro that’s unpretentious and quite laid back.
The one thing that is noticeable about the food offerings is that they are not over-the-top nor taken to extremes- they are what they are and what they are is really exceptional. The flash fried Polenta with local mushrooms and a roasted red pepper coulis is amazing. The goat cheese and chive polenta is fried to the point where the outside is crisp but the inside is warm and velvety – a nice yin and yang effect. The Fried Calamari is plentiful and should be shared if you are willing. The lightly battered tender squid with fried sweet banana peppers is tossed in a spicy hoisin and sweet, yet tart, mayhaw-citrus sauce - so many intriguing flavors. The not to be missed appetizer is the Crab Bisque; this is ecstasy in a bowl. Fresh lump crabmeat is blended into a light cream broth with a perfect touch of sherry making for a rich yet soothing mouth feel.
The menu at Wahoo focuses on fresh seafood, but there is an assortment of delicacies for land-lovers like Southern Fried Chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. The succulent Charleston Shrimp and Grits is a wonderful representation of this classic recipe. The plump white shrimp are sautéed than simmered in a spicy tomato cream sauce that’s served over South Carolina’s Adluh stone ground white grits that are given a lift with a touch of cheddar cheese. Before the bowl disappears, ask for some grilled Holeman & Finch baguette slices for dipping in this sassy sauce; it’s a yum. The fresh Georgia Trout is another must. The perfectly sautéed filet is topped with a pesto butter and glazed pecans making the mild tasting fish quite heavenly. The Georgia Peach Salad screams good old southern living. Over a bed of crispy baby leaf spinach are slices of juicy yellow peaches, grilled shrimp, cherry tomatoes, crumbled blue cheese, glazed pecans that’s drizzled with a lively brown sugar- cider vinaigrette. If this dish doesn’t get out at least one “Wahoo” I don’t know what will.
Wahoo Grill - Fantastic place for brunch! – Pam the owner accommodated about 30 of us from The Atlanta Running Meetup a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday morning for brunch. I made reservations with her about a week before, and we couldn't have asked for better service. The food was fantastic, and the staff were professional and courteous. At one point Pam came over to our tables and asked if the temperature in the room was comfortable for us. Pam takes a great deal of pride in what she does, and it certainly shows. I highly recommend it.
Wahoo! Grill – On Saturday night four of us ate at Wahoo! Restaurant in Decatur. We enjoyed the interesting, eclectic décor; the comfortable informal atmosphere; the friendly, helpful staff; the delicious food. We began with pomegranate martinis, which were smooth, sweet, light, fruity, which is how I like them. I had scallops piccata, with rice and asparagus, as I enjoy the taste of lemon. The scallops were perfectly cooked, which is hard to do; restaurants tend to overcook them a bit. They were a little breaded but not excessively so. The rice and asparagus were perfectly cooked for my taste as well. My dinner companion thought his Scottish salmon was “excellent”. For dessert we had bread pudding and chocolate bliss cake, both delicious. We sat and talked and watched the MARTA train whiz by in the rainy night outside, lights illuminating the darkness. Wahoo! is a lovely place to go with friends.
Great Winter Menu! – We just dined at Wahoo last week. They have their new winter menu out. It has some fabulous things on the menu. As much as I love their fish entrees, the pork loin is to die for! I would not have chosen the sides it came with, but I ended up really enjoying the combination of flavors! Guess that is what makes a good chef, and why I keep going back to one of my favorite restaurants!
See you there!!!
In the neighborhood – Wahoo-A Decatur grill. When you first see the place, you think to yourself, hmmm? Once you enter, you take it all back. It's so cozy and homey. You are welcomed by a very enthusiastic staff that will continue to WOW you with its ability to make your experience special. The food is EXCEPTIONAL. I can't say enough about it. I even tried the Eden Farms Pork Belly. Now this is something that is unique but what Chef Christian Speigel and his staff have done with this dish is marvelous. I indulged in the Seared Blue Fin Tuna for my entree and my date had the Pastachio Encrusted Mahi Mahi with Sea Scallops which I also tasted. It was fantastic. The Mahi was so fresh. We finished the nmeal with the Bliss Cake. We were told by by the that it was made "inhouse" and was a recipe of the owners. He also mentioned that the Bread Pudding is also made "inhouse." So we'll definately have to go back to find out if the Bread Pudding is as good as the Bliss Cake.It was truly WONDERFUL. If you like great food and great service, go and see the little gem. It's definately worth the time.
Wahoo! Great Food Great Service Excellent Atmosphere! – Cool place to try in Decatur: This is one of my favorite restaurants in Decatur. It has an upscale menu at reasonable prices. I've been twice for lunch and once for dinner. Because the restaurant is small, the dinner crowd makes it quite noisy and crowded as in any great restaurant, but it was still a lovely experience. I'm looking forward to the warmer weather, because I really want to check out the patio out back. It looks like it would be wonderful for intimate, romantic dinners and probably not as noisy. The food is great. I've head the mahi mah twice and really enjoyed it. I've also had the shirmp and grits, which I enjoyed and tasted the seared Tuna (which was excellent). That will be my next entree to try. The service has always been excellent. So, if you are looking for a small out of the way place that serves very good food and has a really nice atmosphere, check out the Wahoo Grill.
So So. I cook much better food at home, and I'm no chef. – I've been twice now. Both times were so so. I'm not very picky, but the food so far has been consistantly bland. My chicken was bland and it was a dish I cook much better at home (I wasn't expecting something I cook at home.) For the price, I thought it would be tasty, served hot, and at least plated nicely. The whole plate was blah and served lukewarm.
My husband ordered the special pasta. It was more bland than my dish. Nothing to write home about.
The $10 simple ceasar salad, not including meat, was the size of a side salad. It was a bit tiny.
The calamari was the same stuff you get at any typical restaurant and the chocolate cake tasted grocery store bought.
The service was very good.
I do recommend you ask to sit in the main dining room. We got there early, on both visits, and were sat in the back, which seems to be where they stick all the little kiddies. Being a table of all older adults, I would have thought we would be put in the empty front vs surrounding us with 3 tables of very small screaming children on the echoing patio.
32nd Wedding Anniversary not Wahoo! – I recommended this restaurant to my husband on our 32nd anniversary. Though the food was good, service was friendly, and the atmosphere nice; it was not the best evening for us. The food arrived over 1 and half hours late and when it arrived, the trout was missing and the side i ordered was on my husband's plate. The bread pudding was good too. Maybe it was a bad night. Not Wahoo for us yet...we may give it another try.
Thank you so much for your feedback from your latest experience with Wahoo! Grill. I am happy to know you enjoyed the food and service, but I would like to address your frustrations with the amount of time it took for your food to arrive. Please contact me at email@example.com so we can further discuss your feedback and make it up to you and your husband. Again, thank you for your comments and your patronage.
One Of My Favorites – I've been going to Wahoo's now for the past years. It's one of those places you reserves for special occassions with family and friends, or to just drop in for a good meal and a good glass of wine. The food is good and the staff is outstanding. If you don't believe me, try it yourself?
