One of the Best Gelato Shops in Portland! – I really like this place because of their unique flavours and that it is a single shop instead of a chain. I particularly enjoy the lavender gelato...mmmm! Sometimes the service can be a bit...odd, but usually it is a reflection of the individual working and not the business as a whole. As a long-term European traveller for the past 10 years, I think this place has got it pretty close to right--or at least good enough to fool my tastebuds!
Bad reviews caused by the customers? – To the reviewer who was upset because they 'couldn't talk about the weather and their day or whatever struck their fancy' anymore, and who the staff no longer cheerfully gave numerous samples to (!) hey, get real! Samples are for people who are new to the store, not meant to be your major food source! Standing there for hours 'deciding' and 'chatting' is unfair to both the staff and the other people in the store. YOU'RE the reason the staff gets cranky after a while! You're a PAIN! The staff is there to serve up ice cream, not be your own private therapist and captive audience.
I've had Better – I used to go to this place all the time a little over a year ago when I lived in the northwest. When I went the Gelato was great always fresh and flavorful, the service was not so great, a bunch of kids talking on their cell phones and rushing you out the door at closing. Well I went back recently and sadly the only thing that changed was the gelato. It seemed bland, the texture was bad, all the gelatos looked messy, and nothing tasted fresh. I am really surprised! This place used to be really good. WHAT HAPPENED?? either way I don't think I will be making the 20 minute drive for it again especailly since they apparently shut off the espresso machine an hour before they close. all around a disappointing experience.
Yummy! – We were strolling down 23rd Avenue for the first time this weekend, and when I saw a gelato shop I was thrilled. It had been years (since I lived in Europe) since I last had some really good gelato. We went in, got some samples from the very friendly staff, and I ended up having a chocolate and tiramisu 2-scoop cone that was just wonderful. We'll definitely be back!
Gross! – This has to be the worst gelato in the city! The texture is NOT authentic. It's too sticky and the colors and tastes are all off. Plus, in italy the appearance of the Gelato in its case is very important, as well as how the gelato looks in the bowl. When I went in, the gelato was smeared around and messy. The scoops that were given to customers looked like a child had done it, it was plopped in a bowl with no regard to appearance at all. And the taste is just unappealing and inauthentic. Walk half a block to Mio.
YUMMY! – I experienced this place last night for the first time. A nice fall evening and after dinner we walked a few blocks for some gelato. I had the Pumpkin and Cheesecake. WONDERFUL! The young man behind the counter was extremely helpful and gave us samples of whatever we wanted. Recommended certain ones because they were super fresh and made recently. It was a great experience and I'm definitely going back!
Simply the Best – Only one thing to say about the gelato, "simply the Best". On a recent trip to Portland, I found a little gelato shop on 23rd and lovejoy that has the most creamy and explosive flavors of any gelato shop. I was brought back to Italy with their delicious selection of local flavors and its intimate feel, also the staff treated me like I was an old friend returning home. A new standard stop for trips to Portland.
Great service – I don't understand the mixed reviews I'm reading regarding customer service. when I went, the two girls manning the counter couldn't have been more wonderful! There was a line out the door for what I'm guessing was most of the evening, yet they never lost their cool. They were friendly and never stopped looking like they were having fun. It's the little things, like stepping around the counter and kneeling down to hand my son his ice cream one, rather than simply handing it over the counter to me, that make great customer service.
Yeah, what happened? – I totally agree with the 2 recent reviews below. I went back here for my first time in six months and something did change! The gelato was not how I remembered and the staff totally seemed unfriendly! The woman who served me was totally rude..
Maybe they changed to an owner who cares more about expediency than service with a smile. Maybe he/she isn't using natural ingredients anymore. Watch out!
Best gelato – I went to Alotto Gelato last night and had the best gelatto and the service was very friendly. I also tried the sorbet and it is very good too. The gelato and the sorbet burst with flavor.
