Still rockin and rollin – I am the one who started bella stella in 2002. Some of my first customers remain customers there today. I know this because whenever I shop there, I run into one I know. We who shop there are pleased with the comfortable atmosphere and quality necessities we need to raise a family. Laurel bought the store from me and it has evolved into a place that is always busy, always full of great inventory, some used, all discounted. She also is a lot watmer and hipper than I ever was, and she knows alot about the different baby wearing techniques. Bella Stella has a huge inventory of baby slings. You can find what you need there, so do it shop local first.
Curious onslaught of negative reviews – It has been a very long time since bella stella has gotten any negative reviews. As the owner, I am concerned by the recent barrage criticism, and have checked in with my customers to make sure they are still being served. As far as we can tell, nothing has changed. As always, I strive to provide a business that serves my community and appreciate any comments that help bella stella improve. Should anybody have any problems with my store, myself or my staff, I ask that you bring it to my attention or shop any of Portland's other fine resale stores for children such as Mama's n Papas, Milagros, Hoot-N-Annie or Piccolina. I would hate to think that someone was manipulating the Citysearch forum to purposely degrade my business, however, it is difficult to reach another conclusion based on this unusual activity.
AWESOME SHOP!!!! – I bring my kids outgrown clothes to Bella Stella on a regular basis. I love the owner and staff, I love the gear both used and new for sale in the shop and I have NEVER had anything but an excellent experience there. If you are a new mom, Bella Stella has the best selection of baby carriers by far in the city and a knowledgeable staff to help you pick out the very best one for your particular needs. Laurel, the owner of the shop, is amazing and super involved in her community which makes Bella Stella even more of an appealing place for me to support and spend my money.
Disappointed – Sorry to say I couldn't find a thing in this store. Cute but new clothing is expensive and consignment pieces are few and not worth the prices. Store clerk too pushy, was not very understanding when my daughter started to cry when a display fell over on her.
Not another place like it. – This store became my local clothing store for my son when we moved into the neighborhood. Not only are the staff knowledgeable and friendly...but they remember you AND your child. It is obvious they understand that if one is shopping in a resale store, it is because they can't necessarily afford a $40 pair of pants for their kid. I have found Imp and Elves, Egg, Tea, and Appaman there regularly, for $6.99 resale usually. My son has fun there and I have fun there. They have an area for him to play and welcome his bursts of energy. I sell his old clothes and have been using credit ever since. I love this store. I don't go anywhere else.
Great overstock from Posh Baby, BabySoy, Eleven, etc – I have become quite the regular at Bella Stella's after driving by and seeing the cutest darn clothes in the window. I frequently bring in the 'hand-me-downs' and they don't always take things that I thought were a sure deal so I try again with another employee and/or then move on to another resale shop. The fact that they are picky makes the shopping experience all the better. Their resale clothes are of good quality and not your every day Carters, etc.
Bella Stella's is always my first stop. They have a great selection of new and used clothes and shoes, yes, NEW shoes at discount prices! I love the overstock from Posh Baby and the Baby Soy clothes line. My new favorite is Speesees, the cotton is soooo soft.
Though I bought my Ergo before I knew Bella Stella existed I have gone in to have them help me adjust it for a better fit. And sometimes they just look at me know I need an adjustment! The employees are friendly and I seem to always strike up good conversation with the other parents in the store.
My only minor complaint is the parking. Broadway is quite busy so I try to park on a side street:O(
Oh, I'm loving the new big kid resale, too, now that my 'little' girl is growing up!
pleased newcomer – I stumbled on this little gem yesterday when I was shopping for my twin nephew/neice's birthday. I don't know how common this is for children's clothing stores these days, but the place has everything. I left with cool stuff and spent much less than I thought I had to. Just giving a heads up if anyone is looking for a good place for kids clothes.
New Location is Beeyootiful! – Bella Stella just opened a second location a block down from the original, and it is gorgeous! The same slings, resale, and cute stuff for babies/little ones, but in a shiny new storefront. They told me that they will be reopening the old spot soon for bigger kids. Big kids resale! Looking forward to it.
Why? Laurel, Ella Bee and awesome stuff! – Owner, Laurel is why Bella Stella is such a great neighborhood resale clothing store. She is a mom who loves rad clothes at a great price. I found a pair of Adidas Samba's for my little boy barely used for practically nothing.
Another great feature of store is that they carry a lot of beautifully hand-made and really unique items from local designers (I was one of them!). She also carries overruns from high quality manufacturers.
Huge toy selection, new and used...
Best kids resale in Portland. Hands down. Love it!
Cute used basics, Euro and boutique clothing. Great prices! – The first time that I came to Bella Stella I realized that it was different than a lot of resale kid's shops--friendly, clean, well-run and totally lacking that air of frazzled clutter that tends to take over many other places. And it seemed to have everything I needed—from a new, Ergo carrier and organic cloth diapers for my newborn to totally cool butterfly tutus and Melissa and Doug art supplies for my older child. Not to mention all the super cute clothing for both of them.
Also, when I called to see about selling clothing, the owner said I could come right in and I didn't need an appointment. I love that since with two kids it is really hard to know exactly when I am getting out of the house. Then, when I came, she looked at the stuff right away and priced it quickly. When you are accompanied in the store by a grumpy four year old, this sort of quick customer service is worth its weight in gold.
Bella Stella's clothing is a mix of locally made new clothing and toys, and various hip brands at prices that seem even lower than wholesale. The owner has clearly mastered the art of finding deals and passing them on. And the used clothing is full of treasures. Um, an Oilily dress for $10? Elefanten mary janes for $8? A brand new Cakewalk jacket for $12. Having deep roots in the neighborhood clearly means that the good stuff comes to her shop first. And now I do the same, since I now that she always gives me the best possible price on my stuff (and I can always find another place to bring the complete line of Carter’s truck-themed onesies that I got at the baby shower). And she never gets mad when I start to paw through the as-of-yet un-priced stuff she just bought from another mom.
I should also mention that the owner and employees actually know something about kid’s stuff and have the goodwill and patience to pass on this information to their customers. They will happily spend fifteen minutes with you helping you learn how to wear a baby carrier—even if it is one that you bought at another store. (I was once in Fred Meyer and the owner kindly stopped me to let me know that I had my sling on backwards--and she did it in a 100 percent totally non-annoying way. She clearly just seems to care.)
I have shopped at Bella Stella for over three years now and could write a novel about how great it is and what an asset it is to the community. Now if we could get a crosswalk at Broadway and 28th, it would be perfect!
