Owner is a Pest and Way too Pushy – Ok the food is good if you can stand being harrassed by the Owner/Manager (Chinese Man) who rudely interrupts the waitress to take your order. He leans on your table and talks over your food, violating your space. Soo close he is spitting on your food when he is talking to you. I order the Texas Crab Rangoon appetizer and everytime he tells me "dip in more sauce" like demanding me.. and it's like back off and let me eat. He is very rude to his wait staff constantly barging his way into their conversations with customers. I love this food but as long as he is around it is a huge thumbs down !!!! He needs to be told off !
THE BEST SUSHI EVER!...WONDERFUL PLACE!!! – MY WIFE AND I GO THERE AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH. THE DRAGON ROLL AND ROLLS ROLL ARE OUR FAVORITES. THE MANAGER IS GREAT THE PEOPLE ARE GREAT AND THEY ARE NOT PAYING ME TO SAY ALL THIS. I'M A REGULAR CUSTOMER AND DON'T THINK PEOPLE SHOULD TALK BAD ABOUT OUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT NOT ANY OTHER RESTAURANT, ESPECIALLY IT'S THE WAY PEOPLE NEED TO MAKE A LIVING. I WILL DEFEND THEM. EVERYONE MUST GO. YOU WILL MISS OUT!
Never Again! – Me & my girlfriend are just coming back from that place and we are very dissapointed in this restaurant. We went home from Ikea and thought we go to a Restaurant on Westheimer. We both had appetite for Sushi and passed that place. It didnt look very welcoming from the outside. very dark place and no cars in front of it. We should have followed our instincts and leave but we thought we give it a shot.
The lady who served us bearly couldn't understand me nor my girlfriend when we asked her simple questions about the food. My girlfriend told her it's okay and ordered something she didn't even wanted to at the first place.
However, we were hungry and didnt wanna wait any longer.
We ordered some sushi plates, coming with a salad and soup (people who been there know what I'm talking about). The salad as well as the soup were as bad as the service we got. We always had to ask the waitress to refill our drinks. Oh ya - the restaurant was empty and 4 other waiters were sitting there watching TV. The sushi was made pretty fast, no complains at the first place. However, once we tried the first piece of each kind we both thought that he could have spend some more time, creating our food. It was just bad. The spicy tuna as well as california roll tasted like the food was laying there all day long. After we tried the first couple of pieces each we decided to give it back and pay.
Then they tried to charge us the full amount for both plates. We told them that we bearly touched their food - obviously, since the full plates were still sitting in front of us and nobody thought about taking them.
After she talked to the manager we got 50% off the full amount, which was still a joke, but why wasting your time.
I wouldn't recommend that place to anybody and after reading the other 1-star reviews and mine I know why!
feel offended by the waiter/boss – As a Chinese customer, I was pleased to find the owner is a Chinese. However, he wasn't particularly helpful when we ordered. He tried to make a decision for us. He said one dish is "no good. it's crushed...". And the dish happened to be my favorite. He never uses the word "i recommend", but "do this, not do that". I don't know a waiter is supposed to do this to customers. I feel offended not because he makes recommendations, but he tries to fool us or treat us like a fool.
The food is about the average we had before. Of course we will never come back again.
Worse management ever – I never been to any place like it, the service is the worse. And the manager always give customers bad food....
If you like a little extra protein – I have been to Matasusaka a number of times for lunch. Normally we really enjoy it.
Well, today we had some extra "little" surprises. We had to be seated in the Hibachi room since we had too many for the regular dining.
While waiting for our food, my co-worker knocked a crawling german r off of anothers shirt. We all got a bit grossed out, but decided to stick it out (after all, all restaurants have creepy crawlies). THEN after we were done eating ANOTHER german r was seen crawling on one of our plates, munching away at the shrimp that had been left over.
FINALLY, the same guy that found the "r" on his plate found a gnat in his iced tea.
Needless to say, we will never return to Matsusaka. While it is true that you can't keep "rs" completely out of restaurants in Houston, never have I seen such brave ones. Undeterred by light or people. SCARY! I wonder what the place looks like at night. EWWW...
We spoke with the manager and his comment was "well, what do you want me to do?". To his credit, none of us had to pay for our meals, but it stuck with us so we will not return.
A True Disappointment in Customer Service – In spite of the fact that Matsusaka's sushi is overpriced and only average in quality -- not outstanding like that of Ginza -- my daughter and I have been loyal customers ever since we moved to the West side of Houston nearly two years ago because they were conveniently located. Until last week, we ate there at least once a week and the bill was typically between $60 and over $100 each time (depending upon how many people were in our party). Furthermore, I have always made certain to tip above and beyond what etiquette requires.
Last week, when we arrived at 5:58p -- neon "Open" sign blazing in the window and plenty of available seating at the bar where other regulars were sitting and eating -- we were turned away by the owner because they were closing at 6:00p for a "private party." However, there were no sign announcing an early closure due to a private party, and the sign in the window clearly said "OPEN."
This is an awful way to conduct business, especially considering the fact that in all the time I've been a customer of Matsusaka's I have never seen it packed or even remotely crowded. Ms. Karen -- owner of Ginza on San Felipe where we used to go for sushi when we lived in the Galleria area -- would have NEVER turned us away like that. She would have found some way to accomodate us, even if it meant packing a sushi order up in a to-go box.
As a result, Matsusaka has lost a regular customer and anywhere from $240 to over $400 per month in business. I'll happily find another "conveniently located" sushi restaurant to spend my money in.
Best Sushi in Houston – I have been to many different sushi restaruants in Houston, and this is the only one I keep going back to time and again. My wife and I are sushi lovers for sure and have never had a bad meal at Matsusaka. The qaulity of food is extraordinary, I do not think they are over priced, I have found other restaurants in Houston that serve much worse Sushi for more then Matsusaka. I highly recommend this restaruant to anyone that truely enjoys sushi, you will not regret it.
Sushi isn't cheap, do not expect to have good sushi for less then $30 a person. If you want cheap food I hear Mcdonalds Filet-O-Fish is around a buck.
AWESOME! – This place is awesome! I have been here more than 20 times and have never had a problem with service or a credit card charge. The sushi is always fresh and the hibachi tables are not to be missed. The lamb chops are incredible. Everyone I have brought here raves about it. WE LOVE THIS PLACE!!
One of Houston's Best Japanese Restaurant – The place has nice decoration, service was excellent, food - excellent quality, menu extensive selection (something for everyone). It is a bit pricey but very much worth it. I also tried their recommended Ocean Trout special sashimi, and it did melt in my mouth just like the salmon sashimi (my normal selection). No complaints. Been there several times this year with my family for special occasions and did not have the credit card problem. I would highly recommend this place.
