A great neighborhood wine bar and restaurant in Roscoe Village. Come summer, they have one of the best patios in town.
Cozy spot to sit back with a glass of wine - try a flight if you can't make up your mind.
Stellar Food & Wine Experience – Volo spoils me for ordering wine almost anywhere else. Their list is eclectic and ever changing, and is easy to read and always delivers. Chef Stephen (from MK) delivers seasonally changing fare that is definitely among the top spots in the city - all nestled into this cozy/boutique spot. Summertime delivers probably the best hidden garden patio the city has to offer. Comfortable, friendly and unpretentious - weeknights are low key too. I love these guys!
Overpriced undertasty – I wanted to like this place based on my friends positive reviews but our table of four visit ended up costing $260 before tip for very mediocre food. I was befuddled at the check amount. The food was very average without taste. dishes such as the steak tartare and black angus beef over pasta were completely devoid of flavor- very bland. The cheese plate for $16 was paltry portion size. The wine was very expensive. A check of that amount should have been a four course dinner not an average night out with bland tasting food. Very disappointed. Do not recommend.
great food, great wine – The food and wine where killer. The environment was a bit loud and you are elbow to elbow with the adjacent tables.
The dishes are pretty small but well prepared. I respect a man that takes pride in his work the chef was that man. I stood and watched him for a few minutes and was very impressed. I would recommend the roasted beets, steak tartare or the polenta.
We drank the 03 barbaresco, it was killer. The port was to my pleasure as well, I had the porta rocha 1975.
Creative food, but a bit overpriced – The atmosphere and offerings of this small restaurant in Roscoe Village were generally pleasant, but the portion sizes are tiny and it is quite expensive for what you get! I ordered an the lamb, and it was excellent! The sauces were wonderful and the meat was tender and flavorful. Only flaw, it was tiny! It was about the size of an appetizer! My date ordered the kobe beef, but his was cooked in a very plain manner - kind of a shame for such good quality meat! It reminded me of a stew. It was also pretty small. Unfortunately, after an appetizer, entree, and wine, we were still hungry.
Overall, I would recommend it as a nice place to go with some tasty offerings, but if you're hungry, you should probably go somewhere else.
So much fun! – My sister recently put together a birthday dinner for me here and it was amazing! The service was top notch and the food and wine were excellent. Highly recommended for a big group, so many interesting dishes to share. I will be back.
Attention port snobs – I find it amusing that anyone would complain about $30 for a port flight that contained an 86 colheita, a 75 colheita and a 50 year tawny. Who else has this? You get what you pay for. Volo never dissapoints with quality for the right price.
Fantastic Food and Wine – We went to Volo mainly because it is the only place in Chicago that has roasted marrow bones, but everything else turned out to be fantastic too. The wine list is broad and there are a number of very reasonably priced bottles. The food was wonderful, the marrow bones were especially great as were the mussels and the corn soup (which I'm still thinking about a day later). The port flight was also wonderful, you might think it is pricey at $30, but well worth it and plenty for two to share as an after dinner flight. The last thing I should mention is the service, it was fantastic. Out waitress was attentive and very cheerful despite the crowd. When we asked for some salt for the bones they brought us a number of interesting varieties which was a wonderful surprise. I will certainly be returning to Volo!
Save your money – Volo started out great but continues to go down hill at a rapid pace. The wine list is good - not huge and the food is small - even for tapas (don't go even remotely hungry. Truly though, if I wanted to drink a great bottle of wine while listening to Guns and Roses and surrounded by relatively obnoxious people I could just sit on the Edens for an hour, buy a bottle and crank up my stereo on my back deck. Even then it would be better (and I could have saved on the overly marked up wine - i.e. Te Hira Pinot Noir which cost as much for a glass as a bottle at retail). We tried it 4 times - once was good - there was no one there.
Best Wine Bar in Chicago – Volo is my favorite wine bar in Chicago. I first visited Volo for a wine tasting. I would highly recommend attending their wine tastings as it provides for a great time and is a great deal. For $15 you get to try several wines and munch on tasty appetizers. In the spring, summer, and fall, you can sit in an outdoor cabana and enjoy wine with that special someone or a group of friends.
small plate Italian meets trendy well thought out wine and cuisine! – This place is PACKED on Fridays and Saturdays, but for a very good reason. It was s bit loud, but the space was very trendy, the service excellent and the detail from the presentation of the food to the stemware they serve their amazing selection of wine in was found by my fellow diners to be very exciting. I highly recommend it and the price to service/quality ratio is excellent too.
I dig this place, but try to avoid it on the weekend because it can be a bit stressful, even though they do an excellent job directing traffic, per se.
