I used Gass camera last year when my T1i sensor got incredibly dusty and I then followed internet instructions on how to clean it myself (and failed). Though he gave me some gentle teasing about attempting to do such delicate work myself, he then accepted my camera, and as an out of town person, offered me the courtesy of doing it as soon as he was finished with the project he was in the middle of and giving me a call when it was completed. I went to visit a friend about a half hour from his shop and was surprised at how fast the turnaround was.
When I picked up my camera he gave me instructions on how to safely clean the sensor the next time and when to realize I was licked. I was surprised at the cost of the repair - it was lower than I had estimated. I loved visiting there and talking to him about the many cameras he had there (and seeing them). Made me miss my own film days.
Would definitely recommend him. It will be a sad day when they finally decide that, no matter how much the area needs them, they really deserve to retire. Kansas City will lose a valuable resource when that happens.
Friendly, Honest with great integrity. Tackles anything! – I first was referred to Clarence via an internet posting about a rather obscure camera from the 1950s (an Aires III). Apparently, Clarence could fix it. Having a rather beat up and decrepit version of such a camera, I sent it to him. He restored it to perfection! And, the price was very reasonable.
I have since relied upon him, and referred others to him for all manner of film cameras. He is willing to take on almost any job. He will also tell you if you shouldn't buy something - save you big money right there. I've used his services to correct problems not addressed by some of the big name specialist repairers out there - the Rolleiflex, Leica, Zeiss experts. Clarence has fixed what they were supposed to have fixed in the first place, but didn't do so great a job on.
Now I'm about to send him an ancient camera from 1938, built just before the war in Dresden, Germany. I know he's up to the job!
As for the review from the man with vinegar in his blood, just view the facts objectively. The man has never had any dealings with Clarence. He is a do-it- yourselfer who is probably bitter because he's bitten off more than he can chew. I asked Clarence about his "no parts sales" policy. The reason is, these self-repair people used to buy his part, then break the part trying to install it wrongly and then demand a refund, or else come back with the original broken part and demand a refund. He's a small businessman, not a patsy.
Having said that, Clarence is a straight shooter. He is not anyone's fool. He is very friendly, honest, and has undoubted integrity. He'll even send me back the old parts if he's replaced parts.
Take the word of his actual customers. Clarence and Betty are great people to do business with. The repair is done right, and quickly. If something goes wrong later on, Clarence has often corrected it free of charge. He stands behind his service. Such people should be patronized, and not slandered. I will continue to use Clarence's services for all of my cameras, even though I have to ship from out of state.
Only the Best and Most Courteous – Clarence has done work for me for a number of years. I have only known him to be kind, courteous, trustworthy and helpful. He has always given me excellent advice on cameras. I think that this gentleman (Derek64055), may have been having a bad day and misinterpreted Clarence's advice. I know he doesn't sell parts and does very little work on digitial cameras which is probably why he said that he may or may not be able to fix the gentleman's camera. Anyone interested in film camera repair or in purchasing a camera should give Gass Camera a try. For that matter, if you just need sound advice on purchasing a quality camera, give Clarence a call. You won't regret it!
Rude and Arrogant – Another Camera shop gave me their number because they didn't have the part I needed for my lens. I called them and spoke with Clarence. He was rude, told me they didn't sell parts, but if I wanted to bring the lens in he would look at it and he "may or may not" fix it for me. When I told him I already had the lens apart and just needed the part he made some rude huffing noise and told me again that he wouldn't sell me a part. So instead of getting any business from me, they get none. I also called the other camera shop and told them what happened and they said they wouldn't be sending any customer's over there anymore.
Not sure why they would take no business and a bad name over just selling a part.
Best KC Camera Repair, Honest Owners, Excellent Service – Excellent Work and Honest Folks
My husband's camera is his baby. Clarence and Betty Gass repaired it and cleaned it before we traveled to Israel on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation - the camera never worked better (it's more than 10 years old!). Everyone on the trip asked my husband to take pictures for them, so the pressure was on. His pictures turned out beautifully. Oh yes - also, we asked Clarence about buying a new $2,000 camera from him and he advised against it. He said ours would do the trick and with Clarence's help -- it sure did.
