Food USE to be great till menu changed – I went here in December 2007 for a xmas party. the food and service was great!! The blackened red snapper was delicious, the seafood was great. But about a month ago I decided to place an order to be delivered to my home. They notified me that they had changed the entire menu. I didnt see anything that I had previously had on the new menu, but I placed an order anyway. I got another fish, but it was bland, tasteless. It didnt impress me. The only thing I enjoyed that order was my 12 layer chocolate cake, which was very good. Overall, its just not the same as it use to be. There are many other neighboring restaurants that top their menu selection.
Poor Execution – South City Grill has ambience and good food but for the high price tag I expect great service as well and that is the one thing they can not seem to execute. Despite the lackluster service the food kept us coming back but unfortunately this will be our last visit to South City Grill. There are too many other restaurants in the area that are able to deliver a comparable menu and ambience along with great service (i.e. Chart House and Arthur's Landing both in Weehawken)
On this particular night our waitress was not attentive and when we asked to order our desserts she said, "I'll be back to take your order because if you give it to me now I'll just forget". She scored some points for being honest but she failed to come back and take our order. About 15 minutes later we flagged down another waiter and asked if we could place our order through him only to find out that they had run out of our dessert option.
In addition the staff at South City Grill needs to be educated on how to handle an emergency situation. As we were leaving a man collapsed in the foyer of the restaurant. The staff did not have the intuitiveness to call 911 and did little to attempt to control the situation. Instead of making room for emergency personnel to take a look at the man they allowed a crowd of onlookers to gather around.
Overall the experience was not horrible but in this area there are so many options and when it comes to choosing one restaurant over another it comes down to execution and that is where South City Grill fails.
very nice ambience, food presentation and flavors. – This is a great restaurant the outside even lifts you up. Inside the way they designed it is captivating in its own way. I love the salads especially the BLT salad and Ceasar salad they taste immaculately fresh. The firecracker chicken and the lobster spring rolls are exceptional the shell is just right and tastes wonderful inside. To be honest though I used to get the crab cake appetizer too but I noticed it tastes a little "fishy". It just so how happened I went to the BoneFish Grill in Secaucus NJ for the first time today. I found that the have even better crab cakes "that don't taste fishy at all" and you get 2 bigger ones instead of one smaller at South City Grill. Anyhow getting back to South City Grill, I noticed that the Macademia Crusted Mahi-Mahi is incredible and to die for. Also the best side dish in my book there is the Sweet Potato Crab Hash. It sounds "odd" but is so awesome that you litterally Can'T stop eating it. My second favorite side dish is the Black Truffle Mac n' Cheese. My addvice though is to Request Extra Cheese and Extra Cream/ Moisture added to the Mac n' Cheese. I also found that there Scallops are exceptional; cooked perfect inside to the tee. Also the bread and butter is great. Once however I had to complain about the bread it tasted spongy and cold like it was laying around. All you have to do is tell your waiter and they will most likely bring one out that came right out of the oven. They are very accomodating that way. Once you go to the South City Grill I promise you that You won't be disappointed in the least bit and it will become a favorite place for sure. Another thing is though there desserts aren't that good. I told the waiter and said he aggreed and that they are working on getting a new pastry chef. For the meantime though I recommend getting a gelato or bubble drink from BABO right outside on the left. Well anyway I hope you give South City Grill a try it really is phenomenal. Take your time in testing the dishes:)
Was in a hurry – It looked a little busy for a Monday lunch so i asked my server what he reccomended, that can get me back to my office in an hour, he then asked me what i enjoyed and steared me towards a Japanese tuna salad (served rare as it should be), then directed my client towards there Maryland-esque Crabcakes. The server explained that he has family in the Baltimore area and he can't tell the difference. Both were excellent choices, and we even had time to share there delicously rich chocolate button cake. Needless to say I'll certainly be back with more of my clients.
WOW! What a place! – Came here for a bday party on Friday night and I was so impressed. The place is visually arresting. So beautiful, so trendy and so laid-back. We parked in the garage around the corner and had the restaurant validate our ticket for free parking. Our party had a semi-private table which was perfect for our affair. The food was great and the live salsa band and DJ were awesome, not at all overwhelming. The place wasn't packed, but there was a bar scene and a few salsa dancers who strutted their stuff on the dancefloor. Its not a club though! I will definitely, definitely be back. Haven't been to a place this good in a while. Good food, drinks, live music and ambience!
